Four Nations Face-Off: USA vs. Finland odds, picks and predictions
Team USA meet Team Finland Thursday in the opening match for both teams at the Four Nations Face-Off Tournament at Bell Centre in Montreal. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET (ESPN). Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's hockey odds around the USA vs. Finland odds and make our expert hockey picks and predictions.
Team USA projected lines
Line 1: LW Kyle Connor (Jets), C Jack Eichel (Golden Knights), RW Matthew Tkachuk (Panthers)
(Jets), C (Golden Knights), RW (Panthers) Line 2: LW Jake Guentzel (Lightning), C Auston Matthews (Maple Leafs), RW Jack Hughes (Devils)
(Lightning), C (Maple Leafs), RW (Devils) Line 3: LW Brady Tkachuk (Senators), C J.T. Miller (Rangers), RW Matthew Boldy (Wild)
(Senators), C (Rangers), RW (Wild) Line 4: LW Brock Nelson (Islanders), C Vincent Trocheck (Rangers), RW Dylan Larkin (Red Wings)
(Islanders), C (Rangers), RW (Red Wings) Defense 1: LD Jaccob Slavin (Hurricanes), RD Adam Fox (Rangers)
(Hurricanes), RD (Rangers) Defense 2: LD Zach Werenski (Blue Jackets), RD Charlie McAvoy (Bruins)
(Blue Jackets), RD (Bruins) Defense 3: LD Noah Hanifin (Golden Knights), RD Brock Faber (Wild)
(Golden Knights), RD (Wild) Goalies: Connor Hellebuyck (Jets), Jake Oettinger (Stars)
(Jets), (Stars) Scratched: LW Chris Kreider (Rangers), D Jake Sanderson (Senators), G Jeremy Swayman (Bruins)
Team USA enters this game stacked top to bottom. Kreider is on the outside looking in, that's how strong this team is. The difference between USA and rival Canada is goaltending, and, on paper, the Americans look to be much, much deeper in that particular category. While Canada struggled to get by Sweden in overtime Wednesday (4-3), USA should see very little issue with Finland, a team projected to be the weakest in the four-nation field.
Team Finland projected lines
Line 1: LW Artturi Lehkonen (Avalanche), C Aleksander Barkov (Panthers), RW Mikko Rantanen (Hurricanes)
(Avalanche), C (Panthers), RW (Hurricanes) Line 2: LW Roope Hintz (Stars), C Sebastian Aho (Hurricanes), RW Patrik Laine (Canadiens)
(Stars), C (Hurricanes), RW (Canadiens) Line 3: LW Eetu Luostarinen (Panthers), C Anton Lundell (Panthers), RW Mikael Granlund (Stars)
(Panthers), C (Panthers), RW (Stars) Line 4: LW Teuvo Teravainen (Blackhawks), C Erik Haula (Devils), RW Joel Armia (Canadiens)
(Blackhawks), C (Devils), RW (Canadiens) Defense 1: LD Niko Mikkola (Panthers), RD Esa Lindell (Stars)
(Panthers), RD (Stars) Defense 2: LD Urho Vaakanainen (Rangers), RD Nikolas Matinpalo (Senators)
(Rangers), RD (Senators) Defense 3: LD Olli Maatta (Utah), RD Henri Jokiharju (Sabres)
(Utah), RD (Sabres) Goalies: Juuse Saros (Predators), Kevin Lankinen (Canucks)
(Predators), (Canucks) Scratched: RW Kaapo Kakko (Kraken), D Juuso Valimaki (Utah), G Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (Sabres)
Finland has serviceable goaltending and mediocre defense, but the offensive lines certainly aren't as deep as the Americans … or the other teams in the tournament for that matter. Finland will lean heavily upon its top 6 forwards to get the job done as there is a precipitous drop-off in talent and likely production with the bottom 6. The roster looks more like a team fighting to get into the playoffs, rather than a world-class, championship squad.

