Petr Yan not interested in Umar Nurmgomedov next, wants UFC 320 backup spot
Yan (19-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) made it three-straight wins after defeating Marcus McGhee in Saturday's UFC on ABC 9 co-main event at Etihad Arena.
Yan was asked about the possibility of facing Nurmagomedov (18-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) next, but after their initial planned booking in June fell through, he's no longer interested.
"Right now, I'm not interested in fighting Umar in November in Qatar," Yan told MMA Junkie and other reporters through an interpreter at the post-fight news conference. "I was offered a fight against him in Baku, Azerbaijan. I accepted it; they couldn't accept it. Then I asked for July, they also couldn't make it. Right now, I'm only focused on a title shot."
Merab Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) defends his bantamweight title against Cory Sandhagen (18-5 MMA, 11-4 UFC) in the UFC 320 co-headliner on Oct. 4 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Yan's most recent loss came to Dvalishvili in March 2023, and he hopes to get the opportunity to avenge that setback.
"Obviously, I prefer to rematch Merab to see how I'll do against him when I'm healthy," Yan said. "But, Cory's also a great fighter, interesting fighter. I had a great fight with him. I believe they're going to have a good fight, but I just believe Merab's pressure is going to be a key factor. At some point, Cory's going to fade."

While in the rematch, Strickland was held to 128 landed strikes on 263 attempts. Meanwhile, Du Plessis increased his landed strikes and landing percentage from the first fight to the second. In the first battle, Du Plessis landed 137 of 354 attempts for a landing rate of 38 percent. At UFC 312, the champ landed 147 of 314 attempts for a striking rate of 46 percent. The 30-year-old made his UFC debut in July 2020 with a second-round submission win over John Phillips. He followed that victory with a first-round TKO over Rhys McKee 10 days later, breaking the UFC record for the quickest turnaround between UFC wins in the modern era. Then, in September, Chimaev knocked out Gerald Meerschaert. Things slowed down for Chimaev after that. He was booked to face Leon Edwards in December 2020, but that matchup never came to be despite multiple attempts to make the fight happen. The reason behind the numerous cancellations of Edwards vs. Chimaev was COVID-19. When Chimaev finally returned to the Octagon in October 2021, he made short work of Li Jingliang, scoring a submission at 3:16 of Round 1. In his next bout, Chimaev went the distance for the first time in his career, picking up a victory over Gilbert Burns. He followed that with a submission over Kevin Holland. A break of more than a year followed that victory. Chimaev's next outing was an October 2023 matchup against Kamaru Usman, a fight that Chimaev won via decision. A year after that, Chimaev made short work of Robert Whittaker, defeating the ex-UFC middleweight champ via submission (face crank) in the first round of their UFC 308 scrap. With another action-packed month of MMA in the books, MMA Junkie looks at the best knockouts from July 2025: Here are the five nominees, listed in chronological order, and winner of MMA Junkie's Knockout of the Month award for July. Anas Azizoun at 2025 PFL Europe 2 Gustavo Oliveira put his name on the map with PFL courtesy of a knockout for the ages. Oliveira (11-2) created a highlight moment that will forever be replayed throughout his career. Oliveira smashed Anas Azizoun with a spinning back elbow out of nowhere at 3:25 of Round 1 of the bantamweight bout. Azizoun (5-2) went out immediately and crashed to the canvas. The winner: Muslim Salikhov def. Carlos Leal at UFC on ABC 9 "41 years young!" Muslim Salikhov came up big as an underdog against Carlos Leal in their welterweight showdown. Salikhov (22-5 MMA, 9-4 UFC) landed a brutal overhand right to take out Leal (22-7 MMA, 1-2 UFC) at the 0:42 mark of Round 1. Salikhov, who was a 5-1 underdog, has now won three fights in a row.
