Kazakhstan's Mikhail Shaidorov is third heading into the free program. Kévin Aymoz, a French skater who has struggled with consistency, is fourth.

The two other American entries had performances to be proud of.
On Tuesday, Andrew Torgashev was the only American male skater to show up for the first of two practices. Jason Brown and Malinin saved their energy for their 10 p.m. practice. Torgashev showed up for both.
'I mean, I'm here to skate, so why not skate?' Torgashev said Tuesday.
On Thursday, the extra practice paid off. Scoring a personal-best short program score of 87.27, the 23-year-old Torgashev found himself in eighth heading into Saturday's free skate. He landed a quadruple toe loop, triple Axel and a triple flip-triple toe loop combination.
'My goal for this competition and any competition is to make the all of those run-throughs, all of that soreness, sweat and tears, all worth it,' said Torgashev. 'This short today was worth it.'
Brown, the crowd favorite,
mesmerized the TD Garden crowd with his 'The Legend of Tarzan' short program. After struggling with equipment issues for much of the season, the seven-time US World team member squeaked out the ending of his triple Axel and popped the second jump of his triple-triple combination into a double. His score of 84.72 left him 12th.

Despite the errors, Brown was excited for the opportunity to skate again on the Garden ice, where he had his breakthrough moment at the 2014 US Championships. As was the case11 years ago, the crowd roared and gave him a standing ovation.
'Here in 2014, it was really the first time in my career that I felt that overwhelming sense of love and support,' said Brown.

Jaylen Brown's father arrested in Las Vegas in parking lot stabbing incident
The father of Boston Celtics All-Star Jaylen Brown was arrested in Las Vegas and charged with attempted murder after reportedly stabbing another man in a parking lot. According to TMZ, Quenton Marselles Brown admitted dinging the victim's car with his door when he got out of his Lincoln Navigator. An argument ensued and Brown stabbed the victim in the back and stomach, the website reported. Court documents listed Brown as an inmate in the Clark County Detention Center on attempted murder charges. A person with knowledge of the incident, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss it, confirmed that the man arrested is Jaylen Brown's father. The Associated Press requested the police report from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department but was told it wasn't immediately available. The Celtics declined to comment. Brown has enjoyed an incredible career in Boston since the Celtics took him third overall in the 2016 NBA Draft. He's been an NBA All-Star four times and was named to the All-NBA Second Team in 2023 when he averaged a career-best 26.6 points per game to go with 6.9 rebounds (also a career-high) and 3.5 assists. Brown and Jayson Tatum finally got over the hump and brought Boston its 18th NBA Championship in 2024, when Brown was named MVP of both the Eastern Conference Finals against the Indiana Pacers and the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks. The Celtics beat the Mavs in five games in the Finals, thanks in large part to Brown's stellar defense on Dallas point guard Luka Doncic. Off the court, Brown has also done a lot for the Boston community, especially after he signed his $304 million max contract with the franchise. There will be a lot on Brown's shoulders during the 2025-26 season, as Tatum will likely be sidelined for the entire season after he ruptured his Achilles in Boston's second-round playoff loss to the New York Knicks in May.

