Khaled: Bee farming, oyster mushroom planting projects a boon for army families

GEORGE TOWN: A project under the Madani Economy initiative, implemented in military camps nationwide with an allocation of RM10 million, is proving successful in generating additional income for the families of military personnel.
It also serves a dual purpose by supporting downstream industry development and food security efforts.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the readiness of the Malaysian Armed Forces does not solely depend on assets and troop training, but also took into account the wellbeing of their families, who are the backbone of the defence community's stability in the country.
He cited for example how stingless bee farming and oyster mushroom cultivation projects by the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (2 RAMD) community at the Sungai Ara Camp were helping the families of army personnel productively spend their time — especially since some of the personnel are expected to be deployed on a mission to Lebanon next year.
"When we talk about readiness, it is not just about assets, but also about the personnel and their families. We appreciate the contributions and sacrifices of the armed forces and understand that the wellbeing of their families is equally important.
"We have been thinking about how to improve the wellbeing of these families. With strategic partners from the Ministry of Higher Education, we have identified certain knowledge areas that can be transferred through the Madani Economy initiative to families within the camps," he said during a working visit to the Sungai Ara Camp here today.
Present were the Defence Ministry's secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali, Army Chief General Tan Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, Western Field Commander Lieutenant General Datuk Malek Razak Sulaiman and Second Division Commander Major General Datuk Fazal Abdul Rahman.
Khaled said the programme, which incorporates smart agriculture elements and technical training, also provided entrepreneurial education to members of the Armed Forces Family Welfare Association (BAKAT) 2 RAMD.
The stingless bee honey project is already being marketed, while the oyster mushroom produce is currently in discussions to be marketed through the Malaysian Armed Forces Trading Corporation (Pernama).
"Even the spent mushroom blocks can be used as organic fertiliser, making this project not only sustainable but also highly scalable due to the encouraging response we have received.
"For the mushroom project, for instance, 20 participants have joined through the Mushroom Activity Centre, and this number is expected to grow if demand increases. If we have the space and facilities, we are ready to expand participation.
"This is just the beginning to spark interest and prove that the project can bring real benefits and returns to participants," he added.
He said that the stingless bee project in the camp used systematic beekeeping via "log hives" and biotechnology-based rearing techniques developed in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).
Meanwhile, the oyster mushroom farming employed enclosed mushroom houses with controlled temperature and humidity, ensuring high-quality and consistent yields, supported by Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP).
Earlier, Khaled also reviewed operational readiness, troop welfare, and evaluated the progress of community development initiatives in the military.
He also met with around 300 residents of the Sungai Ara Camp and handed over RM500 in welfare aid to 15 chronic patients from among military personnel and their families stationed in the area.

Govt Strengthens National Policies Via MADANI Economy Framework -- PM Anwar

BUSINESS By Engku Shariful Azni Engku Ab Latif KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 (Bernama) -- The MADANI government has boldly and decisively shaped the direction of national policies through the formulation of a comprehensive framework known as the MADANI Economy that is based on sustainability, the people's well-being, and governance with integrity. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that under this framework, the government has initiated structural economic reforms, including the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP 2030), National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR), National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS), and National TVET Policy 2030. In addition, the private sector has forged ahead along with the government -- for example, the GEAR-uP programme, led by government-linked investment companies, has boosted domestic direct investments. 'The KL20 Action Plan was also introduced with the aspiration of making Kuala Lumpur one of the top 20 global startup ecosystems. Since its launch in April 2024, the capital's position in the 2025 Global Startup Ecosystem Report has risen to 68th place, with 4,464 registered startups. 'We are now on the right track to reach the target of 5,000 startups by the end of this year. At the same time, venture capital firms with average assets under management (AUM) reaching US$400 million have also shown interest in operating in Malaysia,' he said when tabling the 13MP in Parliament today. Anwar said that to further stimulate domestic economic activity, investments through strategic collaborations with the industry continue to be strengthened. This includes initiatives like the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) and the Kulim Hi-Tech Park (KHTP), which have successfully attracted both foreign and domestic investments in high-tech sectors. He also noted that development efforts have been expanded to include the Kerian Integrated Green Industrial Park (KIGIP) and the Automotive High Tech Valley (AHTV) in Tanjung Malim, Perak, as well as strategic industrial parks in Sabah and Sarawak.

