KUCHING (June 24): The Sarawak Media Conference 2025 (SMEC25) will bring together around 600 influential thinkers and communication practitioners from both within Malaysia and abroad, says Datuk Abdullah Saidol.
According to the Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Corporate Affairs, Information and UKAS) the conference will feature diverse perspectives on the evolving landscape of journalism, technology, and digital transformation.
'SMEC25 will serve as an important platform for collaboration between the government, media professionals, and other key stakeholders,' he added during a press conference today.
He also emphasised that the Sarawak government recognises the vital role of the media as a catalyst for development, a trusted source of information, and a bridge between the government and the people.
The government, he added, will continue to support efforts that strengthen professionalism, ethics and innovation in the media industry.
'The conference is scheduled to take place on July 2 and 3, 2025 at Sheraton Hotel in Kuching. It will be organised by the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) in collaboration with Angkatan Zaman Mansang (AZAM) Sarawak,' he said.
He also revealed that the theme for this year's edition is 'Artificial Intelligence (AI): Shaping the Future of Media and Journalism,' reflecting current concerns and opportunities arising from the digital age.
Apart from that, he said SMEC25 will feature prominent speakers such as Shelly Bryant from Singapore and the United States, known for her work in cross-cultural narrative strategy, and Steve Saerang, Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications at Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison and a prominent youth communications leader in Indonesia.
'Also speaking will be Soh Wan Wei, CEO of AI Visionary Society in Singapore, who is known internationally for exploring the intersection of AI, the metaverse, and digital journalism,' he said.
From Malaysia, the lineup includes Datuk Suhaimi Sulaiman, Director-General of Broadcasting Malaysia and a key figure in transforming the national news landscape, and Dr Jun-E Tan from the Khazanah Research Institute, who authored a major policy report on AI governance.
Professor Dr Patrick, CEO of the Sarawak Artificial Intelligence Centre, will also speak about AI development and knowledge transfer efforts within Sarawak.
'A two-day exhibition will run alongside the conference, featuring participation from UKAS, AZAM, SAIC, TEGAS, CENTEXS, UNIMAS and Affin Bank. The exhibition is aimed at showcasing digital innovation, AI research and communication-related initiatives in the state,' he said.
In conjunction with SMEC25 and the Sarawak-level celebration of National Journalists Day (HAWANA), Abdullah also said that a gala dinner will be held on July 2 at Riverside Majestic Hotel.
The dinner will be attended by Deputy Prime Minister Dato' Sri Fadillah Yusof, members of the Sarawak Cabinet, political secretaries, heads of departments, and representatives from the Indonesian and Bruneian consulates. Around 700 guests are expected.
'The evening will feature performances by local artists including Karen Libau, Firdaus Materang, Ng Chien Chien, and Roxy Ixzy.
'There will also be a modern dance and hip hop segment by Kinate Dance Studio and a theatrical performance titled 'Kampung Sik Berasa' by Persatuan Anak Seni Sarawak, continuing the story presented during last year's conference,' he said.
A key highlight of the dinner is the Premier's Special Appreciation Award, which will be presented to 10 media professionals in various categories including editors, journalists, newsreaders, radio presenters, photographers and special recognition figures. Each recipient will receive a plaque, certificate and a cash prize of RM3,000.
Abdullah said the award is intended to honour outstanding achievements, dedication and sacrifices made by members of the media who have made a positive impact in Sarawak.
Separately during the press conference, he revealed that the Sarawak Media Sports Carnival (KASUMeS) 2025 will be held for the first time this year, with competitions organised in three zones. Sibu hosted events for pickleball and futsal on May 15, while Miri held pickleball and darts on May 24.

