There are mounting calls for sports stars and influencers to come out publicly against the dangers of run it-type games, including from the family of a man who died of head trauma over 20 years ago. Palmerston North 19-year-old Ryan Satterthwaite died when he was injured in a tackle game with friends. His uncle Pete has issued a public plea for rugby and rugby players, and social media influencers, to use their platforms to speak out. Jimmy Ellingham reports.

Photo: AAP / New Zealand boxer David Nyika is set to step back in the ring for his first fight since his brutal loss to Jai Opetaia. The Olympic bronze medallist and two-time Commonwealth Games champion will take on Kiwi journeyman Nik Charalampous in Sydney next month. The fight is part of the undercard to the Sonny Bill Williams-Paul Gallen fight on 16 July . Nyika, 29, was knocked out by Australian Opetaia in the fourth round of their IBF world cruiserweight title fight in January. It was his first defeat in his brief professional career. "I'm ready," said Nyika. "My journey restarts here. "Fair play to Jai, he was the better fighter on the night. But true champions get back up again when they get knocked down - and I have no doubt I am going to be world champion." Veteran boxer Charalampous has a 23-6-2 record. "I think Nyika is an overrated pretty boy," Charalampous said. "One of us went 10 rounds with Jai Opetaia, the other got stopped. I'm ready to go hard!"

New Zealand Rugby signs sponsorship deal with Gallagher Insurance

The global insurance brokerage, risk management and consulting company will have its branding on both the training and match day shorts of all NZR's national teams, including the All Blacks, Black Ferns, Māori All Blacks, and Sevens sides. NZR chief executive Mark Robinson said the partnership "reflects the scale, ambition and passion for rugby both our organisations have." "We couldn't be more excited to align with Gallagher Insurance, who already have deep expertise in elite sport, along with a key business focus in New Zealand and globally. This partnership helps solidify where we're heading, not just with our teams on field, but as a sporting brand off the field too." Gallagher Insurance said it sees New Zealand Rugby as a "natural extension of its global sports strategy". Gallagher is headquartered in Rolling Meadows in the US. The All Blacks play a test against Ireland Chicago in November as part of New Zealand's end of year tour.

NZ population likely to reach 6 million by 2040
Photo: RNZ New Zealand's population is likely to reach six million before 2040, from the current 5.3 million, according to latest projections. Stats NZ estimates two thirds of that growth will come from from international migration. The projections released on Wednesday showed the population growing to about 7 million by 2060, and potentially nearly 8 million by the late 2070s. Under a scenario with no migrant arrivals or departures, the population would peak in the early 2040s and then start to fall as deaths outnumber births. "New Zealand's net migration has fluctuated widely from year to year," Stats NZ's Victoria Treliving said. "But international migration has been the main contributor to New Zealand's population growth this century, and this is projected to continue." The scenario of no migration in or out of New Zealand was unlikely, but helped show the impact of migration on population growth, Treliving said. "Natural increase is no longer the main driver of New Zealand's population growth." A much older population is also predicted, with the number aged 65 and over likely to reach one-million by 2029. "The number of people aged 65 years and over is currently increasing by more than 500 people a week," Treliving said. One in six New Zealanders is in that age group at present, and by the mid-2030s this would be one in five. The median projection assumes on average:
