Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve becomes India's 3rd most visited park
Guwahati (Assam) [India], May 19 (ANI): Assam's Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve has emerged as the third most visited national park in India, recording an all-time high in tourist footfall this year.
The park witnessed a significant rise in foreign tourists, with a 25 per cent increase compared to the previous year.
According to the authority of Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve, the national park recorded 4,43,636 visitors between October 1, 2024, and May 18, 2025, indicating an overall increase of over 35 per cent since last year.
The number of foreigners (18,463) was especially notable, hinting at the World Heritage site's position as a top-choice destination for tourists and wildlife enthusiasts.
Spread over 1300 sq kms, in 4 districts of Assam, Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes.
The national park boasts several wetlands and comprises two Important Bird Areas (IBAs) recognised for their importance to waterbirds-Kaziranga National Park and Laokhowa and Burhachapori Wildlife Sanctuaries. Home to a remarkable population of the 'Big Five,' it comprises 2,613 Greater one-horned Rhinoceroses, as of the 2022 census; 104 Bengal Tigers in 2022; over 1,228 Asian Elephants projected for 2024; 2,565 Wild Water Buffalos in 2022; and 1,129 Eastern Swamp Deer also recorded in 2022.
Dr Sonali Ghosh, Field Director of Kaziranga National Park & Tiger Reserve, told ANI that this year, Kaziranga witnessed over 4.43 lakh visitors.
'We have come to the end of the tourism season in Kaziranga for this year, which started from 1st October 2024 and ended on 18 May 2025. We have received more than 4.43 lakh visitors in the park, out of which over 18,000 are foreigners... an increase of 35 per cent from last year. We also saw an increase of 25 per cent in foreign tourists this season. Kaziranga has now become the 3rd most visited national park in the country. Also, this season, the revenue amounted to over Rs 11 crore,' Dr Ghosh said.
According to official data, in 2014-15, 1,32,930 tourists, including 7,994 foreign tourists, visited Kaziranga National Park. In 2023-24, 3,28,305 tourists, including 14,817 foreign tourists, visited the national park.
This year (2024-25), saw a footfall of 4,25,173 Indian and 18,463 foreign tourists.
Kaziranga has diversified its offerings with new attractions such as bird watching, trekking, boat tourism, dolphin viewing, cycling tracks, and safaris in adjacent reserves.
Visits by prominent figures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and over 60 Heads of Mission, along with the External Affairs Minister, during Advantage Assam 2.0 in February 2025 boosted Kaziranga's visibility.
The surge in tourism has stimulated the local economy, creating jobs and supporting businesses in hospitality, transport, and handicrafts.
One major breakthrough was the establishment of unique Eco-shops, operated by the Kaziranga Staff Welfare Society, which helped provide a ready market for eco-friendly products.
Efforts from the park's authority have led to the promotion of off-beat tourism activities in the buffer areas. Be it cycling at Laokhowa amidst the flowering of silk-cotton trees, the boat safari across the Brahmaputra, or promoting specialised birding trails, the overall aim has been to focus on wellness and outdoor tourism. "Hope Prayers For Peace Will Be Answered": Farooq Abdullah Visits Vaishno Devi
Jammu/Srinagar: National Conference president Farooq Abdullah on Wednesday returned to Srinagar by the recently launched Vande Bharat Express after an overnight stay at the Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra. "Had a great darshan and I am hopeful that all our prayers for peace, progress and brotherhood at the shrine will be answered so that we can move forward and our country also marches ahead and we become part of its development trajectory," the former chief minister told reporters on his return. The 87-year-old Abdullah took his maiden ride in the Vande Bharat Express, which connects Kashmir to the rest of the country, to reach Katra on Tuesday. He stayed at the sanctum sanctorum overnight and took part in special prayers at the shrine. He was accompanied by his grandsons Zamir and Zahid, Jammu and Kashmir minister Satish Sharma, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's advisor Nasir Aslam Wani and several NC legislators, including chief spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq. Asked about his overnight stay at the shrine, Abdullah said, "I felt very happy." "I came here by train and this service is a new beginning for us. This will not only benefit the pilgrims coming to visit Mata but also prove beneficial for the pilgrims intending to visit the Amarnath cave shrine and they will also come in large numbers. This will benefit tourism in J&K," he added. Mr Abdullah said this train is a blessing for Jammu and Kashmir which will boost trade and tourism. "The journey was very good. You can see that tourists are also coming. This train is a blessing. It will increase tourism and trade. Our fruits can go outside easily and our people can now travel to any part of India comfortably. "This was a dream which I have seen become a reality in my life," the former chief minister told reporters at the Srinagar railway station. #WATCH | After darshan of Maa Vaishno Devi, former CM Farooq Abdullah reached Srinagar on the Vande Bharat