PENAMPANG: The Ministry of Communications has called on all media clubs across the country to collect detailed data on the salaries of media practitioners in their respective states. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the information is crucial before the matter can be brought forward for discussion in the near future. 'I have instructed the coalition of media clubs in each state to gather data so the ministry can have a clear picture of the actual situation, especially regarding salaries. 'We're aware that this salary issue is not limited to Sabah. That's why we need to understand the situation across the board,' he said. He said that media professionals include both full-time journalists and part-time contributors or stringers, and any review must take these categories into account. Fahmi was responding to questions on the low wages faced by several long-serving media practitioners in Sabah, many of whom reportedly still earn less than RM2,000 per month. He was speaking after presenting aid under the Kasih@Hawana Fund to Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, a photographer with the Sabah Information Department, who was seriously injured in a road accident in March. Vicky, who has served the department for 18 years since 2007, suffered fractures to six left ribs and his left arm, and now requires ongoing physiotherapy. Earlier, Bernama Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin also presented contributions to Hafizul Andie Zulkarnain, 35, a journalist with Sabah News, who recently underwent surgery following complications from a twisted intestine and a ruptured appendix. When asked if additional funding would be allocated for the Kasih@Hawana Fund this year, Fahmi said the ministry would first utilise the remaining funds from two previous Hawana programmes, amounting to RM1 million, announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last year. 'We've requested Bernama to explore mechanisms to raise more funds for media practitioners, but for now, we need to exhaust the current allocation,' he said. The Kasih@Hawana Fund, an initiative by the Ministry of Communications and managed by Bernama, was launched in conjunction with National Journalists Day 2023. It reflects the government's empathy and appreciation for the media's role in society. To date, 463 media practitioners nationwide have benefitted from the fund. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ukraine's drone attack sparks fires in Rostov region, Russia says

(Reuters) -An overnight Ukrainian drone attack sparked several fires, including at a power substation, in the southern Russian region of Rostov, the acting regional governor said on Tuesday. There were no injuries as a result of the attack and the fire at the substation on an area of about 500 square metres (5,400 square feet) has been extinguished, Rostov's acting governor, Yuri Slyusar, said on the Telegram messaging app. Russia's defence units destroyed a total of 24 Ukrainian drones overnight, including seven over the Rostov region, which has been a frequent target of Ukraine's strikes, Russia's defence ministry said on Telegram. The ministry reports only the number of downed drones, not how many Ukraine launched. Reuters could not independently verify the reports, and there was no immediate comment from Kyiv. Ukraine has frequently said its attacks inside Russia are aimed at destroying infrastructure key to Moscow's war efforts and are in response to Russia's continued strikes on Ukraine. Two children among injured in Russia's overnight attack on Kharkiv region, Ukraine says

(Reuters) -Two children were among several people injured in Russia's largest air attack on the Ukrainian town of Lozova since the war began, the head of the local administration said on Tuesday. "Critical infrastructure, apartment buildings and private homes have been damaged," Serhiy Zelenskiy, the head of the city's council, said on the Telegram messaging app. "Lozova has endured the largest attack since the beginning of the war," he said, adding several people including two children were wounded in the town in the eastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv. The scale of the attack on the town, which had a pre-war population of about 55,000, was not immediately clear. Reuters could not independently verify Zelenskiy's report. There was no immediate comment from Russia. Both sides deny targeting civilians in the war that Russia launched with a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. The Kharkiv region, which lies near the border with Russia, has been the target of regular Russian drone and missile attacks since the start of the war. Parts of Lozova, a town in the southern parts of the Kharkiv region, were left without power and water supply, Zelenskiy said. "We will persevere!" he added. Govt to hold 2026 Budget consultation council this week

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will hold the 2026 Budget Consultation Council this week to gather feedback from stakeholders for the national budget, which is scheduled to be tabled in October. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the engagement session is part of the Madani government's efforts to ensure the national budget reflects the needs and aspirations of both the people and industry players. "The engagement session will be held this Thursday, Aug 7. Essentially, it is part of an ongoing effort to gather feedback from various stakeholders, including their aspirations for the 2026 Budget," he said. "This will take into account the various ongoing initiatives and policies currently being implemented, while also considering the current geopolitical situation and prevailing challenges," he said after attending the Chief Human Resources Officer Nexus Forum. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh was also present. Fahmi added that the government would also devote more time to understand the needs of the people and listen to the views of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which form the backbone of the national economy. He said MSMEs contribute approximately 70 per cent of employment for Malaysians. "As such, it is important for the government to understand the issues they are facing," he said. Fahmi said this Thursday's session would mark the first of many such engagements, which would be intensified in the coming weeks. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had also advised all ministries to conduct engagement sessions with the Finance Ministry to present their views, he said. "Based on the 13th Malaysia Plan, which we hope to pass next week, we will then determine the specific areas that should be prioritised in the 2026 Madani Budget under the first rolling plan," he said, adding that the engagement process is expected to continue until the final draft is completed. The 2026 Supply Bill (Budget) is scheduled to be tabled on Oct 10, according to Parliament's meeting agenda. Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan said the national budget will continue Malaysia's trajectory of reform, inclusivity, and resilience.
