Far-right Israeli minister taunts jailed Palestinian leader in prison visit
The 13-second clip shows Ben-Gvir, a far-right politician on whom the UK and several other countries imposed sanctions this year for incitement to violence against Palestinians, making threatening remarks to Barghouti while Israel's prisons minister, Kobi Yaakobi, an ally of Ben-Gvir stands nearby.
Barghouti, 66, who was jailed by an Israeli court in 2002 for his role in planning several killings during the second Intifada, appears gaunt after being held in solitary confinement for years. He is detained in Ganot prison, in central Israel, and is almost unrecognisable.
Ben-Gvir's visit had been described as being part of the pursuit of a policy of stricter conditions for Palestinian prisoners, but the emergence of the video suggests the footage may have been its primary purpose.
'You won't win. Whoever messes with the nation of Israel, whoever murders our children and women, we will wipe them out,' he says. 'You should know this, [this happened] throughout history.'
Ben-Gvir, the leader of the far-right Jewish Power party, said this year that 'there is no reason for a gram of food or aid to enter Gaza'.
He serves as the national security minister despite a conviction in 2007 for incitement to racism and supporting a terrorist organisation.
Barghouti, who is sometimes compared to Nelson Mandela, is a senior figure in Mahmoud Abbas's Fatah movement and is hugely popular in in the West Bank and Gaza. He is seen as one of the few figures who could meaningfully reconcile rival Palestinian factions.
Palestinians have long sought his release, reportedly including him in recent hostage negotiations, but Israel has refused.
The footage of Barghouti shows the first images of him in a decade. The organisation that represents Palestinian prisoners has alleged that Israeli prison officers have assaulted him; a claim Israel has denied.
In the video, Barghouti, who is standing in a white T-shirt, tries to speak, but Ben-Gvir interjects and the short clip ends. The Palestinian foreign ministry condemned the incident, describing Ben-Gvir's actions as 'organised state terrorism'.
The Palestinian Authority vice-president, Hussein al-Sheikh, described it as 'the epitome of psychological, moral and physical terrorism'.
The emergence of the footage follows similar grandstanding this week by Ben-Gvir's fellow far-right minister, Bezalel Smotrich, who said he would 'bury' the idea of Palestinian statehood after announcing a huge new illegal settlement construction.

Episode 5 Episode 5 of In The Mud starts with a flashback from five years ago, with Cecilia trying to calm a protest where Maria and Zurda are on the same team. The two women put up a fight against Cecilia, asking her to allow visitors inside the prison despite the COVID pandemic. Cecilia agrees to let some of the inmates have their cell-phones and while Maria asks Zurda to take responsibility for the phones, the protest ends. The episode moves to the present day as the police investigate the new inmate who died in the greenhouse. Cecilia tries to conceal the issue by claiming that the inmate died while trying to escape the prison. Meanwhile, Amparo is furious that Zarda was not able to protect her, upset that she had to protect herself. She threatens Zarda, which makes the latter promise to make the guilty person pay. Zarda tells Victoria that she is sure Maria was after this. At lunch, Marina joins the five, but Gladys leaves the table. Soledad, Yael and Olga wonder what's happened, and Marina explains that Gladys is mad at her. Olga starts to doubt Marina, too, when Maria is asked to meet Cecilia. Maria neither accepts nor denies responsibility for the inmate's death and asks Cecilia about Patricia and her baby to throw her off her back. Meanwhile, Yael tells Gladys that her daughter is being sent out of the prison for a short outing with the governor's wife. Gladys wonders why Cecilia is always nice to the pregnant women and wonders what is going on. Amparo gets furious when she learns that Maria has a monopoly on the meat that arrives inside the prison. Coco introduces Lana to Cleo, who promises to help reunite her with her son. Marina also talks to Lana, and during their conversation, she reveals how toxic her relationship with Martin was. She goes on to reveal how Martin was a jealous person but shared everything with his brother Dario, including her. Coco and Lana are shocked to hear this and promise to help Marina. Amparo notices the family unit and sees little children there. Elba tells Amparo how all the kids leave after they turn five years old, while the mothers stay back to complete their respective sentences. Elsewhere, Marina is thriving in prison as an adult content creator. She has all the privileges she needs while working out, taking videos and photos, eating the meals that she wants and consuming the drugs that she likes. All of this is at the behest of Zurda, who profits out of her work. China watches Marina from the side-lines when one day Zurda tells Marina that one of the men wants to have sex with her. Marina refuses, but Zurda puts her in place, declaring that she needs to entertain the client. Gladys shows up at Zurda's unit to collect the money according to her deal with Maria. The two women talk about Amparo, and Zurda threatens Gladys, asking her to keep away from Amparo. Marina is asked to go meet the