MobLand – Season 1 Episode 9 'Beggar's Banquet' Recap & Review
Beggar's Banquet
Episode 9 of Mobland starts with Eddie waking up to find Conrad lurking in his room. He wants to have a chat but we don't see the full context of this until later in the chapter. One thing's for sure though – it's not good news. Off the back of this, Eddie ignores Jan in the kitchen and heads outside with a coffee, asking the dog who's better off here. This is, of course, a metaphor for his own life where he feels trapped in a cage and used as a pet for the Harrigans.
Elsewhere, Kevin has gone AWOL, determined to get revenge on Rigby for the abuse he suffered back in prison. He plays the role of a taxi driver, taking the guy back home. Kevin manages to work his way into Rigby's house, and eventually confronts him about the abuse.
Rigby has had bad memory loss over the years and anything beyond 5 years back is a bit hazy. That doesn't really help Kevin get closure, who has been haunted by this abuse all season long. Rigby does apologize, after questioning if he actually imagined the whole thing, and tells him that he's found Jesus.
This is enough for Kevin to get his gun out and, after breaking down crying, shoots the guy in the head.
Conrad works with Harry to try and sort out an alliance with Jaime. Conrad is a bit of a loose cannon and jokes about putting a tommy gun in the bathroom before the meet, and it's hard to know if the guy is joking or not. Apparently he is, but either way, this doesn't look like it's going to be a particularly pleasant meet.
First impressions are not great either. Seraphina is here to try and smooth things over and gets down to business in order to make a deal. Jaime has his own reasons for being here. He speaks plainly to Harry, ignoring Conrad completely here, and brings up how the earlier favour was for Kat, not for him.
Conrad gives him four hours to come to a decision, but Jaime simply looks over at Harry and tells him he can understand why he wants to leave the Harrigans. This gets right under Conrad's skin back home, which isn't helped when Maeve questions him about Alice coming to dinner, warning him off doing anything silly.
Alice though is actually buzzing given her undercover escapades. After the murder of those two officers last time out, Colin is now in charge of the case and he recognizes this excitement in Alice. He speaks to her plainly about how she's a risk-taker like him, and encourages her to try and plant evidence at the Harrigan house in exchange for securing a big promotion and a nice payday.
Back at the estate, Maeve speaks to Gina and demands she leave Eddie alone. She threatens her badly, scathingly growling that she'll eat her eyeballs, and scares Gina into running away.
Bella meets with Antoine and organizes traffic here with the Home Secretary. As the group begin talking, we can see that Antoine is wearing a camera on his tie.
Something big is about to go down and it actually comes from this dinner at the Harrigan estate. Colin has bugged Alice's phone and speaks to Richie about the current plan, including a tactical team nearby ready to swoop in as soon as Alice has planted the evidence. Richie agrees that Harry is unhappy and it seems like he's not going to get caught in the crossfire here, which is at least something.
Jaime agrees to the Harrigan deal but only after confirmation that Harry has got the rat out the house. Harry knows who this is and works to resolve the situation before it gets messy. He also has to meet Kat the following day at 5pm too in order to make good on his favour.
The dinner goes ahead that night, minus Gina who's 'not feeling well'. Maeve is a complete loose cannon and speaks about the 'fragility' of marriage, likening it to an egg. It's also worth noting that she grabs Eddie's thigh here, who looks very uncomfortable.
As for Seraphina, she gets right to the crux of the issue. She questions Alice's motives, and why she's not feeling a bit scared, given where she is, but it's Maeve who forces Alice's uncomfortableness to flyoff the Richter scale and leave the table. Then, everything kicks off.
Conrad questions Maeve and things get hostile between them, while Harry slips away and catches up to Alice, who's busy bagging up 'evidence' to plant across the house.
The façade slips here, as Alice knows the game is up. She reveals what's happening, and Harry lets her go. He doesn't tell Conrad either, as he and Maeve wind up at loggerheads… until the police show up.
Maeve and Conrad are both arrested, although they wind up singing as they're taken out, laughing all the while as they're bundled into police cars.
The Episode Review
So it looks like the time of the Harrigans is coming to an end and the final scenes really sum up the absolute chaos that both Maeve and Conrad have caused here. The pair deserve each other, and while they're not entirely evil personified, they're pretty close to being the devil's minions given their cold, calculated and sociopathic tendencies.
