BAT's arm acquired, Accenture now a partner: SYS expands global BPO reach

KARACHI: Pakistan's leading software exporter Systems Limited (SYS), has taken a bold leap to expand its global footprint in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) sector by acquiring British American Tobacco SAA Services (Pvt) Ltd and forging a new partnership with global consulting giant Accenture (UK) Limited.
The acquisition, announced on Wednesday, involves purchasing the BPO arm from British American Tobacco International Holdings (UK) Limited. The Target Company offers IT-led shared services spanning omni-channel customer support, marketing operations, HR, finance, procurement, and supply chain management — across multiple geographies.
SYS's UAE-based associate, Techvista Systems FZ LLC, will now deliver AI-powered shared services under a multi-year Master Services Agreement with Accenture, positioning the acquired company as a sub-contractor in a strategic delivery role.
Industry analysts have welcomed the move. Muhammad Sohail of Topline Securities described it as 'perfectly aligned with SYS's BPO strategy,' adding that the acquisition marks a bold step to expand its global footprint and strengthen its digital services business.
The Share Purchase Agreement was finalized on July 29, 2025, with the deal subject to standard regulatory approvals and closing conditions.
In parallel, Techvista secured its own long-term outsourcing contract with Accenture, dated July 29. Industry insiders suggest that BAT has globally outsourced its service centers to Accenture, making Systems' subcontracting role a key gateway for accessing broader BPO opportunities from both BAT and Accenture.
This development builds on British American Tobacco (BAT) Pakistan's previous efforts to establish a strong BPO presence in the country. Relocated from Malaysia to Pakistan in 2021, BAT's outsourcing hub had by 2024 created over 500 jobs and employed 350 professionals, delivering services to over 50 countries including Japan, UAE, and Malaysia. The operation reportedly generated $11.8 million in annual foreign exchange inflows, with revenue per employee ranging between $35,000 and $45,000.
Topline Research's Sania Irfan sees long-term upside, noting that Accenture—whose global revenue exceeds $64 billion—is heavily invested in BPO services as part of its digital transformation offerings.
The transaction is seen as a significant milestone for Pakistan's tech sector, further integrating it into global value chains through strategic partnerships and digital service expansion.

Indian jeweller Titan eyes shifting some manufacturing to Gulf as US trade tensions escalate

DUBAI: India's biggest jeweller and watchmaker Titan is exploring shifting some manufacturing to the Middle East Gulf to maintain low-tariff access to U.S. markets amid trade tensions between Washington and New Delhi, Managing Director C.K. Venkataraman said on Tuesday. Titan, part of the Tata Group conglomerate, announced this month plans to acquire a majority stake in Dubai-based luxury retailer Damas, which operates 146 stores across the Gulf. In light of the deal, valued at $283 million, Venkataraman told Reuters the region is being considered 'as a manufacturing base to export to the U.S.' His comments reflect how global companies may seek new routes to navigate trade barriers, as the U.S. levies or threatens tariffs on international trade partners. Last month, U.S. President Donald Trump slapped a surprise 25% tariff on imports from India and threatened further hikes this week over India's purchases of Russian oil. In contrast, the United Arab Emirates faces a 10% tariff under Trump's baseline rate. Indian jeweller Titan to buy large stake in Dubai's Damas Titan's Tanishq brand has several U.S. stores and is planning a major expansion, while its diamond-focused label CaratLane launched in the U.S. in October, the company said. Titan began talks to buy Damas in 2024, before U.S. trade policy shifts came into focus. Shifting some manufacturing to a Gulf Cooperation Council country would be a way to mitigate recent rises in U.S. tariffs, Venkataraman said in a video call with Reuters. The U.S. is a less feasible manufacturing base due to cost and skills constraints, especially for artisan-made jewellery, he said. 'If the tariffs remain like what they are currently threatened to be, then any arbitrage on a tariff … any significant arbitrage would be meaningful for us to consider,' Venkataraman said.

India accuses EU, US of double standard over Russian trade

NEW DELHI: India has sharply criticised the United States and the European Union, saying it is being unfairly singled out by them over its Russian oil purchases when they both trade extensively with Moscow despite the war in Ukraine. India's criticism followed a renewed threat by U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday to raise tariffs on goods from India over its Russian oil purchases, deepening the trade rift between the two countries. In a rare show of unity, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the main opposition Congress on Tuesday condemned Trump's repeated criticism of New Delhi. India's Foreign Ministry said in a statement issued late on Monday that 'it is revealing that the very nations criticizing India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia'. 'It is unjustified to single out India,' the ministry said. It said the EU conducted 67.5 billion euros ($78.02 billion) in trade with Russia in 2024, including record imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) reaching 16.5 million metric tons. The United States, the statement said, continues to import Russian uranium hexafluoride for use in its nuclear power industry, palladium, fertilisers and chemicals. It did not give a source for the export information. Kremlin slams Trump's threat to hike tariffs on India over Russian oil purchases The U.S. embassy and the EU's delegation in New Delhi did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Both the United States and EU have sharply scaled back their trade ties with Russia since it launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In 2021, Russia was the EU's fifth-largest trading partner, with goods exchange worth 258 billion euros, according to the EU executive European Commission. Sudden rift The sudden rift between India and the U.S. has been deepening since July 31, when Trump announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods being shipped to the U.S. and for the first time threatened unspecified penalties for buying Russian oil. India is one of the biggest buyers of crude from Russia, importing about 1.75 million barrels per day from January to June this year, up 1% from a year ago. Indian refiner Nayara Energy, a major buyer of Russian oil which is majority owned by Russian entities including oil major Rosneft, was subjected to European Union sanctions targeting Russia's oil and energy industry in July. Trump says will 'substantially' raise tariffs on goods from India over Russian oil purchases India has said it does not support 'unilateral sanctions' by the EU. Trade experts say Trump's tariff could badly hurt India's economy. Ajay Srivastava of the New Delhi-based Global Trade Research Initiative said he expected Indian goods exports to the U.S. to fall 30% in the current fiscal year ending March 31, to $60.6 billion from $86.5 billion in the 2025 fiscal year. India's equity benchmarks fell after Trump's renewed threat of harsh tariffs on goods from India. Manish Tewari, a member of parliament and Congress leader, said Trump's 'disparaging remarks hurt the dignity and self-respect of Indians'. 'The time has come to call out this constant bullying and hectoring,' he added. BJP Vice President Baijayant Jay Panda quoted Henry Kissinger - the most powerful U.S. diplomat of the Cold War era - in a post on X: 'To be an enemy of America can be dangerous, but to be a friend is fatal.'

Abu Dhabi's MGX could raise up to $25bn for AI fund, Bloomberg News says

Abu Dhabi-based MGX is considering plans to raise as much as $25 billion in third-party capital as the investment group looks to ramp up its artificial intelligence holdings, Bloomberg News reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar with the matter. MGX declined to comment on the report and Reuters could not immediately verify it. Company executives are weighing raising money from financial and strategic investors in Abu Dhabi and beyond, but Mubadala Investment Co and AI firm G42 will remain MGX's main backers, the report said. UAE and US agree on path for Abu Dhabi to buy most advanced AI chips, Trump says No final decisions have been made, according to the report. MGX, which has invested in OpenAI and Elon Musk's xAI, is chaired by Sheikh Tahnoon bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE's national security adviser and a brother of UAE President Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed. The Financial Times reported last week that French AI startup Mistral is in talks with MGX and other investors to raise $1 billion at a valuation of $10 billion.
