Benilde coach Arnold Laniog rues injuries, inexperience in Blazers' Final Four breakdown
NCAA By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde head coach Arnold Laniog said injuries and inexperience came back to haunt them in the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball Final Four round. The top-seeded Blazers took two shocking tumbles in the semifinals, falling twice to fourth seed Colegio de San Juan de Letran to bow out of contention despite holding a twice-to-beat advantage over the Knights. The Taft crew had to play through a depleted roster after team captain Arnel Aguilar and main opposite spiker Jacob Herrera were both forced to play on limited minutes due to injuries they sustained even prior to the semifinals round. Laniog shared Aguilar is nursing a shoulder injury he got in the final stretch of the first round while the lefty Herrera tore his patellar tendon during the start of the tournament. With these, Laniog decided to convert Aguilar to a libero, including in their do-or-die Game 2 against the Knights just to put his presence on the court while Herrera saw minimal playing time. But Laniog isn't offering any excuses, stressing the Knights played like a legit title contender behind veterans Vince Himzon and Bembem Bautista. After losing Game 1, Benilde still had a chance to clinch a finals berth as they dominated Letran in Set 1 of the sudden death, but they failed to find the finishing touches as the Knights staged a come-from-behind victory to enter the championship round for the first time in 16 years. "That's the turning point eh, nu'ng natalo kami sa second set. We have a chance nu'ng second set nu'ng nag-25-all after ng challenge namin pero hindi na-capitalize," Laniog added. "Sabi ko nga kung nakuha namin 'yun, big difference sa third set pero sa third set biglang bumagsak. Lumalabas na 'yung grupo namin ay mas bata, kulang sa experience." Despite the Final Four exit, all is not lost for Benilde as the Blazers now shift their focus on the battle for third against Mapua University in their bid to make the podium. "'Yun na lang, sabi nga namin we must accept ang nangyari na talagang talo tayo. Hindi tayo nag-perform doon sa kagustuhan natin so let's move on para doon sa battle for third." —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Witness to Arellano's rise, Adi Villados says Chiefs' finals return is bigger than himself
NCAA By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News From the Arellano University Chiefs' tough losses to their slow climb back to relevance, Adi Villados has been through it all. And seeing the school reach the finals again after seven years makes the veteran setter proud and honored at the same time. However, the graduating Villados, a true homegrown product of Arellano, stressed the feat isn't his alone. "Itong pagtungtong namin sa finals ay hindi lang para sa akin, para din sa mga teammates ko na maiiwan. Boost din sa kanila na kaya nilang mag-finals at kaya nilang gawin 'yung ginawa namin ngayon," Villados told GMA News Online on Friday. The 5-foot-11 playmaker has been with the school since 2018, back when he was still suiting up for the juniors teams during his Grade 11 and 12 years under coaches Obet Javier and Sherwin Meneses. He then stayed in Legarda and joined the Chiefs for college. Now, he has emerged as the pillar of the squad in their first finals appearance since Season 93, ousting second-seeded Mapua University in the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball Final Four. Before this feat, the Chiefs have fallen short too many times in the past. In their last finals trip in Season 93 in 2018, Arellano fell to powerhouse University of Perpetual Help System DALTA in the finals. They then made the Final Four again the following year, but bowed to Emilio Aguinaldo College in the first round of Season 94 stepladder semifinals. In Seasons 98 and 99, Arellano would fall short anew after absorbing losses to San Beda University and Colegio de San Juan de Letran, respectively, in the stepladder round. "Sobrang saya and sobrang honored kasi last year [ko na], meron akong iiwan sa school na ito nakapasok kami sa finals," he added. "Masaya kasi lagi po kaming nalalaglag sa semis and ayon ma-achieve na namin kung ano 'yung gusto namin." —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Arellano sweeps Mapua, sets up finals duel vs Letran in NCAA men's volleyball
NCAA Arellano University swept Mapua University, 25-20, 25-15, 25-15, in the do-or-die match of the NCAA Season 100 men's volleyball Final Four on Friday to advance to the finals. The Chiefs are returning to the finals after seven years and will face Colegio de San Juan de Letran for the title. Arellano also erased a twice-to-beat disadvantage against no. 2 team Mapua. The Chiefs led 7-4 in the third set before they made a 11-3 run to claim an 18-7 lead. Eventually, Arellano led 23-9 before Mapua made a 5-0 run and tried to trim the deficit. Penny Curamen then put Arellano at match point before Adi Villados' attack went out in the following rally as Mapua salvaged one. Jayvee Valenzuela's service error, however, handed the victory to Arellano. "Pinag-usapan namin na one point at a time lang, kung ano ang usual na ginagawa namin sa training, gawin lang namin," Arellano head coach Bryan Vitug said. AC Guinto led Arellano with 15 points, while Penny Curamen added 12 points. Jiwen Sinuto and Carl Berdal had nine points each, while Villados stood out as he made 20 out of Arellano's 20 excellent sets. Arjay Ramos was the only double-digit scorer for Mapua with 10 points, with Barbie San Andres limited to just six points. Mapua will face Benilde in the battle for third. Game 1 of the best-of-three finals between Arellano and Letran will be played on Sunday. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