[UPDATED] Govt to boost domestic food production under 13th Malaysia Plan

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia aims to significantly boost domestic food production over the next five years, with a strong focus on developing large-scale agriculture in Kelantan, Pahang, Terengganu, Sabah, and Sarawak. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced this today during the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP). Anwar said the implementation of the five-season padi planting programme over two years would be expedited and expanded in key areas such as Mada (Kedah and Perlis), Kada (Kelantan), and integrated agricultural development areas in Selangor, Perak, and Penang. "In addition, research, development, commercialisation, and innovation (RDCI) activities, and the adoption of smart agriculture will be intensified," he said. Under the 13MP, more satellite farms will be established through collaboration between farmers, young agropreneurs, research institutions, and industry players. Priority will be given to technology transfer, including the development of new crop varieties and farming techniques, the adoption of modern machinery through agri-food mechanisation and automation programmes, and more efficient land management. "Food import sources will also be diversified to avoid over-reliance on any single country," Anwar said. "At the same time, regulations governing food imports will be strengthened to ensure food safety and quality." He added that to improve the overall food supply chain, the efficiency of collection, processing, grading, and distribution centres, as well as small- and medium-scale retail sectors, would be enhanced. "There needs to be a shift in mindset, so that the public no longer sees agriculture as merely subsistence activity, but as a highly profitable economic opportunity," he said. "All these efforts are expected to raise the agri-food subsector's value-added contribution to RM58 billion by 2030." The five-year 13MP, covering the period from 2026 to 2030, provides a strategic framework for the country's economic, social, and environmental priorities. The plan comes as Malaysia navigates an increasingly complex global environment and embarks on an ambitious domestic reform agenda. It will also serve as a k ey policy platform for the unity government, which has anchored much of its governance on the principles of the Madani Economy.

Anwar says 13MP is Malaysia's big reset for a fairer, smarter future

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has described the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) as a beacon of transformation to help the people face increasingly complex challenges, particularly in light of evolving global economic and geopolitical landscapes. Anwar, who is also Finance Minister, said the 13MP, themed 'Melakar Semula Pembangunan' (Redesigning Development), marks a renewed national effort through sound and decisive planning to realise the overarching aspirations of the Madani Economy framework. '(This includes) addressing the rising cost of living, slow wage growth, the transition to an ageing nation, environmental degradation, and the persistent impacts of climate change,' he said in his foreword of the 13MP document released by the Ministry of Economy today. He said the 13MP is not a conventional government blueprint, but a concerted endeavour to embody the people's aspirations, rooted in the principles of 'Maqasid Syariah', and driven by the priority of upholding human dignity. 'To realise this aspiration, we will build a social system that guarantees a decent and dignified life, not merely focused on access and material achievements, but one that reinforces the spiritual foundation, human values, and intellectual excellence of every citizen,' he said. Anwar stressed that good governance, one that is transparent, agile and accountable, grounded in Madani principles, is a prerequisite for upholding both moral and political responsibility. 'Robust governance is not merely a policy supplement, but a vital instrument to ensure national wealth is distributed fairly and equitably to the people, regardless of background,' he said. In order to achieve developed nation status by 2030, he said it is essential to accelerate economic growth, for instance by raising the ceiling. 'Towards this end, efforts must be focused on diversifying the economy by shifting towards value creation based on digitalisation and artificial intelligence,' he added. 'We will also foster a culture of innovation to diversify the production of high-value products proudly branded 'Made by Malaysia',' he added. 'This aspiration will be supported through the development of a skilled and diverse talent pool, spanning from science and technology to the arts and creative industries. Anwar also underlined that this developmental discourse will align with environmental sustainability, reflecting the nation's commitment to protecting the Earth as a sacred trust for future generations. 'Beyond strengthening domestic development, Malaysia will also broaden its international engagement in pursuit of its ambition to emerge as a leading economy in South-east Asia. 'Therefore, the nation must distinguish itself as a prime destination for high-quality and high-value investments, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence, semiconductors and renewable energy,' he said. He said Malaysia's resolve to advance the global Islamic economy will continue, through the expansion of Islamic financial products and the strengthening of the halal industry, supported by international partnerships to access and penetrate new global markets. The prime minister also expressed deep appreciation to all those who contributed tirelessly to the formulation of the 13MP. 'Despite the turbulence and arduous journey, often testing our spirit and clarity of thought, this policy was successfully crafted through inclusive discourse and consensus, reflecting our shared love for this nation. 'A plan of this magnitude can only materialise through the ideas, effort, energy, cooperation and synergy of all parties and ministries, united in purpose and committed to the spirit of teamwork. This is the true essence of Madani,' he said. Anwar also called on all Malaysians to work together in realising the 13MP agenda and expressed confidence that it will chart a new chapter in Malaysia's history, delivering meaningful success that uplifts the nation's dignity and shapes a civilised and competent society. — Bernama
