Led deadliest attacks: Who is Basavraj, top Maoist man killed in Abujhmad encounter?
In a major breakthrough in the fight against Left Wing Extremism, security forces have gunned down top Maoist leader Nambala Keshav Rao, popularly known as Basavraj. He is one of the 26 Naxals killed in the encounter in Abujhmad, Chhattisgarh.
Basavraj succeeded Ganapathy as CPI (Maoist) general secretary in 2018. Ganapathy or Muppala Lakshman Rao was the first general secretary after the People's War and MCC merged in 2004 to form the CPI (Maoist). He is believed to have fled to the Philippines.
Basavraj, who graduated from REC Warangal, is around 70. He is best known for leading the attacks in which Maoist killed 76 CRPF personnel at Chintalnar, and for ambushing a Congress convoy at Jhiram Ghati in which state party leaders were stabbed and gunned down.
He hails from Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh and was attracted to the CPI(ML) People's War Group from an early age. He eventually joined it in the early 1980s.
Prior to getting attracted to Maoist ideology, Basavraj was a kabaddi player in school and junior college. He was known to be one of the most academically accomplished Naxal leaders, with a B.Tech degree from the National Institute of Technology, Warangal.
Basavraj was heading the CPI (Maoist) Military Commission when, in November 2018, he was asked to take over as the General Secretary after the resignation of Ganapathy.
Keshava Rao graduated at a time when the NIT, which was earlier known as Regional Engineering College (REC), had become a fountainhead of Maoist ideology and many students who studied at the institute went on to join the Maoist movement.
He is known to have hobnobbed with other guerrilla movements like the LTTE and worked extensively in Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and Chhattisgarh.
He was also known as an explosives expert who prepared deadly IEDs used to ambush security forces, and was the NIA's most wanted man with a reward of over Rs 1 crore.
The killing of Araku Telugu Desam Party MLA Kidari Sarveswara Rao and ex-MLA Siveri Soma on September 23, 2018, by the Maoists is attributed to a plan set in motion by Basvaraj.
According to sources, the operation by the District Reserve Guard (DRG) from four districts of Narayanpur, Dantewada, Bijapur and Kondagaon was undertaken based on information that a senior Maoist leader was hiding in a specific area in Abujhmad.
The Abujhmad is unsurveyed land larger than the state of Goa. While a large part of it is in Narayanpur, it also extends to Bijapur, Dantewada, Kanker and Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district.

15 new arts and science colleges, but sans fresh recruitment faculty feel the heat in Tamil Nadu
CHENNAI: As announced in this year's budget, the state has inaugurated 11 new arts and science colleges for 2025-26 and CM MK Stalin said four more colleges will be opened soon. However, no fresh recruitment of staff, particularly teaching faculty, has irked the staff members who are already working in government arts and science colleges across the state. The higher education department will be spending around Rs 25.27 crore in the first year for running the 11 colleges, each of which will offer five new courses and admit 280 students. Though the department has created 12 teaching posts in each of these colleges for this year, the staff have not been freshly recruited, instead transferred from other colleges on deputation. Alleging that the 175 government arts and science colleges in Tamil Nadu, including the newly-inaugurated ones, are already facing a staff crunch due to non recruitment in the past 10 years, academicians have urged the government to focus on recruitment instead of running the show by temporary arrangements.

Amit Shah honours police team that scalped Basavaraju
NEW DELHI: Home minister Amit Shah on Saturday met and felicitated officers of the Chhattisgarh Police who played a key role in the recent anti-Naxal operations in Bijapur and Narayanpur that led to the elimination of top CPI(Maoist) leader Nambala Keshav Rao alias Basavaraju and 57 others. On X later, Shah said, "Met the officers who played a crucial role in the recent anti-Naxal operations and congratulated them on the historic success of these operations. I am eager to meet the brave jawans who made these operations successful with their courage, and will soon visit Chhattisgarh to meet them. The Modi govt is committed to freeing India from the menace of Naxalism." The officers honoured by Shah, in the presence of Chhattisgarh CM Vishnu Deo Sai and Deputy CM Vijay Kumar Sharma, included Chhattisgarh DGP Arun Dev Gautam, ADGP (anti-Naxal operations) Vivekanand, IGP (Bastar Range) Sundarraj P, SP Narayanpur Prabhat Kumar, SP Bijapur Jitendra Yadav and SP Bastar Shalabh Singh. As part of stepped up offensive in the Maoists' last bastions, the Chhattisgarh Police and the CRPF, with other state police forces, BSF and Indian Air Force, had undertaken a 21-day operation in April-May in the Karreguttalu Hills on the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border. The operation led to the neutralisation of 31 Naxalites, including some senior members of the dreaded People's Liberation Guerrilla Army Battalion No. 1, and the recovery of a huge cache of arms and supplies. In another operation in Narayanpur on May 21, personnel from Chhattisgarh Police's District Reserve Guard eliminated Basavaraju and 26 other Naxalites.