It's interesting that Harry decided to let Alice leave without much fuss either, especially as he's always been relatively loyal to Conrad. However, even he can see that the pair have been coming apart at the seams for a while.
While yes, Freddie was one of the moles, it would appear there could be another inside that house working alongside him. We'll have to wait and see if these charges actually stick for Conrad and Maeve though, leaving things wide open for the finale next week.

Step By Step star Christine Lakin, 46, rose to fame as a child actress in the '90s... see her now
Christine Lakin has come a long way since breaking out in Hollywood in the early 1990s. The actress, now 46, got her big break as a main cast member on the sitcom Step By Step, which she starred on for 160 episodes over seven seasons. She played Alicia 'Al' Lambert, the daughter of Patrick Duffy's character Frank, who is getting used to his new marriage to Suzanne Somers ' character Carol. Although critics never paid much attention to Step By Step, it was popular with viewers for several seasons, though ratings began to flag by the show's sixth season. For its seventh and final season, it moved from ABC to CBS, though that turmoil only exacerbated the exodus of viewers, and the show was canceled for good in June 1998. Now, more than two decades after the show that gave her her big break went off the air, takes a look at what Christine looks like now. The film and television actress was spotted out in Los Angeles this week when she attended her son Baylor's Little League game. Christine was dressed in a sporty white tank top that highlighted her toned arms, and she paired it with acid wash jeans and brown Birkenstock sandals. She opted for minimal makeup and covered up with aviator sunglasses and a blue denim-style LA Dodgers baseball cap. Christine carried a bag with her son's equipment, including his baseball bat, and she also brought along a fan for the sweltering late-spring day. Despite being decades away from the role she's best known for, she still looked shockingly youthful. In 2014, she tied the knot with the actor Brandon Breault. In 2016, they welcomed their first child, daughter Georgia James, nine, and in late 2018 she gave birth to their son Baylor B., six. Christine managed to make a successful transition from being a child star to an adult actor after her first series ended, and even though she's never appeared in any film or show as successful as Step By Step, she has continued to be a prolific actor and has even expanded into directing in recent years. After wrapping on Step By Step, Christine — who described herself as a 'recovering child actor' in an interview with Voyage LA last year, became an in-demand guest star on shows including 7th Heaven, 3rd Rock From The Sun and the Touched By An Angel spinoff Promised Land. Christine was dressed in a sporty white tank top that highlighted her toned arms, and she paired it with acid wash jeans, brown Birkenstocks, aviator sunglasses and a blue denim-style LA Dodgers baseball cap. She opted for minimal makeup As the 2000s rolled around, she appeared in episodes of Boston Public, the original Touched By An Angel series, the cult teen mystery-drama Veronica Mars, CSI and Bones. Her next series to get picked up was the CW's Valentine in 2008, but the series only lasted eight episodes. Although she mostly appeared in low-budget films throughout the 2000s, she had a surprising connection to Paris Hilton's attempt to launch an acting career when she starred opposite the heiress in The Hottie And The Nottie (as the Nottie). It took extreme makeup and prosthetics to cover up Christine's natural beauty, though she eventually gets to show off her real visage after a 'makeover.' The film was panned by critics and earned the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress for Paris, as well as three other Razzies. The Hottie And The Nottie was also a failure at the box office, grossing only $1.6 million against a relatively modest budget of $9 million. She rounded out the decade with roles in Disney's Race To Witch Mountain — which starred Dwayne Johnson, AnnaSophia Robb, Carla Gugino and Ciarán Hinds — and the all-star ensemble romantic comedy Valentine's Day. A year later, she reunited with director Garry Marshall for a small part in his follow-up ensemble rom-com, New Year's Eve. As the 2010s started up, Christine began a successful run as the voice of Joyce Kinney, as well as multiple miscellaneous characters, on the long-running animated series Family Guy. She continued guest starring on shows like NCIS, CSI: NY and Modern Family, and she had multi-episode runs on Melissa & Joey and the Cartoon Network series Clarence. Her film work in the 2010s was less prolific, but she again played a small part for Marshall in his rom-com Mother's Day, which starred Jennifer Aniston, Julia Roberts, Kate Hudson and Jason Sudeikis, among many others, and she also returned to the Veronica Mars universe with a role in the sequel film from 2014. Christine has also established herself as a television director begin in 2012, and she got some of her most high-profile directing gigs beginning in 2018 on The Goldbergs. She went on to direct 12 episodes of the series through 2023, along with three episodes of its spinoff series Schooled. More recently, she helmed an episode of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. While speaking to Voyage LA last year, she explained her shift to working more behind the camera. 'I have always been interested in the production of television and the behind-the-scenes action that goes on with live and scripted production. Being a self-starter and creating my own lane with projects was something born out of necessity in a competitive town like Hollywood, but also appealed to my creative brain to constantly try things and bring folks together to create something fun and unique. She added that 'saying yes to opportunities that sometimes scared me, that didn't always seem like a linear path to where I thought I wanted to go' had helped her in the past and motivated her to give directing a try. However, she found road blocks along the way since she hadn't been trained extensively as a director before trying her hand at it. 'It's hard to be competitive for that first big job when you've had no experience at that level before,' she explained. 'The feedback can feel like a Catch-22: You desperately want to prove you can do it, but folks have a hard time taking a chance on someone new.' In the same interview, she noted that being a child actor had been a far different experience for her than it has been for other stars, both those who found success later and those who left Hollywood. 'I had the most fun working as a child and surrounded by wonderful people,' Christine admitted. 'I love the fans that still approach me today and those who are now watching Step By Step again with their kids. There's a nostalgia that, as a fan of that time, I can completely appreciate.'

