SEOUL, June 24 — Sookmyung Women's University of South Korea has cancelled the master's degree awarded to former first lady Kim Keon-hee after determining that her thesis was plagiarised, Yonhap news agency reported.
In a statement today, the university said the decision was made by a committee under its Graduate School of Education to 'uphold research ethics and strengthen academic credibility.'
Kim, the wife of ousted President Yoon Suk Yeol, received her master's degree from the university based on a thesis submitted in 1999.
The university began investigating plagiarism allegations in mid-December 2022.
Shortly after, Kookmin University announced it had begun procedures to revoke Kim's doctoral degree.
The institution cited the Higher Education Act, which states that a valid master's degree is a prerequisite for admission to a doctoral programme.
If that qualification is revoked, the candidate becomes ineligible for the doctoral degree. — Bernama/Yonhap

Singapore-China ties more important than ever amid global uncertainty, says PM Wong

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on June 24. - ST photo/Yew Lun Tian BEIJING: The relationship between Singapore and China is more important than before amid global turbulence and uncertainty, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong told Chinese President Xi Jinping on June 24. 'We can work together to establish closer ties and also to cooperate in regional and multilateral platforms, to continue to strengthen multilateralism and the rules-based global order for the benefit of all countries,' Wong said at the meeting in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Wong's visit to China comes as the global order post-World War II which allowed for free trade has come under threat with the US imposition of high tariffs on goods from much of the world, especially from China. 'In the face of the current chaotic international situation, China is willing to strengthen strategic co-operation with Singapore, tighten the bonds of co-operation, and join hands to address challenges, to bring more benefits to the people of the two countries,' Xi told Wong. Both leaders last met in November 2024 in Lima, Peru, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit. Wong is on a five-day official visit to China, his first as prime minister. He told Xi that he chose China as the first country to make an introductory visit outside of South-East Asia, and this reflects the close and steadfast partnership between Singapore and China. Reiterating a point that he made when he met with Premier Li Qiang the day before on June 23, Wong told Xi that the relationship between Singapore and China is built on a deep level of mutual respect, trust and understanding. Wong said that this relationship started even before both countries established diplomatic ties 35 years ago, starting with Singapore's founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and China's leader Deng Xiaoping. 'President Xi is in a unique position, I think, to have engaged and met with all the prime ministers of Singapore, Lee Kuan Yew, Goh Chok Tong, Lee Hsien Loong, and now me,' he said. Wong will meet Chairman of the National People's Congress Zhao Leji on June 24 after the meeting with Xi. With this, he would have met the top three leaders in China. Wong will then head to Tianjin to attend the World Economic Forum's (WEF) Annual Meeting of the New Champions, more commonly known as Summer Davos, and take part in a dialogue session with WEF President Borge Brende on June 25. - The Straits Times/ANN

Anwar says KL's future is public transport, not private cars, as 2040 blueprint unveiled

KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said public transport will serve as the backbone of future development in Malaysia's capital under the Kuala Lumpur Local Plan 2040 (PTKL40). He said new infrastructure projects under the Transport Ministry, including the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT), have been identified to support this shift. 'In this local plan, the city hall's priority is not private vehicles, but public transport. We make decisions in favour of the majority,' he said during his speech at the PTKL40 launch, held at Institut Latihan Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) in Cheras here. 'That's why I said new projects identified under the Transport Ministry, such as the MRT and others, are meant to form the backbone of the city, ensuring comfort for everyone.' Adding to Anwar's remarks, Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Maimunah Mohd Sharif said the plan aims for 70 per cent public transport usage by 2040, supported by the Traffic Master Plan and pedestrian and cycling routes. 'Initiatives such as micromobility and covered green pathways are direct examples of how this plan is being translated into action,' she said in her speech. Maimunah added that DBKL is also developing the Urban Digital Twin Kuala Lumpur, which will enable real-time updates of development data. 'This will ensure that our policies and actions are based on facts, not perceptions, a practice that reflects the values of accountability and integrity, and marks a reform in governance at DBKL,' she added. Meanwhile, Anwar also highlighted that all new housing developments must include solar power as part of their design under PTKL40. 'These are new requirements that have not existed in our regulations or laws before. This will ensure the sustainability of the city,' he added. PTKL40 was gazetted in May this year and came into force on June 11. The plan incorporates 12 development principles, including site suitability, basic amenities, utility networks, and environmental harmony, to ensure that new developments do not burden existing systems but instead strengthen them. Maimunah said the plan also identifies reserved areas for future facilities and introduces concepts such as stratified, mixed-use, and integrated development. 'We do not want Kuala Lumpur to be merely a dense city, but one that is friendly and human-centric, another core principle within the Malaysia Madani framework,' she said. PTKL2040 also sets a minimum target of 20 square metres of open space per city resident, equivalent to over 4,700 hectares. To promote a healthy and active lifestyle, community parks are set to be linked through a 254-kilometre Green Connector network. The plan also targets the development of 305,000 affordable housing units by 2040. Building height controls are being introduced to preserve the character of low-intensity areas. A total of 139 areas have been identified as having redevelopment potential, with a focus on ageing public housing estates.
