Four arrested for theft of finial of mausoleum at heritage site Sarkhej Roza
Unfortunately, only broken pieces of the sacred finial or `kalash', called 'Panjtan Pak', were recovered as the accused were planning to sell the metal pieces as scrap, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (crime) Ajit Rajian.
While four gang members were nabbed by the Ahmedabad crime branch from Mehsana district, four others were still at large, he said.
The Sarkhej Roza complex in Makarba area houses a shrine of Shaikh Ahmed Khattu Ganj Bakhsh, spiritual mentor of Ahmedabad's founder Sultan Ahmed Shah.
Built in 1451, this Indo-Islamic masterpiece has been protected by the Archaeological Survey of India since 1921, said DCP Rajian.
As per the complaint filed by the Sarkhej Roza committee on July 1, unidentified persons climbed the main dome of the mausoleum of Ganj Bakhsh during the previous night and stole the 150-year-old finial weighing nearly 6 kg.
The arrested men were identified as Suresh Dantani, Munna Dantani, Vishnu Dantani and Gopal Dantani, all residents of Mehsana.
The gang climbed the tomb using ropes and stole the finial hoping to sell it as scrap material, said a police release, adding that broken pieces of the artifact were recovered from the possession of the arrested persons.
The accused are habitual offenders named in several past cases of theft and other offences in Ahmedabad, Mehsana and Patan districts, said the release, adding that search is on for the other four gang members. PTI PJT KRK

400 kg hydroponic ganja recovered from womans luggage at Hyderabad airport
Hyderabad, Jul 30 (PTI) The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Wednesday recovered 400 kg of hydroponic ganja from the luggage of a woman passenger at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport here, an official release said. The value of the ganja is estimated to be Rs 40 crore, the release issued by the NCB said. Acting on intelligence outputs, NCB officials intercepted the woman passenger and seized 400 kg of the contraband from her two check-in bags, it said. Nimisha Priya case: Claims made by Kerala-based cleric incorrect; avoid speculation, say govt sources
Days after the Grand Mufti of India, Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musaliyar, claimed that Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya's death sentence in Yemen has been overturned, government sources said that the claims are incorrect, reported PTI on Wednesday. The government sources also advised that any speculation on this sensitive matter should be avoided. 'We have seen reports making claims regarding the case of Nimisha Priya. These are incorrect. We urge people to avoid misinformation and speculation on the sensitive matter," PTI quoted government sources as saying. The clarification came after the Grand Mufti reportedly said the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of External Affairs are aware of his efforts in the Priya case. On Monday, reports citing a statement from the office of Kanthapuram AP Abubakr Musliyar said the decision to completely cancel the death sentence was made during a high-level meeting held in Yemen's capital, Sanaa. LiveMint couldn't verify the Grand Mufti's statement. However, Indian officials handling the case have not confirmed the development so far. The 37-year-old Indian nurse from Kerala, Nimisha Priya, was scheduled to be executed on July 16, after she was convicted of killing a Yemeni national in June 2018, a decision that was upheld by the country's Supreme Judicial Council in November 2023. Originally scheduled to happen on July 16, her execution was halted temporarily just a day before that date. She was convicted of murdering her Yemeni business partner, Talal Abdo Mahdi, in 2017. She was sentenced to death in 2020, and her final appeal was rejected in 2023.