Love Island USA cast member breaks silence after being kicked off show due for racist slurs
Axed Love Island USA contestant Yulissa Escobar has broken her silence after being removed from the show over her past use of racist slurs. Escobar, 27, was released from the reality TV show off camera during only the second episode, before the rest of the contestants woke up for the day. Clips of her using the N-word while discussing ex-boyfriends surfaced on Reddit and fans were irate, commenting on her Instagram that they would vote her off at the first opportunity. Now Escobar has taken to Instagram to apologize for using the slurs in a post captioned: 'Owning my mistakes, speaking my truth.' She wrote: 'First, I want to apologize for using a word I had no right in using. Podcast clips from years ago have recently resurfaced, and I want to address it directly. 'In those clips, I used a word I never should've used, a racial slur. I used it ignorantly, not fully understanding the weight, history, or pain behind it. I wasn't trying to be offensive or harmful, but I recognize now that intention doesn't excuse impact. And the impact of that word is real. It's tied to generations of trauma, and it is not mine to use. 'At the time, I was speaking casually in conversation, not thinking deeply or critically about what I was saying. But that doesn't take away from how wrong it was. The truth is, I didn't know better then, but I do now. I've taken the time to reflect, to learn, and to grow from that moment. 'I've changed a lot since then, not just in how I speak, but in how I show up, how I carry myself, and how I honor the experiences of others. Growth means recognizing when you were wrong, even if it's uncomfortable, and choosing to move forward with humility and accountability. 'There have also been fake statements circulating, things written or said by others that don't reflect me or my heart. I want to clarify that this is my voice and my words. I don't need anyone to speak for me. I'm choosing to speak for myself because I take full ownership of my actions. Do not listen to the fake statements. This is my official statement. This is me, speaking directly to you.' 'To those who are disappointed or offended, I understand and I apologize. I am sorry. As the islanders were waking up, the narrator of the show Iain Stirling announced: "Yulissa has left the villa."' Yulissa was paired up with Ace Greene who is now single following her exit. One comment on the Reddit thread pointed out: 'How [the f***] did producers let this slide? They for SURE saw this.' Another user replied: 'Yeah, if people on this sub can find this in a few days, casting should have DEFINITELY found this. So either they're not looking into people enough or they're choosing to let this stuff slide. Not sure which is worse.' The remaining season seven Islanders include: Chelley Bissainthe, Huda Mustafa, Belle-A Walker, Olandria Carthen, Greene, and Taylor Williams. The comments on Yulissa's Instagram will be a surprise to her when she gets back from Fiji. ''Yulissa has left the villa' LMFAOOOO,' one fan wrote, while another expressed,' WE WON SHES GONE!' The strong reaction continued in that theme, with someone else saying: 'Love Island stood on business and I love that.' Just a day before her exit, the budding reality star had been happily promoting the show on her Instagram. In one post, she wrote: 'It's my unapologetic year! And I'm choosing me, every time. Loud, soft, sweet, savage - whatever I feel like being.' In other Love Island-related posts, Yulissa shilled for votes to stay in the Villa.