Leagues Cup Semifinals: Messi Back for All-MLS Final Four?
Leagues Cup Leagues Cup Semifinals: Messi Back for All-MLS Final Four? Updated Aug. 21, 2025 5:52 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link For the third year running, the Leagues Cup final will be an all-MLS affair. Will it also once again feature Lionel Messi? Despite a revamped format that was supposed to benefit Liga MX entrants, American teams dominated their counterparts from south of the border in Wednesday's quarterfinals, creating a Final Four featuring all MLS teams. Messi, who led Inter Miami to the title of the 2023 edition, sat out Wednesday's game against Mexican titans Tigres with an injury, but his former Barcelona running buddy Luis Suárez stepped up by scoring both goals in the GOAT's absence in the 2-1 win. Both Orlando City and the Seattle Sounders needed penalties to book their semifinals spot. Orlando – the sole MLS squad not to host their quarterfinal — outlasted Toluca, winners of Mexico's 2025 Clausura title in May. After a scoreless 90 minutes in Carson, California, longtime Peru national team goalkeeper Pedro Gallese was Orlando's hero in the shootout, stopping two Toluca spot-kicks and then scoring the clinching goal from 12 yards. ADVERTISEMENT Seattle survived against Puebla on PKs despite playing the final quarter-hour with 10 men after winger Danny Musovski was shown a straight red card for bumping Costa Rican referee Juan Gabriel Calderon while protesting a caution. Finally, the defending MLS Cup champion LA Galaxy topped Pachuca 2-1 in Wednesday's nightcap at Dignity Heath Sports Park, with former Germany international Marco Reus scoring one goal and setting up the other for the hosts, who have now won more games — four — in this Leagues Cup than they have during the first nine months of the 2025 regular season. They're now two more victories away from another trophy. Semifinals Inter Miami vs. Orlando City Sunshine State bragging rights will be on the line when the Herons host Óscar Pareja's side. Orlando, the 16th and lowest seed heading into the tournament's knockout stage, has already exceeded expectations by getting to this stage. All the pressure will be on Miami, who Messi led to the 2023 Leagues Cup crown before even making his MLS regular season debut. Adding to the intrigue, the Lions have taken both competitive meetings so far in 2025, outscoring Miami 7-1 in those games — including a 4-1 drubbing in MLS action on Aug. 10. Miami's power trio – Rodrigo De Paul, Lionel Messi, and Luis Suarez – are aiming for a trip to the final. (Photo by Chris Arjoon/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) For Miami, the obvious question is whether Messi will be able to suit up next week. The 38-year-old Argentina captain initially strained a muscle in his right leg in Inter's second first-round encounter, missing Miami's next two outings. He returned in typically spectacular fashion last weekend, but was then a surprising late scratch from coach Javier Mascherano's lineup versus Tigres. Having Messi available would be a huge boost for Mascherano & Co., even if it means holding the World Cup-winner out of Saturday's regular season match at D.C. United. LA Galaxy vs. Seattle Sounders With three wins and just 16 points from their first 26 league games, the Galaxy own the worst record in the 30-team MLS. But the champs have been a different group in the Leagues Cup, and that run continued on Wednesday. Pachuca marked the fourth-straight Liga MX opponent that Greg Vanney's squad has vanquished, joining Tijuana, Cruz Azul and Santos Laguna. Three of those wins were in regulation, with the Galaxy out-scoring those four foes 9-4 on aggregate. Marco Reus and the LA Galaxy can make up for an abysmal year by aiming to win the Leagues Cup. (Photo by Liza Rosales/ISI Photos/ISI Photos via Getty Images) Will they be able to fare as well against a challenger from their own league? The Sounders and Galaxy have faced off just once in 2025, and the outcome wasn't pretty for the Angelenos as Seattle routed the hosts 4-0 in Carson earlier this month. One silver lining for LA is that Musovski, who scored twice for the visitors that day, is suspended for the rematch. Celtics' Jaylen Brown Receives Bad News in Brutal Outlook
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Jaylen Brown has watched his Boston Celtics fall hard over the last several months. First, Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles during the second round of the playoffs. Then, the Celtics traded Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday and allowed both Al Horford and Luke Kornet to depart via free agency. The Celtics are just two seasons removed from winning a championship, but title contention will almost certainly be out of reach for Boston during the 2025-26 campaign. So what does that mean for Brown? More news: 76ers Linked to Huge Paul George Trade With Western Conference Team Brown will be entering his first season ever as a lead scorer for the C's, and while he has averaged well over 20 points per game six years in a row, he did that as the No. 2 behind Tatum. Can he deliver as the top option? Bleacher Report's Grant Hughes isn't so sure, labeling Brown as the Celtics' biggest faller heading into the new NBA season and thinks the 28-year-old could be in for a rough year. Plus, get in-app odds boosts on stars like Celtics SF Jaylen Brown."Brown's scoring average dipped to a five-year-low of 22.2 points per game last season. Maybe he'll beat that number as Boston's alpha stand-in for Tatum, but Brown is bound to have major efficiency struggles," Hughes wrote. "A shaky handle, inconsistent three-point shooting and durability issues that make big minutes dangerous (Brown hasn't played more than 70 games since he was a sixth man in 2018-19) will all be more clearly exposed with less talent surrounding him." Hughes went on to suggest that Brown could miss his first All-Star team since 2022, which is entirely possible given the circumstances surrounding him. More news: Boston Celtics Receive Significant Trade Update Brown underwent knee surgery back in June after battling through the injury throughout the entirety of the 2024-25 campaign He should obviously be good to go for the regular season, but will he experience after effects? The four-time All-Star is a terrific player, but whether or not he is actually a No. 1 guy has long been a hot debate. More than likely, Brown is just a very good No. 2 who can moonlight as a No. 1 on occasion, but not for a whole season.
