KUALA LUMPUR, May 31 (Bernama) -- TV3's Islamic Programming Department and Astro Radio News have advanced to the finals of the inaugural HAWANA-DBP Pantun Festival, a traditional Malay poetry competition held in celebration of National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2025. The winner is expected to be announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on June 14, during the official highlight of HAWANA 2025. The champion will take home RM3,000 in cash, while the runner-up will receive RM2,000. Both teams will also be awarded trophies and certificates.

KUALA LUMPUR: In conjunction with National Journalists Day (Hawana) 2025, Cabinet members expressed their appreciation to media practitioners for their dedi­cation and sacrifice in delivering the news. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said that in an increasingly challenging media environment, journalists who uphold transparency, responsibi­lity and integrity play a crucial role. He said democracy could not function maturely without the work of journalists, whom he described as 'pens that shape public understanding of key issues and government policies'. 'My sincere appreciation to all media practitioners for your commitment and sacrifices in fulfilling your duties to the people and country,' he said in a post on X on the event, which was marked yesterday, Bernama reported. Hawana is celebrated on May 29 each year, with the highlight of this year's celebration scheduled for June 14 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be the special guest. Now in its fifth edition since its inception in 2018, Hawana is held annually to honour the contributions of media professionals to the nation's development. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil expressed his highest appreciation to media practitioners for their invaluable service and dedication. He urged them to continue with their commitment and ethical practices in disseminating verified information. 'This is in pursuit of building an informed and integrity-driven nation,' he said on Facebook. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, in a post on the ministry's official Facebook page, expressed gratitude to all journalists for their service, sacrifice and integrity shown in pursuit of the truth. 'We celebrate journalists as the pulse of the nation's information ... (on) a day that honours dedicated individuals who deliver news and information to the public quickly, accurately and ethically. 'Journalists do not merely report but also shape thinking, uphold truth, influence public opinion and strengthen democracy.' National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang expressed gratitude to media practitioners for their continued commitment in disseminating information and news to the people.

KUALA LUMPUR, May 29 (Bernama) -- Several state leaders have marked National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2025 with tributes to the country's media professionals, praising their integrity and resilience in the face of growing challenges. In Negeri Sembilan, senior state executive councillor Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias described journalists as a bulwark against misinformation, lauding their efforts to deliver accurate reporting in an era dominated by fake news. 'The role of journalists is far from easy. They face safety risks, tight deadlines and the burden of public trust. They are essential in ensuring facts prevail over falsehoods,' he said Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh thanked journalists for acting as a bridge between policymakers and the public. 'Your work reflects the aspirations of leadership. Keep writing and may those in Melaka continue to do so with integrity,' he said. In Perak, Communications, Multimedia and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman Mohd Azlan Helmi highlighted the growing regional significance of HAWANA. This year's celebration coincides with the ASEAN Summit and includes participation from Southeast Asian media. 'These opportunities to collaborate and exchange ideas are rare. Malaysian media should seize them to expand their networks and elevate their work,' he said. Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli posted his tribute on Facebook, commending journalists for nurturing an informed and socially aware public. 'Continue your work with ethics, professionalism and courage in pursuit of the truth,' he wrote.

KUCHING: The Sarawak government has expressed its willingness to send media practitioners who are also natives of the state to participate in an executive course related to journalism in Cambridge, United Kingdom. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that the approach was taken to enhance the quality of news reporting, thereby elevating the prestige of the country's journalism industry. 'If we can provide free tertiary education, of course, I have an allocation to send journalists for this executive programme. 'The selection of journalists to attend this executive course involves the collaboration of journalist associations in Sarawak to see the qualifications of candidates... I hope this effort will improve the quality of reporting, and specifically for media practitioners from Sarawak who have new ideas for the future of journalism,' he said. He told reporters after the Carbon Asia 2025 Conference, here, today. Earlier, Abang Johari was reported to have said that Sarawak plans to send two journalists to Cambridge, United Kingdom to participate in an executive course related to journalism to improve the standard of local news reporting to be on par with international standards. In conjunction with National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2025, he also expressed his appreciation to the country's media practitioners. The HAWANA 2025 Main Event, scheduled to take place on June 14 at Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre (KLWTC), will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and is expected to be attended by approximately 1,000 media practitioners from around the world. HAWANA, organised by the Ministry of Communications with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as the implementing agency, will feature various events including the Pantun Festival on May 31 and a pre-launch event with strategic partners at Wisma Bernama on June 3, as well as a media forum jointly organised with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) on June 14.