client, but she asks Alan to come with her. Alan refuses, which upsets her. Gladys gives Maria the payment she had collected from the different units while Rocky gives her a massage. Maria reveals to Gladys how both her minions, Rocky and Cachete, were serving time for killing rapists. She asks Gladys to be prepared for any attack from Zurda and Amparo in the days to come. Maria gives Gladys a weapon from her collection to protect herself. That night, Amparo dreams of Cuervo but ends up suffering from a miscarriage in her sleep. Cecilia meets Amparo in the infirmary and consoles her, but the latter is shattered after losing the love of her life and his child, too. The next day, Andrés' wife shows up to pick Brisa up for a day out. At the same time, Marina's mother, Paula, comes to visit her. She asks Paula about her money. Marina is shocked to learn that Paula had spent all her money on her boyfriend. There is a cancer drive at the prison, and it is discovered that Gladys may have some growth in her breast. Gladys panics upon hearing the news but tries to keep calm. Meanwhile, Dr Soriano tells Vanessa that she is pregnant and asks her to keep the details of her pregnancy a secret. Marina learns that Alan was married and gets upset. She agrees to have sex with the client. Marina is disappointed when she is not able to climax during the intercourse, remembering her time with Alan. Yael, on the other hand, grows restless when Brisa does not come back that evening. She tries to visit Cecilia but is asked to go back. Just then, Eugenia shows up with Brisa. Yael takes her daughter back inside the prison. Meanwhile, the meat is delivered, and Maria goes to collect the best cuts for herself while Cachete and Rocky accompany her. Rocky leaves to collect Maria's medicine, leaving her behind with Cachete, who invites Amparo and the twins inside. The attack Maria while Gladys cries in the shower, worried about her diagnosis. Yael finds out about the diagnosis and tries to console Gladys. The two end up sharing a kiss while the twins kill Maria and hang her up on a meat hook. The Episode Review So, Zurda and Maria were friends before all this? No wonder Cecilia tried to cause differences between them; both of them were too much for her to handle as a team. It seems that Marina had a poor excuse for parents and had to work hard throughout her life. Even from prison, Marina is earning an income by selling her body on the internet, which makes me feel sorry for her. It's hard to see Gladys find out about her possible cancer diagnosis, but I am glad she has Yael in her journey. Given the fact that she has had a hard time coping with the loss of her husband, I hope Gladys continues to keep the bond that she has with the other four inmates. It was sad to see Maria die, but Amparo is a bigger threat to everyone inside now. I really wish she hadn't been caught because things would have been so different inside the prison. Gladys would be the best replacement for Maria now that she is dead but I am not sure how open she would be to stepping into her shoes, given the diagnosis. 'Devil in Ozarks' planned prison escape for months, cited lax security in kitchen, report says
A former police chief known as the 'Devil in the Ozarks' spent months planning his escape from an Arkansas prison, and said lax security in the kitchen where he worked allowed the convicted murderer to gather the supplies he needed, an internal review by prison officials released Friday said. The Department of Corrections' critical incident review of Grant Hardin's May 25 escape from the Calico Rock prison provides the most detailed description so far of his planning and the issues that allowed him to walk out of the facility. Hardin was captured 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) northwest of the Calico Rock prison on June 6. Authorities said he escaped by donning an outfit he designed to look like a law enforcement uniform. Hardin, who worked in the prison's kitchen, said he spent six months planning his escape and used black Sharpie markers and laundry he found lying around the kitchen to create the fake uniform, according to the report. Hardin fashioned a fake badge using the lid of a can. 'Hardin stated he would hide the clothes and other items he was going to need in the bottom of a trash can in the kitchen due to no one ever shaking it down,' the report says. Two prison employees have been fired for procedure violations that led to Hardin's escape. They include a kitchen employee who allowed Hardin on a back dock unsupervised and a tower guard who unlocked the back gate that Hardin walked through without confirming his identity. Several other employees have been suspended and one demoted, lawmakers were told this week. The kitchen's staff was 'very lax on security,' Hardin told investigators, allowing him to gather what he needed for his escape. Hardin said he didn't have any help from staff or other inmates. Hardin had constructed a ladder from wooden pallets in case he needed to scale the prison fence but didn't need it. '(Hardin) stated when he walked up to the gate, he just directed the officer to 'open the gate,' and he did,' the report says. After he escaped from the prison, Hardin survived on food he had smuggled out of the prison along with distilled water from his CPAP machine. Hardin also drank creek water and ate berries, bird eggs and ants. 