train from Katra, he says, "I had a wonderful journey. "We had darshan thrice after reaching this holy town (Katra), which is a great blessing for us... Abdullah walked two to three kilometres to reach the court and we prayed for J&K to get back its lost glory. J&K is India's crown and we want to reach that height again," he said. The minister said they prayed for India's progress at the global level. Mr Sharma described the trip as "historic" and said they will remember it for eternity. He said they also prayed for the victims of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and shelling by Pakistan. "They (Pakistanis) will never succeed in their nefarious designs. Terrorism is an industry but our brave forces gave them a befitting reply. They will meet the same fate in future if they try to do any mischief," the minister said. NC provincial president Rattan Lal Gupta said Abdullah's visit has sent a positive message across the country and "we are hopeful that the tourism industry, which has suffered a major setback in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack, will be back on track soon". "Abdullah's overnight stay at the shrine saw an immediate increase in the footfall of pilgrims. We are hopeful that this momentum will further increase in the coming days," he said. Gupta said the team attended all the special prayers and all its members, except Abdullah, also visited Bhairon Ghati to offer prayers.

Srinagar Vande Bharat Express receives good public response, booking full for next 10 days: Railway Authority
Katra (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], June 11 (ANI): The Vande Bharat Express operating on the newly launched Katra-Srinagar route is witnessing overwhelming demand from passengers, with bookings full for the next 10 days, according to railway authorities. Speaking to the ANI, Station Superintendent at Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station, Jugal Kishor Sharma, said the response to the train has far exceeded expectations. 'We are receiving a very good response from the public for the Vande Bharat Express, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. People are very excited, and there are no seats available for the next 10 days,' Sharma said. Sharma attributed the strong enthusiasm to the train's state-of-the-art facilities and the significance of the route, which connects important religious and tourist destinations. 'It's a new route, and there is great enthusiasm among the public to travel on it -- that's why there's a long waiting list for seats,' he added. He also assured that railway staff are working diligently to ensure a smooth travel experience. 'We are making sure that there are no discomfort or complaints from the passengers. The railway staff is also making all necessary efforts to facilitate the passengers,' Sharma said. The train, which is part of the Indian Railways' push for faster and more comfortable travel options, aims to boost connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly for pilgrims visiting the revered Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra and tourists headed to the Kashmir Valley. The Vande Bharat Express has been equipped with modern features, including faster acceleration, comfortable seating, and enhanced safety protocols, further contributing to its popularity among passengers. Earlier on Tuesday, National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah took a ride in the newly flagged off Vande Bharat train from Srinagar to Katra. The NC Chief said that the Vande Bharat trains on the USBRL route (Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link) are the 'biggest gift' for the people of Jammu and Kashmir as it connects the territory with the entire country. Speaking to reporters, the NC chief said that his eyes became 'teary' after the train crossed the Chenab Bridge. Jammu and Kashmir Minister Satish Sharma also accompanied NC Chief in the ride and termed it a 'historic moment', saying that the long-pending demand of the people of Jammu and Kashmir has been fulfilled now. Highlighting the importance of this train, the Minister said that it will help to break the monopoly of airlines, offering the public more accessible and affordable travel options. Notably, the bridge on the River Chenab, being the highest bridge in the world, is a milestone project for the Indian Railways, which was completed after several ups and downs in a difficult terrain. It connects Kashmir to Jammu and the entire country via rail. The two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station, directly connecting the Jammu division with Kashmir, were flagged off by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 6. The new Vande Bharat Express train will take just about three hours to travel between Katra and Srinagar, reducing the existing travel time by two to three hours. These trains have been specially designed to operate in the cold climatic conditions of the Kashmir Valley. The train will run through the Anji Khad Bridge, which is India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, and the Chenab Bridge, which is the highest railway arch bridge in the world. The USBRL project is 272 kilometres long, constructed worth around Rs 43,780 crore, includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges. The project establishes all-weather, seamless rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country, aiming to transform regional mobility and drive socio-economic integration.
