Japanese investor completes takeover of Port of Nigg
Mitsui took a 25.5% stake in Global Energy, owned by businessman Roy MacGregor, in 2012.The Tokyo-based firm brings specialism in engineering, energy, shipping and port operations.The company said it hoped to further expand manufacturing capacity and infrastructure for both the on and offshore markets after completing the deal.
Highlands and Islands Enterprise announced a £10m investment in the port in March to create a new heavy-duty quayside.At the time, the deputy first minister, Kate Forbes, described it as a "catalyst for further investment".Nigg received its green freeport status in January 2023, alongside Forth Ports.Green freeports are able to offer tax incentives and lower tariffs within the zones they cover.However, they have commitments to meeting net zero targets and supporting fair work practices.In February, HMRC gave it permission to have some of its own customs arrangements, meaning taxes and certain duties on goods arriving do not have to be paid.

UK hedge fund Marshall Wace posted mixed returns for July, source says
LONDON, Aug 4 (Reuters) - British hedge fund Marshall Wace returned mixed results in two of its funds in July, a source close to the matter told Reuters on Monday. Co-founded by British financier Paul Marshall, the $76.9 billion firm returned 1.6% in July culminating in a 6.1% performance for 2025 so far in its Eureka Fund, the source said. The hedge fund's Market Neutral Tops fund returned -0.22% for July and is up 10.99% year to date the source added. Systematic stock trading hedge funds, like Marshall Wace, are up roughly 10% for 2025 so far, said Goldman Sachs on Monday.

Scottish ministers overrule advice and approve Cairngorms hotel plans
A letter published by the Scottish Government's Planning and Environmental Appeals Division (DPEA) reveals that ministers have opted to green-light proposals for 22 self-catering apartments, shops, a hotel, and underground parking at 111 Grampian Road in Aviemore. It comes more than two years after SNP ministers took the decision to 'call in' the planning application and rule on it themselves – which happened on May 3, 2023. Later that month, the Cairngorms National Park Authority said it had been minded to approve the proposals. However, a Government planning reporter then recommended that the proposal be refused, submitting their initial report on the development on November 23, 2023, with a supplementary report following on January 17, 2025. The primary issues of concern were flood risk, transport impacts on B9152 Grampian Road, and design. However, SNP ministers have gone against the recommendations and approved the development, recognising that it will be on 'brownfield land set within a built up area'. Work on development will be allowed to go ahead after a series of conditions have been met. These include: Developers must contribute fairly (cash or in-kind) to active travel measures to offset traffic impact on B9152 Grampian Road. Updated reptile and otter surveys must be completed before starting work. An updated Flood Risk Assessment (FRA) must be conducted based on latest Scottish Environment Protection Agency climate data. Owners must install and maintain bat and bird boxes across the site. Four ensuite rooms must be kept permanently as hotel staff accommodation. The DPEA letter outlining the SNP ministers' decision states: 'On balance, and subject to conditions and planning obligation, the Scottish Ministers are satisfied there is sufficient development plan support to outweigh the conflict with flood policies, and they consider that the proposed development overall is in accordance with the development plan, and there are no material considerations which would outweigh that. 'In reaching this conclusion, the Scottish Ministers have given due consideration to the aims of the National Park as required by Section 9.6 of the National Parks (Scotland) Act 2000.'

New £100million indoor resort to open in the UK with ‘next generation waterpark' and thermal spas
A huge Therme spa complex with a huge indoor waterpark, pools and slides, is still coming to Glasgow. Therme Group has plans to open multiple new sites across the globe, including one in Scotland. 4 Since the announcement of its opening back in 2021, there haven't been many updates on the upcoming Therme Scotland. But the company confirmed the build was still going ahead in a recent Instagram update. On social media it created a post about Therme's new destinations across the globe which included Manchester and Glasgow. The new attraction is planned to open in central Glasgow next to the Riverside Museum at a cost of £100million. The site will have a "next-generation indoor waterpark" with 35 water slides, 25 pools which are both indoor and outdoor, and a wave pool. There will be more relaxing areas too like thermal spas, wellbeing garden, sauna, steam room and exotic relaxation areas. The initial plans in 2021 also included a bridge being built across the River Kelvin. This would link the Riverside Museum to Therme Scotland and expanding access to the Glasgow waterfront. At the time of its announcement in 2021, Therme Group CEO Stelian Iacob said: "Therme Scotland will create a fun and accessible experience with profound health and wellbeing benefits for all. "We look forward to engaging with the Glasgow community as we progress with the design and development of Therme Scotland.' 4 4 Forming part of Peel Waters in Glasgow, Therme Group is expected to update designs ahead of formal planning submission in late 2025. Therme Manchester was initially announced in March 2020 with an initial opening in 2024 - however it is still in the works. The attraction bosses have said the first major construction phase will start later in 2025. The huge complex was predicted to take between 24 and 30 months to build, so it could mean that it's might not be open until 2028. Costs have risen too, initially the build was set to be £250million, this has since jumped to £400million. When the Manchester site does open, it will have a waterpark with 25 swimming pools, 35 water slides and even an indoor beach. And it will be 33C all-year round so visitors can enjoy it whatever the weather. Therme Spa is known for its affordability, at the site in Bucharest, one day entry tickets cost from €36 (£31.28). One woman even flew herself and her mum out to the Therme Spa in Romania because it was cheaper than a spa day trip in the UK. Flights and spa passes for the pair set them back £315 - rather than the £400 at the spa in their neighbourhood.
