Ranbir Kapoor Replaced Salman Khan To Play Ram In Ramayana After Sohail Khan's 'Mistake'

Salman Khan was once set to play Lord Ram in a Ramayana film. A reported fallout involving Sohail Khan and Pooja Bhatt allegedly cost him the role, now played by Ranbir Kapoor.
Long before Ranbir Kapoor was locked in as Lord Ram for Nitesh Tiwari and Namit Malhotra's epic Ramayana, Bollywood superstar Salman Khan was reportedly in line to play the divine role. With anticipation mounting for Tiwari's two-part cinematic retelling—slated to release its first installment on Diwali 2026—a curious chapter from the '90s has resurfaced, revealing that Salman had once even donned the bow and arrow for a different Ramayana project helmed by none other than his brother, Sohail Khan.
As per reports from Mid-Day and India.com, Sohail had announced a film based on the Ramayana back in the early 1990s, during his initial stint as a director following his debut with Auzaar. Salman Khan was roped in to play Lord Ram, with Sonali Bendre cast as Sita. The buzz around the project grew when actor-filmmaker Pooja Bhatt also came on board.
In fact, nearly 40 percent of the film had reportedly been shot, and Salman had even begun promotional work, appearing in full Ram avatar—complete with traditional attire, bow, and arrow. But the film never saw the light of day. What derailed the project wasn't creative differences or budgetary constraints—but a budding off-screen relationship.
According to insiders, romance blossomed between Sohail Khan and Pooja Bhatt during the film's shoot. Pooja had even spoken about marriage during a 1995 interview, indicating the relationship had grown serious. However, when their father, legendary screenwriter Salim Khan, learned about the relationship, he reportedly advised Sohail to step away.
Although Salman tried to maintain peace and salvage the film, things took a turn. Pooja, upset with the cold reception from the Khan family, is said to have exited the film, effectively bringing the entire production to a halt. As a result, the project was shelved indefinitely—and Salman's portrayal of Lord Ram remained an unrealized dream.
Now, nearly three decades later, the Ramayana has found new life under Tiwari's direction with Ranbir Kapoor as Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as the formidable Ravana. But for those who remember Bollywood in the '90s, the tale of Salman Khan's lost Ramayana remains a fascinating 'what could have been."

Ankita Lokhande and Rajiv Adatia defend Premanand Ji amid backlash over his viral 'purity' comment, calling it a truth spoken for both men and women. Premanand Ji Maharaj is one of the most loved and praised spiritual leaders in the country currently, but recently he was dragged into a controversy when a few assumed that he was making a comment against women. However, Celebrity MasterChef fame Rajiv Adatia and Ankita Lokhande have reacted to the trolling and come out in support of Premanand Ji. Rajiv Adatia took to his social media and dropped the full video of Premanand Ji Maharaj's viral comment, writing, 'Bilkul sahi kaha!!! Kaan kholo!! Dono ladki aur ladke ke liye bola hai!! And what he's speaking is the utmost truth! Full support for Premanand Ji Maharaj!! In this time in the world, people like him bring the simplicity of spiritualism back! Kuch bhi galat nahi bola usne!!" View this post on Instagram A post shared by Rajiv Adatia (@rajivadatia) He further added in the caption, 'What has he said wrong, tell me?? Ankita Lokhande also came out in support of the spiritual leader and reshared Rajiv's reel, echoing similar thoughts. Rajiv's reel has received love from netizens, and supporters of the spiritual leader showered him with high praise. One user wrote, 'Social media is so toxic for this generation. Thank you, Rajiv, for sharing this." Another commented, 'Yess, full support! That's the problem… nobody wants to listen to the truth. It is today's truth." A third user added, 'Absolutely… can't agree more… and what else do people expect from a spiritual guru to endorse? It was said for both genders. It meant that loyalty, love, and trust are getting maligned in today's Kalyug." What Premanand Ji Maharaj Said In the video, Premanand Ji talks about the growing trend of multiple relationships. While he made sure to speak about both genders, his one line didn't sit well with the internet. Social media started trolling him for saying, 'Only 2 to 4 girls out of 100 are pure in today's times." Watch the video here: Recently, the makers released the first Aavan Jaavan from the film. Unveiled on Kiara Advani's birthday, the song 'Aavan Jaavan' is a sultry, slow-burn anthem sung by Arijit Singh and Nikhita Gandhi, composed by Pritam. It showcases Hrithik and Kiara in their most intimate and carefree avatars yet—lounging by the pool, exchanging intense glances, and embracing the tropical heat with poolside passion. Kiara, radiant in a yellow bikini and off-shoulder set, shares electric screen space with Hrithik, who plays it suave and intense. Their simmering chemistry, combined with breathtaking visuals from Tuscany and Rome, makes the song a lush romantic escape. But the real storm brews in the War 2 trailer, which expands the YRF Spy Universe with unmatched ambition. Hrithik returns as the enigmatic Kabir, who vows to sacrifice everything—his identity, home, and loved ones—to become a shadow in service of a greater cause. Enter Jr NTR, making a fiery Bollywood debut with the line: 'Main un jungon mein ladta hoon jahan ladne ki himmat koi nahi karta." The stage is set for an epic collision of two titans. The trailer is packed with explosive action, high-speed chases, and emotional intensity. One surprising twist? Kiara Advani isn't just arm candy—she's seen landing powerful kicks and confronting Kabir head-on, firmly establishing her role as a dynamic force in the narrative. While romance blossoms between Hrithik and Kiara, it's undercut by Kabir's haunting voiceover: 'Main sab kuchh chhod doonga… sabko." Together, the trailer and song tease a story that is both intimate and epic—a spy thriller laced with sacrifice, love, and redemption. Directed by Ayan Mukerji, War 2 isn't just a sequel—it's a cornerstone of the YRF Spy Universe, which now includes Pathaan and Tiger 3, and is rumoured to segue into the upcoming Alpha starring Alia Bhatt. view comments First Published: August 03, 2025, 11:35 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
