Scottie Thompson proud of Davao's historic title in Palaro basketball

Davao Region has won its maiden title in the 2025 Palarong Pambansa secondary basketball and no one is prouder than former Davao athlete Scottie Thompson. Thompson, who bannered the Davao squad in 2010, said he is proud especially since his former teammate Jess Evangelio steered the team to the title. Thompson said the Palarong Pambansa in 2010 was a turning point in his career as he was discovered there by the University of Perpetual Help System DALTA. Doon ako na-scout so malaking bagay ang Palarong Pambansa," Thompson said, adding that the current crop of student-athletes are seen on bigger platforms. With Davao taking home the crown, is Thompson also looking to bring in some of the athletes from his hometown to Manila, particularly in Perpetual where he serves as team manager of the men's basketball team? "May kinakausap kami. Kung puwede lahat eh," he said in jest. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Obiena on Saturday ruled the men's pole vault event of the 2025 Asian Athletics Championships in Gumi, South Korea as he cleared 5.77 meters in the jump-off against China's Huang Bokai. This is Obiena's third straight gold in the Asian tourney after ruling it in 2019 in Dubai and 2023 in Bangkok. The jump-off happened as both pole vaulters cleared 5.72 meters in just one attempt, skipped 5.77, then failed in all three attempts of the 5.82 mark. It was Obiena who cleared the 5.77-meter mark in the jump-off, handing Huang the silver medal. Thailand's Patsapong Amsamarng copped the bronze with 5.67 meters. Obiena's compatriot Hokett Delos Santos, meanwhile, placed 13th as he cleared 4.97 meters. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
