Wild weather swept across the nation and had one small settlement next to Lake Taupo on edge this morning. Homes next to the Taupo-Tauranga River were preparing to evacuate as the waters rose after heavy overnight rain. The weather caused chaos elsewhere too, leading to power outages, road closures and snow. Jimmy Ellingham reports. There are mounting calls for sports stars and influencers to come out publicly against the dangers of run it-type games, including from the family of a man who died of head trauma over 20 years ago. Palmerston North 19-year-old Ryan Satterthwaite died when he was injured in a tackle game with friends. His uncle Pete has issued a public plea for rugby and rugby players, and social media influencers, to use their platforms to speak out. Jimmy Ellingham reports.

Auckland mental health facility rally to save vital service

Staff at an Auckland mental health facility are rallying to save what they say is a vital service for people who would otherwise fall through the cracks. Health New Zealand has put forward a proposal to close Segar House, a publicly funded intensive programme for people with long-standing or chronic mental health problems. Doctors can prescribe medication for 12 months from next year

From next year doctors can prescribe medication for 12 months - up from three months. Health minister Simeon Brown says this will save people paying for GPs to issue repeat prescriptions.