Kota MADANI Project To Begin In 3Q, Costing RM4 Bln
REGION - CENTRAL > NEWS PUTRAJAYA, June 24 (Bernama) -- The phased development of Kota MADANI in Precinct 19, Putrajaya — a government quarters project — is set to begin in the third quarter (3Q) of this year, with an estimated total cost of RM4 billion. Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) president, Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud, said the project is a federal government initiative following an in-depth study which identified an urgent need for affordable housing, particularly for civil servants. "The government has agreed for the development to proceed under a Private Finance Initiative (PFI), and Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd (PjH), a subsidiary of Petronas, has been appointed to implement the project. The development cost approved by the government is around RM4 billion," he told reporters during a Kota MADANI briefing attended by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories), Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, here today. bootstrap slideshow Fadlun said all development costs will be detailed in a definitive agreement and thoroughly scrutinised by the Public Private Partnership Unit (UKAS), including through value engineering processes to ensure cost efficiency and effectiveness of public investment. "This project is based on the build, lease, maintain and transfer (BLMT) concept, meaning the government does not directly bear the maintenance costs of the quarters but pays through a long-term lease as set by the government. Therefore, the financial burden is significantly lower compared to current models. "This is the approach being introduced for the development of quarters, and the repayment period will also be determined by UKAS. The government is carefully reviewing all implementation costs of this project," he said. Fadlun added that the first phase of the development, beginning this September, will comprise 3,000 residential units under phases 1A and 1B, along with a vertical school expected to be completed by 2027 — allowing educational facilities to operate concurrently with the completion of housing. He said an open tender process will soon be carried out by PjH, stressing that the government will not be directly involved in contractor selection but will closely monitor overall costs and the approved budget ceiling. Occupying 41.28 hectares, Kota MADANI will feature 10,000 high-density vertical residential units for more than 30,000 residents.

MACC: South-East Asia a cyber-fraud hotspot
All smiles: Azam (fifth left) posing for a group photo at Universiti Teknologi MARA. He was in Sabah to attend the ICTMS 2025 . KOTA KINABALU: The region is fast becoming a hub for cyber-enabled fraud, with cross-border criminal syndicates exploiting digital platforms and weak governance systems to carry out large-scale financial scams. Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki, who disclosed this, said recent investigations, both local and through international collaborations, pointed to a disturbing trend of transnational digital crime networks in South-East Asia. 'Digital platforms have become the preferred medium for fraud syndicates. These groups are sophisticated, well-funded and take advantage of gaps in regulation and enforcement across jurisdictions,' he said at the International Conference on Technology, Management and Sustainability (ICTMS 2025) held here yesterday. Azam said Malaysia, in working with partners such as Interpol, has taken steps to disrupt these networks, citing Ops Tropicana, a wide-ranging anti-corruption probe into investment scams and digital fraud operations. 'Ops Tropicana uncovered large-scale investment fraud involving the use of online platforms, digital wallets and cross-border fund transfers. 'These syndicates often enlist professional enablers, including accountants, company secretaries and legal advisers to legitimise their operations,' he revealed. He explained that such operations often presented themselves as legitimate financial services, luring victims through promises of high returns only to funnel illicit profits across borders using digital payment channels that evade conventional monitoring. 'These are not simple scams. They are well-structured operations that combine technology with professional complicity. That makes them much harder to detect and prosecute,' he added. According to MACC intelligence, he said digital fraud syndicates have evolved from petty online scams into highly organised ecosystems, often operating call centres and shell companies across South-East Asia to mask their true activities. Stressing international cooperation was crucial in tackling the threat, given its cross-border nature, Azam said MACC has stepped up collaboration with regional enforcement bodies and global partners. 'We are no longer dealing with isolated domestic corruption. The rise of digital fraud means anti-corruption agencies must now also have cybercrime expertise and international intelligence capabilities,' he added. Azam also said digitalisation without ethical oversight was a recipe for disaster, adding that while digital tools such as AI and blockchain have vast potential, it must be accompanied by strong governance frameworks. 'Without proper oversight, automation can be abused. Without proper controls, these innovations become vulnerabilities, not solutions. Technology is not the enemy. Poor governance is,' he added. The ICTMS 2025 conference, hosted by the Accounting Research Institute (ARI), focused on the intersection of technology, ethics and sustainable governance.
