CBS Sports shares early bowl projection for Auburn
CBS Sports shares early bowl projection for Auburn CBS Sports expects the Auburn Tigers to return to bowl season in 2025 after missing out last year.
After missing out on bowl season last year, the Auburn Tigers are expected to be in the mix to secure a postseason destination in 2025.
CBS Sports recently revealed their early bowl projections, which included the Auburn Tigers. CBS projects Auburn to head to Florida for bowl season to meet up with the Memphis Tigers in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl, which will take place at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida in December. The Gasparilla Bowl, which has also been historically known as the St. Petersburg Bowl and the Beef O'Brady's Bowl, has been played before Christmas since 2017. Last season, Florida defeated Tulane, 33-8, in the game that took place on Dec. 20.
Auburn hopes to re-write its bowl history in 2025
After piecing together its longest bowl streak in program history by playing in nine-consecutive postseason games from 2013-21, Auburn has missed postseason play in two of the last three seasons. Auburn's last bowl win came in 2018 when it defeated Purdue in the Music City Bowl, 63-14. Since then, Auburn has lost four-straight bowl games, including its most recent appearance in 2023 when it lost 31-13 to Maryland in the Music City Bowl.
Auburn is also looking to end a bleak streak in which they have lost seven games in each of the last four seasons. Last year, Auburn finished 5-7 with a 2-6 mark in SEC play. Auburn started the season with a 2-5 record before winning three of its last five games.
The Memphis Tigers could be a quality bowl opponent for Auburn
Auburn's projected bowl opponent, Memphis, won 11 games last season. The Tigers have won four bowl games in five seasons under head coach Ryan Silverfield, which includes a three-game streak. Memphis is projected to be another strong contender in the American Athletic Conference this season alongside Tulane, USF, and Navy.
Gasparilla Bowl history
If this projection were to hold, it would be Auburn's first-ever appearance in the Gasparilla Bowl and the second for Memphis. Memphis lost the inaugural Gasparilla Bowl to USF in 2008, 41-14.

Zach Edey re-sprained left ankle, will undergo surgery and could miss start of next season
Memphis Grizzlies starting center Zach Edey re-sprained his left ankle during an off-season workout and will need to undergo surgery to stabilize it, the team reported on Saturday. The @memgrizz today announced the following medical update for Zach Edey. There is no official timetable for his return, but he is expected to miss the start of the NBA season, his agent Mark Bartelstein of Priority Sports told Shams Charania of ESPN. Edey has battled issues with his ankles, suffering two ankle injuries a year ago in Summer League, then he had another left ankle issue during the season. This injury is an extension of the previous one. Edey, a two-time Wooden Award winner at Purdue, started 55 games for the Grizzlies last season, averaging 9.2 points and 8.3 rebounds a game, leading all rookies in rebounding. Edey was named First Team All-Rookie and was fifth in Rookie of the Year voting. Memphis can start Jaren Jackson Jr. at center, but they prefer to play him at the four next to a more traditional big. Jay Huff is a floor-spacing center that the Grizzlies want to give more minutes next season. However, with Edey out, don't be surprised if Memphis signs another minimum-salary center to start the season, providing some depth and options at the five.

Auburn receives massive jump in ESPN FPI heading into 2025 season
Auburn receives massive jump in ESPN FPI heading into 2025 season The Auburn Tigers have not lived up to expectations on the gridiron for most of the decade, but with back-to-back highly touted recruiting classes and an abundance of impact transfers on the way, Hugh Freeze's squad is expected to compete for at the top half of the SEC in 2025. Those high expectations were displayed in ESPN's opening Football Power Index rankings, in which Auburn was one of the biggest risers from last year's list. The Tigers checked in at the No. 14 spot in the FPI, sandwiched between a pair of fellow SEC teams in Ole Miss (No. 13) and South Carolina (No. 15). The ranking was a huge jump from where the Tigers finished 2024, as Hugh Freeze's team didn't even finish inside of the top 30 after losing the Iron Bowl and missing out on a bowl game. Auburn's 17 spot jump from No. 31 to No. 14 was the largest among teams currently ranked in the top 20. Hugh Freeze's squad is the only program ranked in the top 15 that did not finish last season ranked in the top 25. While the jump, and the company Auburn has enjoyed because of it, may seem like an ambitious projection, it does make sense when looking at the drastically improved nature of the Tigers roster. Next season's version of the Tigers will feature a new signal caller under center, a myriad of four and five-star recruits on the defensive side of the football, and a receiving duo of Cam Coleman and Eric Singleton Jr. that is being described as a top duo in the nation by many experts. The next step for Hugh Freeze's squad is to prove it on Saturdays in the fall. If they don't, the No. 14 team in FPI will fall right back to No. 31 before long.
