Duo take on Top Gear-style old car Alps challenge
Two men are set for a Top Gear-style challenge when they drive an old banger across the Alps for charity.
Ashley Brough was tasked with buying a car for £1,000 or less, so he could take part in the Rusty Rally organised by young people's charity The Outward Bound Trust.
He and friend Wayne Murcott, from Shenstone, Staffordshire, will be one of 10 teams on the four-day tour, which will take the convoy through France, Switzerland, Italy, Germany and Austria.
Mr Brough, from Uttoxeter, told BBC Radio Stoke he had decided to take on a 25-year-old Mercedes diesel estate car, which "smelled like someone had died in it" when he got it,
"I've been using a lot of air fresheners," he said.
"My wife calls it a hearse. It was pretty ropey, I'll be honest with you, but I think that's the beauty of the challenge."
The adventure begins in Annecy, France on Wednesday, with Mr Brough and Mr Murcott driving under the team name "Les Knobbies".
As part of preparations, the vehicle has been checked over by local dealership Angus MacKinnon and Mr Brough said that while he was a "little bit worried", he was confident he would not have a brake or tyre failure.
"It's going to be bittersweet, because in one half of my mind I'm going to be worried to death that were going to be breaking down," he said.
"On the other hand, it's going to be the most stunning scenery that I'll be taking in."
Mr Brough, who chairs The Community Foundation for Staffordshire and Shropshire, has already raised more than £10,000 for The Outward Bound Trust so far, with the event as a whole aiming to raise £100,000.
The charity runs outdoor adventures and courses for young people with the aim of encouraging them to get out of their comfort zone.

Iga Swiatek alongside Casper Ruud? Or Naomi Osaka with Nick Kyrgios? Those are among the high-wattage pairs on Tuesday's preliminary entry list for the reimagined U.S. Open mixed doubles tournament on Aug. 19-20, before singles competition begins Aug. 24. Advertisement Ten of the top 11 women in the WTA singles rankings — Coco Gauff, who just won the French Open for her second Grand Slam title, is the only one missing — and 10 of the top 11 men on the ATP tour, including No. 1 Jannik Sinner and 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic, have registered to compete for the $1 million top prize that will be split by the winners, an $800,000 increase over last year. 'Look at the field we have,' said Stacey Allaster, who's in her final year as U.S. Open tournament director. 'It is going to be fantastic for the fans.' ___ Howard Fendrich has been the AP's tennis writer since 2002. Find his stories here: More AP tennis:

Justin Reid picks off Kyler Murray to win NFL chess tournament
In the fourth edition of Blitzchamps, a chess tournament featuring eight current and former NFL players, Justin Reid emerged as the winner, taking home the largest share of the $100,000 prize pool for charity. Two-time Super Bowl-winning safety Reid, who signed with the New Orleans Saints this offseason, won his second straight Blitzchamps, beating Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray in the finals on June 16. The eight participants to compete for charity in high-speed chess were Reid, Murray, Justin Herbert, Mack Hollins, Richard Sherman, Rashawn Slater, AJ Dillon, and Harrison Phillips. Players played online on and it was livestreamed on the site's YouTube channel. Congratulations to New Orleans Saints Justin Reid for winning #BlitzChamps IV! He's the first EVER back-to-back BlitzChamps Champion and has won $30,000 toward his charity, @jreidindeed! 🎉 — (@chesscom) June 16, 2025 Reid said on the stream post-tournament: 'I love (chess). I'm obsessed with it. I play it almost every day. Whenever we're getting ready to play a game (in the NFL) and you start to get excited because you know that moment is coming where you're about to go into combat with your brothers, I play one or two games to calm myself down and bring myself back to peace because I play my best when I'm calm and thinking clearly, rather then when I'm jacked up on emotion. Advertisement 'So in those two ways, the games are very similar. You get too emotional and you make mistakes, a blunder here and there. If you stay calm under pressure, it ends up translating pretty well. … Sometimes you can see what your opponent is about to do before they do it. Both on the chess board and football field so you do a move to counter that before they even get to it.' Reid won $30,000 for his charity, JReid Indeed, which focuses on supporting disadvantaged youth and communities through interactive programs, community engagement, and technology access in the communities of Houston, Baton Rouge, and Kansas City. It was a double-elimination format, with a winners and losers bracket. All matches were best-of-two, and each player started with five minutes on the clock in the winners' bracket, three minutes in the losers' bracket, and both had one-second increments with each move (considered time to move the piece). In the event of a tie, players competed in a sudden-death match, as happened in the final. Reid defeated Murray 2-1 in a repeat matchup of last year's Blitzchamps III final. Murray resigned in the third game after a blunder when he moved h4, trapping his Queen when Reid moved Bg4, but the quarterback still won $20,000 for the Kyler Murray Foundation.

Germany U21 predicted XI versus England U21
Germany will look to secure top spot in Group B with a win against defending champions England in the under-21 EUROS. In their first two group games, Germany put in two very convincing displays against Slovenia (3-0 win) and Czechia (4-2 win) and have laid down a statement for their intent in this competition. Advertisement Antonio di Salvio has named an unchanged side in the previous two games, and it is likely that he will do it again as they face a tough England side. Germany's squad is a team that is full of Bundesliga experience, with several players regulars for their teams and a large group of them also playing in the upper echelons of the league. It goes to show the wealth of talent this current Germany under-21 side possesses. The only change will be Max Rosenfelder. The Freiburg centre-back picked up two yellow cards meaning he will be suspended for the final group game. The standout for the Germany team in this competition has been Nick Woltemade. The Stuttgart striker has been unplayable in the previous two games, with a hat-trick against Slovenia and then a goal and two assists against Czechia. After his breakthrough season at the MHP Arena this season, next season is already set to be a big one for the striker named 'Woltemessi'. Player to Watch: Nicolo Tresoldi The Italian-born striker has had a quiet Euros compared to his striker partner. However, the 20-year-old already has a goal and an assist in two games. After a poor season at Hannover and a goal drought with the national team, Tresoldi can use this tournament as a jump pad to allow him to start fresh at Club Brugge next summer. Advertisement There are also plenty of other names that could be pointed out, such as Rocco Reitz and Paul Nebel in midfield. The latter had a great season with Mainz as they qualified for the Conference League. Predicted Germany XI: Noah Atubolu – Nnmadi Collins, Tim Oermann, Bright Arrey-Mbi, Nathanial Brown – Eric Martel, Paul Nebel, Rocco Reitz – Brajan Gruda, Nicolo Tresoldi, Nick Woltemade GGFN | Jack Meenan
