Kerala aims to become Carbon neutral by 2050: CM
'Thiruvananthapuram has become the first city in Kerala to implement a Green Budget. The budget outlines activities in the city aimed at limiting carbon emissions, serving as a model for other local bodies,' the CM said.
He was speaking after inaugurating the seed ball manufacturing project implemented by the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation and launching the Green Budget 2025 at Putharikandam Maidan yesterday.
The Chief Minister said discussions on climate change and natural disasters are taking place across the world. However, there is still no global consensus on combating climate change.
'Even at the UN Climate Change Conference, no clear guidelines were formulated. Instead of waiting for such global agreements, we are moving ahead with our own actions,' he added.
He stated that incentives are being provided for electric vehicles, along with the promotion of green hydrogen hubs and renewable energy sources.
The Corporation's work to make Thiruvananthapuram a solar city is commendable. As part of this, solar panels are being installed on government office buildings at a cost of ₹125 crore. Electric buses are being purchased, and the Corporation has procured and distributed 100 electric autorickshaws. Such initiatives will help Thiruvananthapuram become one of the fastest-developing cities, he said.
The seed ball campaign had planned to involve 6,000 students, but an additional 1,000 students joined. The seed balls they prepared will be planted in office premises and barren lands under the 'Green Trivandrum' concept.
By depositing four lakh seed balls across various parts of the city, large-scale tree growth can be encouraged. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that such activities to tackle environmental challenges would also help create significant eco-friendly awareness.

Salem has the highest number of beneficiaries under CM's Thayumanavar Scheme, says Minister
Tourism Minister R. Rajendran on Tuesday (August 12, 2025) said that in Tamil Nadu, Salem district has the highest number of beneficiaries under the Chief Minister's Thayumanavar scheme. On Tuesday, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin launched the Thayumanavar scheme to distribute ration items, including rice and sugar, to the homes of the elderly and differently-abled family card holders aged above 70 years. In Salem district, Tourism Minister R. Rajendran visited their homes that come under the Karuppur Primary Agricultural Cooperative Credit Society fair price shop and distributed the essential items. Speaking to the reporters, Mr. Rajendran said that under the scheme across Tamil Nadu, 20.42 lakh people aged over 70 years, totalling up to 15.81 lakh ration cards will be benefitted via 34,809 fair price shops. Likewise, 1.27 lakh differently-abled linked with 91,969 ration shops will be benefitted. In total, 21.70 lakh will be benefitted in the State by receiving essential ration items at their homes. In Salem, there are 1,743 functioning fair price shops, including 1,265 full-time and 478 part-time shops. Through these shops, 92,988 ration card holders will be benefitted in the district . Salem got the first place in the State with the highest beneficiaries under the scheme, the Minister added. Stating that staffs from the fair price shop will go to the homes of eligible beneficiaries with electronic weighing machine, including e-PoS machines, and distribute ration items, the Minister said that on every second Saturday and Sunday the beneficiaries will receive the essential items. In Salem, the scheme will be divided into 1,489 groups and the ration items will be distributed through one vehicle for every 70 family cards in the Corporation and in municipalities. In hill areas, one vehicle will cover 50 ration card holders and in rural areas, one vehicle will cover 60 ration card holders and distribute accordingly, Mr. Rajendran added. District Collector R. Brindha Devi and officials from departments concerned also participated.

DPIIT and Zepto signs MoU to foster manufacturing ecosystem
New Delhi, Aug 12 (UNI) The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has signed an MoU with Zepto Pvt Ltd with an objective to assist early-stage startups in the manufacturing sector with the help of the 'Zepto Nova' innovation challenge. Addressing a ceremony, Sanjiv, joint secretary, DPIIT, stressed the support from unicorns for driving India's startup growth. He said it was the responsibility of unicorns to contribute to the startup ecosystem. This partnership focuses on training startups under the six-month programme by mentoring them on advanced technologies, including hardware, IoT packaging, and sustainable manufacturing. Moreover, the collaboration also allows conducting the expert-led workshops on focusing on women-led and Tier II/III startups. Zepto will also integrate about 100 Indian startups into its supply chain to expand its presence. Zepto co-founder Kaivalya Vohra said the partnership would support the future of manufacturing. Waterlogging: Canal rejuvenation project in Kochi to be completed in two years
KOCHI: The Rs 3,716.10-crore canal rejuvenation project aimed at transforming Kochi's neglected canals into navigable corridors, and finding a lasting solution to the perennial waterlogging issue, is aimed to be completed in two years. One of the first key works, the construction of Bund Road bridge across Chilavanoor canal spending Rs 39 crore, is expected to be completed by December this year itself. 'Kochi will become one of the best cities in the modern era upon completion of the biggest project sanctioned by the state government. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the project implementation soon,' Industries Minister P Rajeeve said, while inaugurating an awareness programme and workshop on the Integrated Urban Regeneration and Water Transport System project, jointly organised by KMRL and KWA at the Town Hall. While seeking the co-operation of one and all, minister Rajeeve stated that the project will fundamentally change the nature of the canals by increasing water flow and ensuring cleanliness. Beyond environmental benefits, the initiative will pave the way for a new water transport system and the development of footpaths and recreational facilities along the banks. 'The canal banks will become a part of people's lives,' he said. A minimum of 2 m width on either side of the canals will be acquired and developed into walkways. The entire canal stretch will come under CCTV surveillance to track unlawful activities. A total of 56 road bridges and 46 foot bridges will be constructed. Mayor M Anilkumar likened the project's potential impact to that of the internationally acclaimed Water Metro. The Mayor hinted that the project would not only address persistent issues like waterlogging and mosquito infestation but also significantly contribute to the growth of tourism in the region. He stressed that a collaborative effort from elected representatives is key to successfully completing the massive project. 'Priority will be given to the development of Market Canal (Rs 38 crore). We aim to start the dredging of Chilavanoor canal (Rs 8 crore) too in a few days ...The beautification of Bund Road too will be carried out soon.., The Edappally Canal will be made fully navigable,' the Mayor said.