'He said his plan was to hide in the woods for six months if need be and begin moving west out of the area,' the report says. Hardin, a former police chief in the small town of Gateway, near the Arkansas- Missouri border, is serving lengthy sentences for murder and rape. He was the subject of the TV documentary 'Devil in the Ozarks.' The report is one of two reviews into Hardin's escape, which is also being investigated by the Arkansas State Police. A legislative subcommittee has also been holding hearings about the escape. Republican Rep. Howard Beaty, who co-chairs the Legislative Council's Charitable, Penal and Correctional Institutions Subcommittee, said the panel hoped to discuss both reports with officials at a hearing next month. Republican Sen. Ben Gilmore, who sits on the panel, said he didn't think the department's review took a thorough enough look at the systemic issues that enabled Hardin's escape. 'They have focused on the final failure instead of all of the things that led up to it,' he said. The report also cites confusion among corrections officials in the early stages of Hardin's escape about which law enforcement agencies had been notified, the report says. 'It is obvious there was a lot of confusion during the beginning stages of opening the command center and of notifications being made,' the report says. Hardin had been misclassified and shouldn't have been held at the primarily medium-security prison, according to the review. After he was captured, Hardin was moved to a maximum-security prison. He has pleaded not guilty to escape charges, and his trial is set for November. Hardin's custody classification hadn't been reviewed since October 2019, the report says. The Department of Corrections' review says officials had taken several steps since Hardin's escape, including removing the electric locks from the gates to prevent someone from walking out without an officer present. The report also calls for additional cameras after finding a blind spot on the dock Hardin used, and for any 'shakedown' searches for contraband to include mechanical rooms and side rooms.

Israeli minister taunts imprisoned Palestinian leader not seen in years
Israel's national security minister visited a prominent Palestinian leader in jail and told him: 'You will not win,' footage shows. Marwan Barghouti, a leading member of the Palestinian Fatah party, has spent more than 20 years behind bars after being sentenced for his role in anti-Israeli attacks in the early 2000s. Itamar Ben-Gvir, the ultra-nationalist minister, visited him in his cell and shared footage of the encounter on X. It is the first time Barghouti has been seen publicly in years. In the clip, the minister and two other individuals, including a prison guard, surround Barghouti in a corner of his cell. 'You will not defeat us. Whoever harms the people of Israel, whoever kills children, whoever kills women... we will erase them,' Mr Ben-Gvir says in Hebrew. Barghouti, known by his supporters as 'the Palestinian Mandela', tries to respond but is interrupted by Ben Gvir, who says: 'No, you know this. And it's been the case throughout history.' The video does not specify where Barghouti is currently being held. Sources told AFP the meeting took place 'by chance' at the Ganot prison in southern Israel during a ministerial visit. 'This morning I read that various 'senior officials' in the Palestinian Authority didn't quite like what I said to arch-terrorist Marwan Barghouti – may his name be erased,' Mr Ben-Gvir said in the post accompanying the video on Friday morning. 'So I will repeat it again and again, without apology – whoever messes with the people of Israel, whoever murders our children, whoever murders our women, we will wipe them out. With God's help.' Solitary confinement Barghouti, who is now in his 60s, was arrested by Israel in 2002 and sentenced to life on murder charges in 2004. Israel considers him a terrorist and convicted him over his role in the second intifada, or uprising, from 2000-2005. He often tops opinion polls of popular Palestinian leaders. Rights groups say Barghouti has been held in solitary confinement since Oct 7 2023, the day Hamas launched its deadly attacks on Israel. Palestinian supporters have accused guards of 'brutally assaulting' him, which the Israeli prison service has denied. Arab Barghouti, his son, told AFP he was shocked by the video, both at the state of his father, whom he had not seen in three years, and at what he called the 'blatantly arrogant' minister. 'He's lost a lot of weight, and he looks old,' he said of his father. 'They will not break his image in the eyes of the Palestinian people.' In a statement released by Wafa, the official Palestinian news agency, the Palestinian Authority's foreign ministry denounced the confrontation as 'an unprecedented provocation'. Responding to the video in a post on X, the Palestinian mission to the United Nations said Barghouti was 'enduring extremely harsh humanitarian conditions in his solitary confinement cell'. It added that he had 'lost more than half his weight due to deliberate medical neglect and mistreatment'. 'At the same time, extremist Israeli Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir continues to directly threaten him in an attempt to break his will and resilience,' it said. It is understood Hamas have sought to exchange Barghouti for the remaining Israeli hostages it holds, but Israel is unlikely to free him.
