The St. Columba's Concert Series, 55 Vaucluse Ave., Middletown, is pleased to welcome back pianist Paul Bolles-Beaven on Sunday, May 18 at 3 p.m. for a special piano recital in the Chapel, including the world premiere of "Memories of a Forgotten March," composed by the pianist's son, William Bolles-Beaven. The program will also include the Variations in F minor of Franz Joseph Haydn and Beethoven's Piano Sonata Number 14, 'Moonlight.'
Paul Bolles-Beaven, a former New York City restaurateur with Union Square Hospitality Group, fell in love with the piano playing with his toys under the family's grand piano while his father played the classical repertoire. Experimenting at an early age and beginning lessons when he was 11, Paul grew up loving music, singing in the church choir and performing as a boy soprano and then earning a BA in Music at Columbia College of Columbia University. Performing regularly in his 20's Paul performed at Music Mountain's Young Artist Series, with The Hudson Valley Philharmonic as a winner of their young artist competition, at Weil Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall and at The Newport Art Museum.
When his restaurant career took off, Paul stepped away from the piano and did not perform for 25 years. Then while attending his son William's piano lesson, Paul was inspired to reclaim his love of piano and performing and has been doing so with joy, ever since.
Tickets will be on sale at the door: Adults $20, Students and Children $10.

Splash pad in Davis that honors fallen police officer Natalie Corona opens

A splash pad is officially open, honoring fallen Davis police officer Natalie Corona six years after she was killed in the line of duty while responding to a crash in 2019. "She had a joyful spirit, that is the vibe and the energy that we see here today," said Deanne Machado, the parks director for the City of Davis. "So it is a perfect match to honor who she was and her spirit." The project was five years in the making. More than half a million dollars raised through community support brought the project to life. Local artists added personal touches in tilework as each piece was designed with the help of the people who knew Corona best. "There are so many easter egg moments in the tiles that represent stories that her friends, family, and the community know about," Machado said. Corona's best friend, Mariah Diaz, said when the water started flowing, memories flooded her mind. "It felt like that was me and her right there," Diaz said. "It was all meant to be. I truly feel her spirit here with us, she's looking down on us and has the biggest smile on her face." Her friends and colleagues at the Davis Police Department see the splash pad as a fitting tribute to the young officer who wanted to serve this community. "The closure of this project is sort of a symbolic closure of a really big chapter, too, but a joyful one," Machado said. The splash pad, located in Central Park in Davis, is free and will be open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily during the summer.

Greg Iles, Mississippi author of ‘Natchez Burning' trilogy, dies of cancer at 65

Greg Iles, the Mississippi author of the 'Natchez Burning' trilogy and other works, has died. He was 65. Iles died Friday after a decades-long battle with the blood cancer multiple myeloma, his literary agent Dan Conaway posted Saturday on Facebook. Initially diagnosed with the incurable condition in 1996, he kept his illness private until completing his final novel, 'Southern Man,' which was published in 2024. Iles was born in Germany but moved to Natchez, Mississippi, with his family when he was just three years old and developed a deep connection with the region. Many of his stories are set in Mississippi, including the 'Natchez Burning' trilogy, historical fiction suspense novels exploring race and class in the 1960s Jim Crow South. Conaway described Iles as 'warm, funny, fearless, and completely sui generis.' 'To be on the other end of the phone as he talked through character and plot, problem-solving on the fly, was to be witness to genius at work, plain and simple,' he wrote on Saturday. 'As a writer he fused story-craft, bone-deep humanity, and a growing sense of moral and political responsibility with the ferocious precisions of a whirling dervish or a master watchmaker.' In March 2011, Iles suffered a ruptured aorta and a partial leg amputation and spent eight days in a medically induced coma after another driver struck his car on Highway 61 near Natchez. He eventually recovered. Iles performed with the musical group The Rock Bottom Remainders along with popular authors Stephen King, Amy Tan and others.

Needham Maintains Buy Rating on The Walt Disney Company (DIS) Stock

The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) is one of the Reddit Stocks with the Highest Upside Potential. On August 7, Laura Martin from Needham maintained a 'Buy' rating on the company's stock, with a price objective of $125.00. The analyst's rating is backed by several positive developments for The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) in Q3 2025. Notably, the company's diluted EPS rose to $2.92 from $1.43 in Q3 2024, and adjusted EPS went up by 16% for Q3 2025 to $1.61 from $1.39 in Q3 2024. A packed theater of moviegoers watching a blockbuster film produced by the entertainment company. Furthermore, The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS)'s direct-to-consumer segment demonstrated profitability with an operating income of $346 million. The company's Experiences segment saw operating income of $2.5 billion, reflecting a rise of $294 million compared to Q3 2024. The operating income in the quarter demonstrates a ~$40 million benefit from the timing of the Easter holiday, and a ~$30 million impact from pre-opening expenses at Disney Cruise Line. Despite the concerns, the positive financial performance and strategic initiatives, like asset swap involving ESPN and the NFL Network, as well as the timely launch of ESPN's flagship service, supported the analyst's rating. Diamond Hill Capital, an investment management company, released its Q1 2025 investor letter. Here is what the fund said: 'Other top Q2 contributors included The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS), Ferguson Enterprises and Capital One Financial. Diversified media and entertainment company Walt Disney benefited from easing macroeconomic concerns, primarily in its parks division, which is particularly sensitive to the economic backdrop.' While we acknowledge the potential of DIS as an investment, we believe certain AI stocks offer greater upside potential and carry less downside risk.
