PUTRAJAYA: Efforts to formally set up the Malaysian Media Council (MMC) are under way, with an official announcement expected soon.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who disclosed this, said it could be announced before the National Journalists Day (Hawana) 2025 celebration on June 14.
He said the process will commence once the MMC Bill passed by the Dewan Rakyat on Feb 26 and Dewan Negara on March 19 receives the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's consent and is officially gazetted.
'We expect to begin the process of officially creating the MMC within the next few weeks, once the Bill receives royal consent and is gazetted.
'It will take some time due to the administrative and financial aspects, which involve waiting for allocations from the Finance Ministry.
'We hope to have good news about the MMC by Hawana,' he told reporters after the ministry's monthly assembly here yesterday, Bernama reported.
Fahmi previously said the proposed MMC is expected to get off the ground by mid-2025.
The council will serve as a self-regulatory body to safeguard media freedom and uphold journalistic ethics, while also empowering the national media industry.
In his speech earlier, Fahmi said Hawana 2025 is not just a celebration but a platform to strengthen the media ecosystem and recognise the vital role played by journalists.
'It also aims to reinforce professionalism and responsible freedom of expression among media practitioners.
'As a curtain-raiser, a pre-launch for Hawana will take place on June 3 at Wisma Bernama,' he said.
The highlight will be on June 14 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL), with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as the special guest.
The event is expected to see the gathering of about 1,000 local and foreign journalists.
Organised by the Communications Ministry with Bernama as the implementing agency, Hawana 2025 will feature a variety of activities, including a Pesta Pantun on May 31, a pre-launch event with strategic partners at Wisma Bernama on June 3 and media forum jointly hosted with the Malaysian Press Institute.

The fire at the British prime minister's home occurred on May 12. As a result, the front door of the building was damaged. The prime minister's home, where he lived for almost 20 years before moving to Downing Street, is located on Countess Road in north London. UK media reported that Starmer is currently renting out his home. 'A 48-year-old man was arrested on Monday, 2 June at London Stansted Airport ... on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson with intent to endanger life,' the Metropolitan Police said in a statement on Monday. The arrest is reportedly related to three incidents: a car fire on May 8, a fire at the entrance to a building on May 11, and a fire in a residential building on May 12. All incidents are connected to a well-known public figure, the statement noted. Three people have already been arrested in connection with the arson attacks, namely 21-year-old Ukrainian national Roman Lavrynovych, 26-year-old Romanian national Stanislav Carpiuc, and 34-year-old Ukrainian national Petro Pochynok. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Social media platforms urged to join Content Forum to ensure accountability of content, says Fahmi

PETALING JAYA: All social media platforms should be part of Content Forum to ensure accountability of their impacts on the society, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. The Communications Minister said that social media providers should be responsible for the content shared on their platforms after raking in billions of ringgit in advertisements earnings. 'We must make sure these platforms join Content Forum, so that they need to be aware of the impact they have on Malaysian society. 'They cannot profit from our loss,' he said when launching the Suicide Content Guidelines at Menara Star here on Tuesday (June 3). He added that such guidelines were important alongside participation in initiatives by Content Forum. Fahmi also said that he was hopeful that the establishment of the Malaysian Media Council would further provide media organisations with a platform to comprehensively discuss and address various issues, including online harms. In a press conference later, he also told reporters that the platforms should not 'wash their hands off' of content that could fuel online harms including suicides and cyber bullying. 'It's actually in their interest that they participate so that they can help to develop certain best practises, codes of conduct,' he added. Fahmi said the problem of social media platforms not collaborating with the authorities were also experienced by other countries in the Asia-Pacific region and Asean despite various laws pun in place. 'Many of these social media platforms feel that they are bigger than the laws of the countries in the Asia-Pacifc region. 'So it's not just a matter of laws but the attitude of these platforms,' he added. The guideline is an industry-led, national framework that sets standards for how suicide-related topics are covered and shared in both traditional and digital platforms. Also present at the launch were Content Forum chairman Rafiq Razali, Star Media Group chairman Tan Sri Wong Foon Meng, and Star Media Group chief executive officer Chan Seng Fatt, among others.

Fahmi says Meta, X not doing enough to curb online harm

Published on: Tuesday, June 03, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jun 03, 2025 By: Minderjeet Kaur, FMT Text Size: Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil and CMCF chairman Rafiq Razali launching guidelines for the reporting and sharing of suicide-related content at Cybertorium Star Tower, Petaling Jaya. PETALING JAYA: Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil took social media giants Meta and X to task today for not doing enough to tackle cyberbullying, scams, and harmful content online. He said only TikTok had shown real commitment by voluntarily joining the Communications and Multimedia Content Forum of Malaysia (CMCF). 'We cannot have these social media platforms washing their hands of content that could also create online harm, particularly related to suicide,' he said when launching CMCF's guidelines for the reporting and sharing of suicide-related content here today. Fahmi said he had asked CMCF to engage with Meta, X, and other major players, but that none came forward to participate. He said TikTok, on the other hand, took the initiative 'very early on, even before we came up with the licensing regime for social media and online messaging systems'. 'I wholeheartedly applaud TikTok's approach to voluntarily becoming a member of Content Forum,' he said, contrasting this with the 'far from satisfactory' response from Meta and X. 'Facebook, for example, said that they are going to be licensed. But they must understand that Content Forum is not government-led. It's industry-led. It's actually in their interest to participate so they can help develop best practices and codes of conduct.' Malaysians lost RM53.88 billion to online scams in 2024 – around 3% of the gross domestic product. From 2021 to April 2024, online scams claimed over US$708 million (RM3.18 billion) with more than 95,800 victims, according to the State of Scam Report 2024. Suicide rates have also risen sharply. In 2022, Malaysia recorded 1,068 suicide deaths – up 66.6% from 641 cases in 2020. Selangor had the highest number of cases (305), followed by Kuala Lumpur (135), Johor and Penang (123 each). Fahmi also called on vernacular media to support suicide prevention efforts, saying that mental health resources should be made available in all major languages. 'We need to reach out to the vernacular press. A lot of the content is in English, but our efforts must be understood in all languages,' he said. He urged journalists to adhere to CMCF's guidelines when reporting on suicides, particularly by protecting victims' identities and families' privacy to avoid 'copycat' incidents. 'Reporting about suicide is most sensitive and most harrowing for any journalist (covering the tragedy). We should not divulge the location or the personality in such tragedies,' he said. He said the CMCF guidelines also covered the broader digital ecosystem, providing practical advice on how to safely share lived experiences, avoid trauma-triggering content, and guide people towards available support services. 'This comprehensive approach reflects an understanding that every individual plays a role in creating a safer and more empathetic content environment,' he said. He said Malaysia's leadership in this initiative had also gained international recognition, with the guidelines selected for presentation at the International Association for Suicide Prevention. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
