'Cricket is poorer without Kohli and Rohit': England legend Joe Root drops first reaction on Ro-Ko's retirement
Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma recently retired from Test cricket ahead of India vs England series. Joe Root has now paid an emotional tribute to Kohli and Rohit, calling them 'Indian legends.' read more
Indian cricket entered a new era recently as two of its biggest legends, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, announced their retirement from the Test format. The announcement came just days before the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled the squad for the upcoming five-match Test series against England.
Both players played key roles in red-ball cricket for India, especially Kohli. The former captain not only led India to their first-ever Test series win in Australia, but also helped qualify for the inaugural World Test Championship final. Rohit, on the other hand, captained India in their second consecutive WTC final against Australia.

However, both shocked the world with their sudden retirements before the start of the new WTC cycle for India. Reacting to the news, England batting legend Joe Root paid a heartfelt tribute to the two icons before the first Test match against India in Leeds. In an interview with Sony Sports Network, Root spoke from his heart.
'I've never been in competition with Virat. He is someone I've always admired and thought, 'Wow, what a player'. I'll miss those battles we had on the field, but it provides opportunities for other players to try and put their mark on Test cricket,' Root said about Kohli, as the duo were part of the famous 'Fab 4', including Steve Smith and Kane Williamson.

Root also spoke about how the absence of Kohli and Rohit will be felt across the cricketing world and not just in India. With Kohli and Rohit stepping aside from the longest format, all eyes will now be on how the new-look Indian team will perform under the captaincy of Shubman Gill.
'Cricket is poorer without them being around. They are two Indian legends. They've done amazing things for Indian cricket for such a long period of time. It'll be a slightly different look to the series, but we still expect it to be highly competitive,' he added.
The last time India toured England, they managed to draw the series 2-2. India have not won a Test series in England since 2007.

Shubman Gill to bat at No. 4 in Headingley Test, Rishabh Pant at 5; but where does that leave Karun Nair?
India's newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill will bat at no. 4 in the opening match of the five-Test series against England, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant confirmed on Wednesday. With Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma stepping away from the longest format ahead of this tour, two massive vacancies opened up in India's batting order, and Gill is set to occupy the position long held by Kohli. 'I think there is still discussion going on for no.3. But no. 4 and 5 are fixed. Shubman is going to bat at no.4, and I'm going to stay at no.5 as of now. Rest, we will keep discussing,' Pant told the media during a press conference. The first Test begins June 20 at Headingley. Gill, who has led the Indian team in T20Is during their tour of Zimbabwe last year, has long been viewed as a leader-in-waiting, and will now assume full charge in Test whites. His shift to No. 4 has largely aligned with expectations and India will hope that it retains the stability to a batting order in transition. The No. 4 spot, once considered immovable during Kohli's era, now finds its successor in a batter known for his calmness, flair and adaptability. Pant, who is also the vice-captain, has batted at no.5 throughout India's 2024/25 Test season. Ahead of the first Test, many opined that Karun Nair could be India's new no.5, with Pant shifting to sixth spot; however, the wicketkeeper-batter has quashed those speculations. What remains unresolved, however, is the puzzle around the No. 3 spot. Karun Nair, who forced his way back into national reckoning with a glut of runs in domestic cricket and then topped it off with a stunning double hundred in the tour match against England Lions, is a frontrunner. His return to the Indian setup has been among the most talked-about comebacks in recent times, and he seems primed to slot in at one of the top three positions. However, India's decision could hinge on whether they hand a debut to left-hander Sai Sudharsan, who earned his maiden Test call-up on the back of consistent performances across formats. If Sudharsan is picked in the XI, it may force India to rethink their middle-order configuration. Given Karun Nair's traditional role as a top or middle-order anchor, it is unlikely the team management would push him down to no. 6, which would be an unfamiliar territory. That dilemma makes the no. 3 selection all the more crucial, especially with England's bowlers expected to exploit the early movement at Headingley.

India's Tour Of England 2025: A Brief History Of IND In ENG
Ahead of India's 2025 tour of England, here is a look at the history of the Indian cricket team's performances on English soil. Team India are slated to take on England in a five-match Test series slated to begin on the 20th of the month as new skipper Shubman Gill gears up for his captaincy debut on the former coloniser's territory. Ahead of India's 2025 tour of England, here is a look at the history of the Indian cricket team's performances on English soil. India and England share a long history, with the Men In Blues' first tour of England coming all the way back in the year 1932, which went the way of England as the hosts clinched the only game of the tour. India returned in the year 1936 to claim their first draw on English soil, but fell to a 2-0 defeat in the three-match series between the two nations. It was a decade before Indian faced the Englishmen on enemy territory again, but this time in 1946, the Indian side managed two draws in a three-game series that ended in favour of England, who had registered a win. In 1952, the Englishmen posted yet another series win in a four-match series as the hosts managed three wins and a draw. Things got worse for the tourists in 1959 as the English unit blanked Indian in a 5-0 drubbing, before emulating the feat in a three-game series in 1967. 1971 was a historic year for Indian cricket as the visitors picked up their first Test win on English solid and eventually the series as Team India finished the three-match-series with a win, two draws and absolutely no defeats. The English restored their supremacy in 1974 with a 3-0 series win, before edging out their rivals in a four-match series in 1979. England picked up a slender win in the following 1990 three-match series with two games ending in a draw and the hosts triumphing in the other, before replicating the same six years later when India came visiting. The 2002 season of India's tour to England finished in a stalemate as both sides won a game each while sharing the spoils on two occasions in a four-match series. But, India took the 2007 series all to themselves as they picked up a win and pulled off a couple of draws to close out the three-game tour as winners. England enjoyed a whitewash of Indian in the 2011 series, winning all four Tests in the tour. The Three Lions also clinched the five-match 2014 series 3-1 and did one better with a 4-1 series win in 2018. The most recent Indian Test tour of England, in the year 2021, remains fresh in the memory of fans as India fought to split the series 2-2, with the other game finishing in a draw. Shubman Gill (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Rishabh Pant, Dhruv Jurel, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav. FIFA lifts transfer ban on ISL club Mohun Bagan Super Giants
Football's global governing body FIFA has lifted the transfer ban on Mohun Bagan Super Giant on Tuesday clearing the way for the club to sign new players for the upcoming season. The ban was imposed on May 5 over non-payment of dues to the Australian striker Jason Cummings' former club Central Coast Mariners of Australia. It took just more than a month to revoke the ban as the club acted proactively. Mohun Bagan had submitted a 107-page document to FIFA and responded to two subsequent queries from the governing body. 'Mohun Bagan submitted a 107-page document to FIFA and thereafter there were two queries, and finally the disciplinary committee has sent a mail lifting the ban,' a Mohun Bagan Super Giant official told PTI. Unlike Mumbai City FC, whose similar ban took nearly three months to be lifted, Mohun Bagan managed to resolve the issue within a month. The news comes days after a new president Debasish Dutta and general secretary Srinjoy Bose took charge of the club. However, the ban did not significantly impact the club as the summer transfer window opened last week on June 9, giving them plenty of time to build on the team for the coming ISL season. Mohun Bagan will also be able to feature in the continental tournament this year after they had to pull out last time due to a ban by the AFC. The continental body had sanctioned a fine and banned the Kolkata-based club from the AFC Champions League 2 after the team decided to withdraw from a league match in Iran citing concerns related to the political tensions in the Middle East between Isarel and Iran. The Indian club withdrew from the match against Tractor SC and didn't travel to the city of Tabriz inviting ban from AFC under the competition regulations.
