Nine Nagaland district chambers of commerce to start indefinite shutdown from Monday

Dimapur, May 18 (PTI) The Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CNCCI) on Sunday announced that it will go ahead with voluntary indefinite business shutdown across nine districts of the state from Monday.
CNCCI is the apex body of 17 DCCIs of the state, of which nine are going on agitation.
Addressing a press conference in Dimapur on Sunday, CNCCI chairman Khekugha Muru stated that despite multiple efforts to engage the state government, including recent communications facilitated by Nagaland government spokesperson and minister K G Kenye, no concrete outcome or timeframe has been assured.
The CNCCI, therefore, has resolved to support the district chambers in moving forward with their collective decision to launch an indefinite shutdown.
The shutdown is an expression of the business community's growing frustration and will be conducted in a peaceful, voluntary, and democratic manner, he said.
The shutdown is not aimed at causing inconvenience to the public, but at drawing urgent attention to the unresolved issues, Muru said.
Maintaining that CNCCI is ready to withdraw the shutdown if the state government commits to a clear and time-bound plan for resolving the issues, he said, 'We want to make it clear: if the government provides a deadline, we are ready to reconsider and call off the indefinite shutdown immediately. Congress' media and publicity department head Pawan Khera said Gandhi's lawyer raised the issue of threat to his life in the court without his consent. "Mr Gandhi has strong objection to this and tomorrow his lawyer will take back this statement in court," Khera said in a post on X. He also shared a press release by the lawyer which said "the Pursis dated 13.08.2025 was filed by me in the Court without Instructions from the client". "The contents of the Pursis were drafted by me without consulting my client Shri. Rahul Gandhi. My client has taken strong exception to filing of this Pursis dated 13.08.2025 and has expressed his disagreement with the contents of the Pursis," Pawar said. "In light of the documented history of violent and anti-constitutional tendencies linked to the complainant's lineage, and considering the prevailing political climate, there exists a clear, reasonable, and substantial apprehension that Rahul Gandhi may face harm, wrongful implication, or other forms of targeting by persons subscribing to the ideology of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar," the application stated. "In such circumstances, preventive protection is not only prudent but is a constitutional obligation upon the state," it added. Advocate Pawar had said earlier this 'Pursis' or application was submitted as a precautionary measure with the objective of "legally safeguarding the fairness, integrity, and transparency of the present proceedings".

Delhi to pilot retrofit devices in 30 old govt vehicles to cut emissions
New Delhi, Aug 13 (PTI) The Delhi government will soon conduct trials by fitting catalytic converter-based retrofit emission control devices in up to 30 government-owned BS-IV and older heavy vehicles, potentially offering a cheaper and cleaner alternative to scrapping. In a first-of-its-kind move aimed at cutting toxic emissions from older diesel vehicles, the Delhi government decided to conduct a pilot project following a presentation by a clean-tech firm at a meeting which was chaired by the Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on August 11. The company claimed its retrofit technology could reduce particulate matter and other harmful emissions by more than 70 per cent. The trial comes in the wake of the Commission for Air Quality Management's (CAQM) directive banning the entry of non-BS-VI commercial goods vehicles into Delhi from November 1, with limited exemptions for essential services until October 31, 2026. Officials said while the order is crucial for reducing pollution, it poses challenges for owners of relatively newer vehicles that still have several years of service life left. 'Our goal is not just to comply with environmental directives but to lead the way in building a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Delhi. This pilot shows that with the right technology, determination and governance, we can solve even the toughest environmental challenges while protecting livelihoods," Sirsa said. 'This pilot is both a trial and a statement of our vision — to deploy permanent, innovative solutions that clean Delhi's air while keeping essential transport running," the minister said. According to the officials, the device, tested on Tata Cummins' 5.9 lakh engines and validated over 9,000 km — offers durability, low backpressure and regeneration capability. Company representatives said it could deliver over 95 per cent cost savings compared to purchasing new BS-VI vehicles, with minimal downtime for retrofitting. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) will lead the pilot, coordinating with departments such as PWD, MCD, DJB and Health to identify suitable vehicles. The firm will bear the cost of devices, installation and testing, with third-party validation from IIT Delhi or International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT). If proven effective, the solution could be recommended for large-scale adoption across Delhi and potentially in other states. The Supreme Court was dealing with a plea seeking a recall of its October 29, 2018, order upholding a National Green Tribunal's (NGT's) directive. The apex court had then directed the transport departments of states in NCR to ban diesel vehicles aged more than 10 years and petrol vehicles which are over 15 years old from plying on roads in terms of the NGT's order. The NGT, on the other hand, had ordered that all diesel or petrol vehicles that were more than 15 years old not be allowed to ply on roads and appropriate action, including their seizure, be taken under the Motor Vehicles Act in case of non-compliance. Last month, the Delhi government moved the top court against the blanket ban on diesel vehicles older than 10 years and petrol vehicles older than 15 years. According to the CAQM figures, there are 62 lakh end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) in Delhi, of which 41 lakh are two-wheelers. The issue of end-of-life vehicles resurfaced last month, as the Delhi government moved to implement a CAQM directive to refuse refuelling of such vehicles from July 1. Punjab CM flags off 500 women panchayat leaders for Maharashtra convention
Chandigarh, Aug 13 (PTI) Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday flagged off a train carrying a 500-member delegation of women sarpanches and panchs to Maharashtra for the national convention of women panchayats. Mann termed it a red-letter day, saying the delegation comprises representatives from high-performing panchayats and aims to enable them to gain new experiences through interactions with peers from other states. He said the visit will help the elected representatives ensure holistic development of their villages. Panchayats are pillars of democracy, directly managing schools, dispensaries, veterinary hospitals and other public welfare institutions in rural areas, the chief minister noted. Mann expressed hope the visit would boost the confidence of women representatives and help them gain new insights for development of villages. The government will also facilitate the delegation's visit to Takht Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded, he said, adding the initiative commemorates the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. The state will bear all boarding and lodging expenses, he added. Earlier, Mann paid obeisance at Gurdwara Sri Fatehgarh Sahib and vowed to follow the footsteps of Sikh Gurus and martyrs for the welfare of all sections of society. He recalled that the shrine is associated with the martyrdom of the 'chotte sahibzadas' — Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, the younger sons of Guru Gobind Singh — who were bricked alive along with their grandmother Mata Gujri by the Mughal governor of Sirhind. Their martyrdom had inspired Punjabis to fight against injustice, tyranny and oppression, since ages and the younger generations need to be made aware of this supreme sacrifice, so that they can also make selfless sacrifices for the country, Mann said.
