MPI proposes establishment of Utusan Melayu journalism academic chair
MPI chief executive officer, Ainol Amriz Ismail, said the academic chair is not only intended to document Utusan Melayu's legacy but also aims to incorporate its research findings into journalism curricula at institutions of higher learning.
"Utusan Melayu is part of the nation's history, not just journalism history, as it documented key moments and milestones in the country's journey.
"That's why academics and students need to preserve this documentation at the university level," he told reporters after the Kenangan Utusan Melayu Forum at Subang Parade today.
The forum, held in conjunction with the 86th anniversary of Utusan Melayu and National Journalists Day (HAWANA), was officiated by veteran journalist Tan Sri Johan Jaafar.
Ainol Amriz said MPI encourages journalists to actively write about their experiences, as well as the struggles, economic history, and language issues once championed by Utusan Melayu, through the e-journal platform it recently launched.
Meanwhile, Johan pointed out that Utusan Melayu has earned its place in history, surviving from the 1930s well into the 21st century.
"Utusan Melayu has nearly 80 years of history. It represents not just the history of journalism but also the history of the nation, its people, and the many figures who shaped the media landscape.
"That was the strength of Utusan Melayu. It succeeded in its role as a chronicler of history, capturing key issues and events that shaped Malaysia's nation-building journey from the pre-war period to post-independence," he added.

PENAMPANG: The Ministry of Communications has called on all media clubs across the country to collect detailed data on the salaries of media practitioners in their respective states. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the information is crucial before the matter can be brought forward for discussion in the near future. 'I have instructed the coalition of media clubs in each state to gather data so the ministry can have a clear picture of the actual situation, especially regarding salaries. 'We're aware that this salary issue is not limited to Sabah. That's why we need to understand the situation across the board,' he said. He said that media professionals include both full-time journalists and part-time contributors or stringers, and any review must take these categories into account. Fahmi was responding to questions on the low wages faced by several long-serving media practitioners in Sabah, many of whom reportedly still earn less than RM2,000 per month. He was speaking after presenting aid under the Kasih@Hawana Fund to Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, a photographer with the Sabah Information Department, who was seriously injured in a road accident in March. Vicky, who has served the department for 18 years since 2007, suffered fractures to six left ribs and his left arm, and now requires ongoing physiotherapy. Earlier, Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin also presented contributions to Hafizul Andie Zulkarnain, 35, a journalist with Sabah News, who recently underwent surgery following complications from a twisted intestine and a ruptured appendix. When asked if additional funding would be allocated for the Kasih@Hawana Fund this year, Fahmi said the ministry would first utilise the remaining funds from two previous Hawana programmes, amounting to RM1 million, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last year. 'We've requested Bernama to explore mechanisms to raise more funds for media practitioners, but for now, we need to exhaust the current allocation,' he said. The Kasih@Hawana Fund, an initiative by the Ministry of Communications and managed by Bernama, was launched in conjunction with National Journalists Day 2023. It reflects the government's empathy and appreciation for the media's role in society. Govt to address low media salaries, says Fahmi
KOTA KINABALU (July 24): The government will look into the issue of low salaries among media practitioners in the country, said Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. Fahmi said he plans to engage with media clubs across Malaysia to gain deeper insight into the situation before initiating discussions in the near future. 'We want to understand the conditions in every state,' he said. 'We will also look into aspects concerning both full-time workers and stringers. Let me collect the information first.' He was responding to a reporter's question after presenting a contribution from the Tabung Kasih @ Hawana fund to a local media practitioner in Penampang today. On a related note, Fahmi said there are plans to increase the fund's allocation to ensure continued support for media practitioners facing hardship. 'However, since the previous allocation is not yet fully utilised, we will prioritise disbursing those funds first,' he added. 'I have asked Bernama to explore a mechanism to raise more funds to assist more media colleagues in the future.' During the visit, the minister met with fund recipient Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, 52, a photographer at the Sabah Information Department (JaPen), who was severely injured in a road accident in March last year. Vicky, who sustained six broken ribs and a fractured left arm after being hit by a four-wheel-drive vehicle, expressed his gratitude for the aid. He recently returned to work but still requires physiotherapy. So far, a total of 463 media practitioners nationwide have benefited from the Tabung Kasih @ Hawana fund. Also present during the visit was Bernama Chief Executive Officer Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin.

Fadillah urges Sarawak media to focus on key development stories
KUCHING: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has encouraged media practitioners in Sarawak to consistently spotlight critical development narratives as the state progresses towards its Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030 objectives. Speaking at a dinner event linked to the Sarawak Media Conference (SMeC) 2025 and state-level National Journalists Day (HAWANA) celebration, he emphasised the need for news coverage to align with Sarawak's strategic direction. 'News that can be highlighted includes advancements in green and hydrogen technology, as well as stories of struggle and resilience amid the rising cost of living. Other crucial narratives include the impact of policies and public services, right here in the heart of Borneo, that truly matter,' he said. Fadillah stressed that media platforms must uphold truth, dignity, and hope in their reporting. During the event, the Deputy Prime Minister presented the Sarawak Premier's Special Appreciation Award 2025 to 10 media professionals. The awards recognised contributions across categories such as editor, journalist, newsreader, radio announcer, and photographer. Recipients included Sarawak Bernama bureau chief Hamdan Ismail, Sarawak Tribune editor-in-chief Aden Nagrace, and Cheng Lian Hock from Dayak Daily.
