Serdang bus crash: Driver gets seven days' jail, RM8,000 fine
Magistrate Nur Nastasya Mohtarudin meted out the sentence on Mohamad Hamir Masrudin, 44, after he pleaded guilty to a charge under the Road Transport Act 1987 on Tuesday (Aug 5).
The court also ordered Hamir to serve seven months in jail if he fails to settle the fine.
According to the charge sheet, Hamir was accused of reckless driving that endangers the public at Jalan Persiaran Universiti 1 at 12.18pm on Saturday.
He was charged under Section 42 (1) of the Act, which provides for a maximum of five years in jail and a fine between RM5,000 and RM15,000, as well as disqualification from holding a driving licence for at least five years, upon conviction.

Earlier, the accused, who was unrepresented, asked the court for a lenient sentence as he worked part-time and had to support his family, including a sick mother.
Deputy public prosecutor Nurain Syafiqeen Mohd Rozi urged the court to impose a just sentence.
"The accused had driven recklessly and dangerously. In this case, three children and a teacher were hurt by his driving," she said.
On Saturday, Serdang OCPD Asst Comm Muhamad Farid Ahmad said an accident occurred involving a bus carrying five teachers and 30 kindergarten children on an outing.
Dashcam footage that went viral on social media showed the bus going out of control before veering off the road and crashing into a tree.
Three children and one teacher sustained head injuries and received outpatient treatment at Hospital Serdang.
The bus driver was detained to assist in investigations under Section 42 of the Road Transport Act 1987.

Naazron said a remand application under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code would be filed against the woman tomorrow. Couple hired by loan shark nabbed over fatal blaze
JOHOR BARU: A couple, believed to have been hired by a Singapore-based loan shark, was arrested for suspicion of starting a house fire. The fire killed a 72-year-old woman in Kampung Bukit Siput, Segamat, on July 25. State police chief Comm Ab Rahaman Arsad said police received an emergency call regarding a fire involving five houses at about 4.30am. 'Investigations by the police and the Fire Department found elements of arson. 'We then formed a special task force and nabbed a couple, a 21-year-old and his 19-year-old girlfriend in Subang Jaya, Selangor, a week after the incident. 'During the interrogation it was revealed that a loan shark syndicate in Singapore hired them to carry out criminal intimidation by setting fire to the house of a borrower who had failed to repay a loan,' he told a press conference yesterday, Bernama reported. Comm Ab Rahaman said investigations found that the couple were suspected of actively committing mischief in Johor and Selangor since July, receiving RM1,000 for each job. 'At the time of the incident, the woman was alone. 'She had never received any threat. It is believed that the loan was taken out by a family member.' Comm Ab Rahaman said four investigation papers had been referred to the state legal advisor's office with instructions for prosecution. Two girls deny assaulting, unlawfully confining schoolmate
SUNGAI PETANI: Two 13-year-old girls pleaded not guilty at the Magistrate's Court here to two charges of assault and wrongfully confining a schoolmate. The Form One students entered their plea after the joint charges were read before magistrate Mohamad Azlan Basri. On the first charge, both accused are alleged to have voluntarily caused hurt to the 13-year-old victim in a school toilet at 6.40 pm on July 14. They were charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of one year, fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. On the second charge, both accused are alleged to have wrongfully confined the victim at the same location, time and date, Bernama reported. This charge was brought under Section 342 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of one year, fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction. Earlier, deputy public prosecutor Nur Hazwani Md Nor requested the court impose a bail of RM4,000 on each accused. Counsel N. Nagaratnam sought a reduction, citing that both accused were still students. The court set bail at RM2,000 each with one surety, on condition that neither accused shall contact the victim.
