ALTÉRRA backs Absolute Energy to develop renewable capacity in Italy
ALTÉRRA, the UAE's $30 billion climate investment vehicle, today announced a €50 million commitment via ALTÉRRA Acceleration Fund to Absolute Energy, an innovative Italian renewable energy platform.
The co-investment, made alongside global infrastructure investment manager, I Squared Capital, will help accelerate the development of an initial active pipeline of 1.4GW projects across Italy.
Absolute Energy focuses on the rapid development of multiple commercially viable small to medium-scale solar projects across Italy, leveraging the country's supportive regulatory environment - including accelerated permitting processes and guaranteed grid access. Through this initial buildout of 1.4GW of solar and battery storage capacity, along with a broader development pipeline of over 6GW, Absolute Energy is well positioned to become a next-generation Independent Power Producer (IPP) playing a key role in advancing Italy's decarbonization and energy independence goals.
ALTÉRRA estimates that this 1.4GW pipeline could eliminate up to 380,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions annually.
Italy has set a national target of adding 46GW of new solar capacity by 2030 to advance its net zero ambitions, address rising power demand, strengthen energy security, and reduce dependence on energy imports. Benefiting from favourable conditions such as high solar irradiation levels coupled with supportive policies, Italy represents a compelling market opportunity for advancing solar infrastructure at a pivotal moment in Europe's energy transition.
Majid Al Suwaidi, CEO of ALTÉRRA, commented: 'We are excited to support Absolute Energy as it enters its next phase of growth. With a strong pipeline and deep sector expertise, the company will help drive Italy's clean energy future. ALTERRA invests to accelerate the climate transition through innovative approaches and partnerships. In working with a global leader like I Squared Capital with their strong track record in platform building and investing in renewables, this investment further demonstrates how ALTERRA works with partners to invest at scale to accelerate impact across key markets.'
Sadek Wahba, Chairman and Managing Partner of I Squared Capital, said: 'We are proud to welcome ALTÉRRA as a strategic partner in Absolute Energy. Their investment underscores the strength of the platform and the scale of the opportunity in accelerating Italy's energy transition. ALTÉRRA brings deep climate focus and ambition, and we share their commitment to deploying capital with urgency and impact. This partnership is a powerful endorsement of Absolute Energy's innovative model and I Squared's long-standing approach to building transformational infrastructure businesses in critical sectors around the world.' -

Nasdaq Dubai welcomed leading Dubai-based bank Mashreq debut listing on the exchange with the admission of a $500 million sukuk issued by Mashreq Al Islami Sukuk Company. The Trust Certificates, due in 2030, were issued under Mashreq's $2.5 billion Trust Certificate Issuance Programme and are being admitted as a secondary listing following strong demand in the primary market. This marks an important milestone for Mashreq as it expands its access to international capital markets and strengthens its presence in the Islamic finance space. It also reflects Nasdaq Dubai's continued role in connecting regional issuers with a global investor base through a well-regulated and diversified platform. Senior officials from Mashreq, including Ahmed Abdelaal, Group Chief Executive Officer; Joel Van Dusen, Group Head of Corporate & Investment Banking; and Salman Hadi, Group Head of Treasury & Global Markets, attended the market opening ceremony at Nasdaq Dubai to celebrate the listing. The bell was rung by Ahmed Abdelaal in the presence of Hamed Ali, CEO of Nasdaq Dubai and Dubai Financial Market (DFM). On the debut sukuk, Mashreq Chairman Abdul Aziz Al Ghurair said: "This sukuk listing marks an important step in Mashreq's commitment to strengthening the global Islamic finance landscape. It is a clear demonstration of Mashreq's long-term commitment to Islamic finance, the deepening of cross-border capital flows, and the UAE's continued emergence as a global nexus for ethical and Sharia-compliant financing." "Through this programme, we are proud to reinforce investor trust and contribute meaningfully to the maturing of Islamic capital markets," he stated. Abdelaal said the debut listing on Nasdaq Dubai marks a new chapter in Mashreq's capital markets journey. "This sukuk issuance not only attracted strong investor interest, but also affirms our disciplined approach to funding, even in a complex macro environment. As we continue to diversify our capital structure through Sharia-compliant channels, we remain committed to delivering strong fundamentals, market transparency, and sustainable value for all stakeholders," he added. Welcoming the Mashreq listing, Ali said it reflects the bank's growing ambitions in the Islamic finance sector and underscores DFM's role as a leading marketplace that connects regional issuers with global investors. "As Dubai continues to strengthen its capital markets infrastructure, we at DFM remain committed to providing an efficient and transparent platform that supports diverse financing needs and promotes sustainable growth across the financial ecosystem," he stated. With this listing, the total value of sukuk listed on Nasdaq Dubai has reached $97.2 billion, further strengthening the exchange's position as one of the world's largest centres for Islamic fixed income. The overall value of debt securities listed on Nasdaq Dubai now stands at over $140 billion, across 163 issuances, said Ali.

Automation key to refinery resilience amid slowing oil demand, says IEA
The International Energy Agency's latest Oil Market Report demonstrates a structural shift in the industry, accelerating the need for automation and intelligent flow control at refineries to maintain profitability and operational resilience. According to the IEA's May 2025 report, global oil demand growth is expected to slow to 740,000 barrels per day this year, driven by record electric vehicle (EV) adoption and a challenging business climate. At the same time, OPEC+ is increasing output, and refining margins reached a 12-month high in April, underscoring the volatility that refinery operators must now navigate, it stated. In this environment, automation and intelligent flow control technologies are becoming essential tools to best weather economic headwinds and remain competitive on the global stage, says an industry expert in the oil and gas sector. Speaking at IMI's recent Petrochem Conference in Sardinia, Nicola Dessalvi, Petrochem Manager for Process Automation at IMI, said: "Refineries are facing a perfect storm of slowing demand, unpredictable pricing, and rising supply. In this context, automation is no longer a luxury – it's a necessity." "By integrating intelligent control systems and real-time diagnostics, operators can reduce plant downtime during planned maintenance, optimise throughput, curb energy consumption, and respond dynamically to market shifts," he stated. According to Dessalvi, automation technologies such as advanced valve diagnostics and predictive maintenance systems can help refineries maintain high margins even as market conditions fluctuate. As the global energy landscape continues to evolve, these tools can ensure plant managers are equipped to make data-driven decisions, reduce unplanned downtime, and extend the life of critical assets. They will also be crucial to maximising the efficiency of existing infrastructure during the transition to lower-carbon operations, it stated. "Refining margins may be strong today, but the underlying market signals are clear," remarked Dessalvi.
