Chhattisgarh unveils Rs 49,000 crore irrigation & hydropower push in Bastar as anti-Naxal ops clear path

Chhattisgarh has proposed ₹49,000 crore mega irrigation and hydropower projects in Bastar as anti-Naxal operations advance across Left-Wing Extremism-affected districts. About 45 years after the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal Award allocated 301 TMC of water from the Indravati River to Chhattisgarh (then part of Madhya Pradesh), the state has proposed two projects - construction of the Bodhghat dam and interlinking the Indravati and Mahanadi rivers. Despite being allocated 301 TMC of water from the Indravati, the state currently utilises only 25 TMC. The Bodhghat project proposes to use 96.27 TMC. Due to Naxal activity, no dam or related infrastructure could be implemented in Bastar. Of the 8.15 lakh hectares of crop area, irrigation facilities currently exist for only around 1.36 lakh hectares. With anti-Naxal operations now in full swing in Chhattisgarh, the state government has proposed construction of the ₹29,000 crore Bodhghat dam and the ₹20,000 crore interlinking project. According to the proposal, this will provide irrigation facilities for 7 lakh hectares of land. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 7 Mistakes People With $1M+ Make When Hiring Financial Advisors SmartAsset Learn More Undo The two projects will span Naxal-affected districts including Mungeli, Rajnandgaon, Kawardha, Dantewada, Sukma, Bijapur, Kanker, and Narayanpur. According to sources, Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai met Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week and urged that the two projects be granted "national status". This would ensure central funding. In a letter to the Prime Minister, reviewed by ET, Sai stated, "Given the high cost of the project, it is extremely difficult for the state to implement it with its own resources. Therefore, it is requested that these projects be declared as National Projects, so that their implementation can be ensured for the development of Bastar." In addition to irrigation, the Bodhghat multipurpose project is expected to generate 125 MW of electricity and produce 4,824 tonnes of fish annually. It will also supply water for drinking and industrial use. As per the state's proposal, 269 villages will benefit directly. However, there are significant challenges to implementation, including 10,440 hectares of land to be fully submerged, 28 villages to be entirely affected, and 14 to be partially affected. The Indravati-Mahanadi interlinking project will also require clearances from the Central Water Commission and the Ministries of Environment and Tribal Affairs. Live Events

FBI chief's 'hit a cop, you're going to jail' warning sparks online outrage

FBI Director Kash Patel faced backlash after issuing a stern warning to anti-ICE protesters in Los Angeles, cautioning that anyone assaulting cops or taking the law into their own hands would face jail time. "Hit a cop, you're going to jail. Doesn't matter where you came from, how you got here, or what movement speaks to you. If the local police force won't back our men and women on the thin blue line, we @FBI will," Patel had posted on X, warning the demonstrators after a wave of surprise immigration raids in Los Angeles on Friday triggered citywide protests, tense standoffs with police, and dozens of Social media users took a quick note of Kash Patel's warning to the protesters and hit back at the FBI chief, calling him out for the federal agency's different stance taken on the January 6 rioters, with one user saying, "unless you're doing it for Trump". Another user accused him of "overrunning an election".Most of the January 6 rioters were relieved of charges by US President Donald Trump after he took office for the second time this issued "full, complete and unconditional" pardons for around 1,500 people involved in the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol. The group included individuals convicted of violent acts. The move saw Trump fulfilling a campaign promise within the first few hours of his second online tirade against Kash Patel's stern warning continued as another user wrote, "But if you do it wearing Trump merch while rioting at the US Capitol, you'll get a pardon, right, Kash?" More people joined Patel's online bashing, with some of them sharing pictures and videos of rioters clashing with police on January 6, Kash Patel distanced himself from the pardoning of Capitol riots accused during his confirmation hearing as FBI director, saying, "I have always rejected any violence against law enforcement, and I have included in that group specifically addressed any violence against law enforcement on January 6"."I do not agree with the commutation of any sentence of any individual who committed violence against law enforcement," he from Patel, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also invited online ire for writing that the anti-ICE protests are "designed to prevent the removal of Criminal Illegal Aliens from US soil". Hegseth added, "a dangerous invasion facilitated by criminal cartels (aka Foreign Terrorist Organizations) and a huge NATIONAL SECURITY RISK".The Los Angeles raids were part of a broader push by the Trump administration to ramp up deportation efforts nationwide. Trump has vowed record-level removals of undocumented migrants, and White House aide Stephen Miller has reportedly urged ICE to make at least 3,000 arrests Watch

'Deranged behavior': US National Guard deployment in Los Angeles draws sharp reaction from Gavin Newsom

After the arrest of 44 people in crackdowns conducted in Los Angeles by ICE authorities, protests sparked in the region, leading to the deployment of the US National Guard. This move came after police used tear gas on anti-ICE protesters in a move that has sent shockwaves throughout the US. Deployment of the US National Guard has drawn sharp reaction from California Governor, Gavin Newsom, who called the potential deployment of US Marines in his state 'deranged'. Newsom took to X to say, 'The Secretary of Defense is now threatening to deploy active-duty Marines on American soil against its own citizens. This is deranged behavior.' It was Pete Hegseth, Donald Trump's hardline defense secretary, who floated the idea of deploying the US National Guard onto the streets of Los Angeles, which is a Democrat-run state. 'Under President Trump, violence & destruction against federal agents & federal facilities will NOT be tolerated. It's COMMON SENSE,' Hegseth wrote on X around the issue, triggering further shockwaves in the US political landscape. It all started with a stand-off between border patrol personnel in tactical gear and gas masks and the incoming wave of protesters. As soon as things began escalating, police began deploying tear gas, and protesters also threw objects at them to retaliate. Even one car was reportedly set alight, according to The Guardian. This triggered Trump's call to send in the national guard, a move that has drawn concerns among critics that the United States is slowly moving towards authoritarianism and dictatorship. 'The federal government is taking over the California National Guard and deploying 2,000 soldiers in Los Angeles – not because there is a shortage of law enforcement, but because they want a spectacle. Don't give them one.' Newsom was also quoted as saying about the incident. Meanwhile, Trump praised the US National Guard for curbing the protests on Truth Social, saying, "Great job by the National Guard in Los Angeles after two days of violence, clashes and unrest.'
