Govt to address low media salaries, says Fahmi
Fahmi said he plans to engage with media clubs across Malaysia to gain deeper insight into the situation before initiating discussions in the near future.
'We want to understand the conditions in every state,' he said. 'We will also look into aspects concerning both full-time workers and stringers. Let me collect the information first.'
He was responding to a reporter's question after presenting a contribution from the Tabung Kasih @ Hawana fund to a local media practitioner in Penampang today.
On a related note, Fahmi said there are plans to increase the fund's allocation to ensure continued support for media practitioners facing hardship.
'However, since the previous allocation is not yet fully utilised, we will prioritise disbursing those funds first,' he added.
'I have asked Bernama to explore a mechanism to raise more funds to assist more media colleagues in the future.'
During the visit, the minister met with fund recipient Vicky Sylvester Matanjang, 52, a photographer at the Sabah Information Department (JaPen), who was severely injured in a road accident in March last year.
Vicky, who sustained six broken ribs and a fractured left arm after being hit by a four-wheel-drive vehicle, expressed his gratitude for the aid. He recently returned to work but still requires physiotherapy.
So far, a total of 463 media practitioners nationwide have benefited from the Tabung Kasih @ Hawana fund.
Also present during the visit was Bernama Chief Executive Officer Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin.

Govt to hold 2026 Budget consultation council this week
KUALA LUMPUR: The government will hold the 2026 Budget Consultation Council this week to gather feedback from stakeholders for the national budget, which is scheduled to be tabled in October. Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the engagement session is part of the Madani government's efforts to ensure the national budget reflects the needs and aspirations of both the people and industry players. "The engagement session will be held this Thursday, Aug 7. Essentially, it is part of an ongoing effort to gather feedback from various stakeholders, including their aspirations for the 2026 Budget," he said. "This will take into account the various ongoing initiatives and policies currently being implemented, while also considering the current geopolitical situation and prevailing challenges," he said after attending the Chief Human Resources Officer Nexus Forum. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh was also present. Fahmi added that the government would also devote more time to understand the needs of the people and listen to the views of micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), which form the backbone of the national economy. He said MSMEs contribute approximately 70 per cent of employment for Malaysians. "As such, it is important for the government to understand the issues they are facing," he said. Fahmi said this Thursday's session would mark the first of many such engagements, which would be intensified in the coming weeks. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim had also advised all ministries to conduct engagement sessions with the Finance Ministry to present their views, he said. "Based on the 13th Malaysia Plan, which we hope to pass next week, we will then determine the specific areas that should be prioritised in the 2026 Madani Budget under the first rolling plan," he said, adding that the engagement process is expected to continue until the final draft is completed. The 2026 Supply Bill (Budget) is scheduled to be tabled on Oct 10, according to Parliament's meeting agenda. Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan said the national budget will continue Malaysia's trajectory of reform, inclusivity, and resilience.

He said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is taking the country's debt situation seriously, with a clear focus on curbing new borrowings and narrowing the fiscal deficit. "When the deficit declines, debt levels also fall. We've heard the Prime Minister previously speak about limiting new borrowings, and he is clearly committed to avoiding excessive debt,' he said. Mustazar was speaking as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara programme yesterday, in an episode titled '13MP: The People's Socioeconomic Agenda and Hopes'. According to the 13MP blueprint, ongoing fiscal consolidation efforts are expected to narrow the fiscal deficit to below three per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) and keep the federal debt level under 60 per cent of GDP. "The government will not spend directly but instead grant concessions to qualified private firms. Hence, not everything announced by the government will involve direct fiscal commitments. ‘Fake and fraudulent': Viral RM26m gratuity letter ‘never issued', says works minister
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 5 — Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has denied the issuance of a letter dated July 28, 2025, which has gone viral on social media, that was supposedly from the ministry regarding a gratuity payment to an individual. Nanta said that the letter was fake and was never sent out by the ministry or by him as the minister. 'The ministry never issued any official invitation for such a gratuity payment ceremony. As such, I advise the public not to be deceived by such documents, which clearly contain elements of fraud and impersonation,' he said. He said the ministry had taken note of the matter and is working together with the authorities to conduct further investigation. Those who have any doubts about the authenticity of documents or communications allegedly from the ministry are advised to contact the ministry's official channels via its website at or the ministry's official hotline. Previously, a letter had gone viral on social media claiming that a gratuity payment of over RM26 million was supposed to be presented to the next of kin of an individual at a ceremony to be held at the ministry here today. — Bernama
