Gilas Youth beats Vietnam by 51 to open FIBA U16 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers

Gilas Pilipinas Youth kicked off its campaign at the FIBA U16 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers in a sizzling fashion, thrashing Vietnam with a 113-62 win on Saturday at the Bren Z. Guiao Sports Complex in Pampanga.
Travis Pascual and Jolo Pascual led the onslaught as the Filipinos cruised to a 1-0 start while the visiting Vietnamese squad fell to 0-1.
5-foot-9 Travis Pascual sparked off the bench with 16 points together with four rebounds, four steals, and one assist while the 6-foot-1 Jolo Pascual chipped in 14 markers, three boards, four dimes, three steals, and one block.
Gilas turned a slim 29-20 first quarter lead to a sizable 61-33 cushion by halftime, thanks to a 32-point explosion led by the Pascual duo as they pulled away for good.
Prince Cariño was also an unstoppable force after finishing with a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds while Jhustin Hallare and Jhello Lumague chimed in with 10 markers apiece.
Hoang Minh Khang Nguyen paced Vietnam with 13 points while Le Cao Nguyen Nguyen and Khoa Aidan Vo added 12 and 10 markers respectively in the 51-point loss.
The LA Tenorio-helmed Gilas youth will target a hot 2-0 start when it takes on Thailand on Sunday.

The team then logged its biggest lead, 59-25, with 1:31 left in the third period after the Philippines made a 6-0 run from consecutive baskets from Andwele Cabañero, Jeremiah Antolin, Jr., and Jhustin Hallare. Indonesia still couldn't find the answer in the final frame as the Philippines eventually completed a sweep of the tournament. Hallare led the U16 squad with 13 points, four rebounds, and two assists, while Carl Gabriel de los Reyes had 11 points, 13 boards, and four assists. Ethan Tan-Chi added nine points, while Evaraigne Cruz added seven points. Gilas Pilipinas Youth completed a sweep of the FIBA U16 Asia Cup SEABA Qualifiers elimination round after a 96-61 win against Malaysia on Thursday at the Bren Z. Guiao Sports Complex in Pampanga. With the victory, the young squad went 5-0 ahead of the finals set on Friday. The nationals went hot from the get-go as they outscored Malaysia, 28-12. By halftime, the Philippines already had a 55-29 advantage. Malaysia tried to catch up in the third period as it trimmed the deficit to 22 with 4:02 left, but back-to-back baskets from Prince Cariño and Evaraigne Cruz handed the momentum anew to Batang Gilas. It was all Gilas then as they cruised to the victory. Jeremiah Antolin waxed hot from the field as he made seven of his nine attempts to register 15 points to go with four rebounds, while Travis Pascual added his own 15 points. Cruz chipped in 14 points, while Prince Cariño registered a double-double of 13 points and 11 boards. Cameron Jeremie Pagbe Tan had 16 points and seven boards to lead Malaysia which slipped to 2-3.
