Pakistan in doubt for hockey Asia Cup after reports of visa denial
The ongoing situation following the Pahalgam terror attack has put a question mark over Pakistan's participation in tournaments to be hosted by India later this year. The men's Asia Cup hockey in Rajgir from August 27-September 7, also a qualifying event for the 2026 World Cup, is the most obvious one.
Hockey India secretary general Bhola Nath Singh has insisted that 'no discussions on the issue have been held so far but any decision will be taken only according to government guidelines' with the government having the final authority on the subject. 'We have not thought about it but it is not something we can decide on, we will wait for and abide by whatever the government decides,' Singh added.
Incidentally, Singh is also a vice-president of the Asian Hockey Federation, making him a representative of both the national and continental organisation.
While there is no official word from the AHF, Hockey India or even PHF at the moment, reports from Pakistan have claimed that the team has already been formally refused visas.
If true, it needs to be seen how the FIH and the Asian body move ahead. The FIH, while not directly involved, is keeping a close eye on the developments and sources admitted the international body will have to take a call soon.
More so, since the FIH Junior World Cup is also scheduled to be held in Chennai-Madurai in December. Pakistan had earlier been denied visas for the 2016 JWC as well after the terrorist attack on a military camp with Malaysia stepping in as replacement on the basis of rankings.
Besides hockey, Chennai will also be hosting the WSF World Cup squash in December. The SRFI has also said it is too early at this stage to say anything. The Squash World Cup is a mixed-gender event with the 2023 edition — of eight teams without Pakistan — also held in Chennai.

London, June 7 (UNI) England spinner Sophie Ecclestone will take a break from domestic cricket as she manages a quad injury and to "prioritise her wellbeing". Ecclestone, 26, was left out of England's first squad under new coach Charlotte Edwards because she was recovering from a knee injury. She played for the UP Warriorz in India's Women's Premier League in February but was sidelined for two months and missed the beginning of Lancashire's domestic season. The left-arm spinner has since played two one-day matches and six T20s for her county, but was withdrawn from their match against Hampshire on Tuesday because of the quad problem. "Sophie has been managing a quad niggle over the past week but more importantly she wants to take a step back from cricket for a short period to look after herself," said Edwards. "We're totally behind that. We want to be able to select Sophie for the India series but the most important thing for her at the moment is that she feels in a better place. "We all agree that a break now could be beneficial for her to achieve that." England insisted Ecclestone's omission from the squad for the ongoing West Indies series was not related to the controversy that overshadowed an awful Ashes tour of Australia earlier this year. During England's 16-0 series defeat Ecclestone refused to take part in a TV interview conducted by former team-mate Alex Hartley, following her criticism of England's fitness during the T20 World Cup in November. England have comfortably beaten West Indies, winning both the one-day international and T20 series, but are expected to face a much greater challenge against India, who are also hosting the 50-over World Cup at the end of September. "Mental health is so important," Hartley told BBC Test Match Special during the final ODI against West Indies at Taunton. London [UK], June 7 (ANI): Former captain Nasser Hussain has urged England to pick seasoned left-arm spinner Liam Dawson in their 2026 T20 World Cup squad after he delivered a "masterclass" in the series-opening win over West Indies on Friday. In his 12th T20I and his first in three years for England, Dawson was adjudged the Player of the Match after returning with figures 4/20 for the hosts in their 21-run triumph against the West Indies. The T20 World Cup is set to be held in India and Sri Lanka early next year, two Asian countries known for their spin-favouring conditions. Despite his sporadic career with the Three Lions, Hussain has advocated for the inclusion of the 35-year-old ball tweaker in the marquee tournament. Asian champion 100m hurdler Jyothi Yarraji leads India's 4-gold show in Taiwan Open
Asian champion Jyothi Yarraji won the women's 100m hurdles race with yet another impressive time as four Indians won gold in the Taiwan Athletics Open here on Saturday. National record holder Yarraji clocked 12.99 seconds to pocket the gold at the Taipei Municipal Stadium, ahead of Japanese runners Asuka Terada (13.04 seconds) and Chisato Kiyoyama (13.10 seconds), who took the silver and bronze respectively. The 25-year-old Yarraji had won gold in the Asian Championships in South Korea on May 29 with a time of 12.96 seconds.