USA vs. Finland projected goalies
Connor Hellebuyck (34-7-2, 2.07 GAA, .925 SV%, 6 SO) vs. Juuse Saros (11-23-6, 2.95 GAA, .889 SV%, 4 SO)
Hellebuyck is confirmed to start the opener for the Americans, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him go wire-to-wire. The Michigan native is one of the best goaltenders going in the NHL this season, and he is on pace to rack 50 victories and 9 shutouts, both of which would be career high marks.
Saros is confirmed to start for Team Finland. While his win-loss record isn't very good with the struggling Predators, he could see an uptick in production with a lot more offensive firepower supporting him. In his past 5 starts with the Predators, the offense managed just 7 goals of support, or 1.4 goals per game.

USA vs. Finland picks and predictions
Prediction
USA 5, Finland 2
Backing Team USA (-350) will cost 3½ times the potential return, and that's way too much risk for not nearly enough return.
While tournament favorite Canada struggled with Sweden in the opening match Wednesday in Montreal, the Swedes could easily rise up and win this event. Finland (+280), on the other hand, isn't nearly as talented from top to bottom, and a Suomi championship would literally be 'Miracle on Ice 2.'
AVOID.
BACK TEAM USA -1.5 (-130), laying the goal and a half. Saros is likely to keep Finland in it for a while, but eventually, the powerful and stacked lines will keep coming for the Americans, wearing down the heavy underdogs. By the end of the second period into the third, look for USA to pull away.
OVER 6 (-115) is worth playing lightly, but go with a half-unit play at best.
It's going to be tough for Finland to beat Hellebuyck, who will have an even more powerful offense supporting him than he has in Winnipeg.
For USA in this tournament, whether it's Hellebuyck, Oettinger or Swayman starting, it's going to be an uphill battle for the opposition.
The Americans, though, should do most of the heavy lifting to get this one across the finish line for the OVER 6 (-115).

Saints receiver Chris Olave brushes off concussion concerns and laughs off trade talk
METAIRIE, La. (AP) — Chris Olave, the New Orleans Saints leading receiver in two of his first three seasons, wanted to make two things clear. He is not concerned about the long-term implications of repeated concussions and sees himself spending his entire career with New Orleans. Olave has been a full participant in non-contact, offseason practices and this week's mandatory minicamp, but has not played in an NFL game since last Nov. 3. That was the day he was leveled by Panthers safety Xavier Woods during a downfield route across the middle of the field. Olave remained in a prone position on the field for several minutes, after which he was taken from the stadium to a Charlotte hospital. While he was permitted to return to practice in December, he never returned to the lineup. 'It was tough, man, at first.; I ain't never really sat out that long,' Olave said after practice on Wednesday. 'That was really my first major injury. ... Just not being able to go and practice and go to meetings with my guys was the worst part, but I feel like I'm ready. I was training and lifting and everything in December. So, I feel like I'm good.' Olave has had at least four confirmed concussions in his first three seasons. The first occurred when he was a rookie in 2022 during an Oct. 9 game against Seattle. He missed just the following game and finished the season with team highs of 72 catches for 1,042 yards. During the 2023 season, he did not miss a game after a Week 12 concussion against Atlanta and finished that season with team highs of 87 catches and 1,123 yards receiving. Last season, however, he missed nine games because of two concussions. He sat out just one game after his first against Tampa Bay on Oct. 13 before the Nov. 3 one in Carolina ended his third NFL season. Olave consulted with specialists after the most recent head injury. 'They said I was OK back in December when they cleared me. It was just unlucky situations I was being put in,' Olave said. 'God's got me at the end of the day. I'm not worried about nothing. So, just got to go out there 100% and be ready.' Saints rookie coach Kellen Moore, hired in February after winning a Super Bowl with Philadelphia as the Eagles' offensive coordinator, has largely brushed aside questions about Olave's concussion history. 'I don't worry too much about that,' Moore said. 'We feel really really good about Chris. He's had an excellent offseason, an excellent career so far and (has) an excellent future. 'We feel like we've got a good one in him,' Moore added. So, apparently, do some other teams who've reportedly asked the Saints about their willingness to trade Olave as New Orleans rebuilds from a five-win 2024 season. The Saints also have lacked a proven quarterback since veteran Derek Carr's sudden retirement in May. All three of New Orleans current QBs have less than three season of experience and not a single NFL win. But Olave expressed optimism about those young QBs — rookie Tyler Shough, second-year pro Spencer Rattler and third-year pro Jake Haener. 'The young QBs are good,' Olave said. 'I don't think they're going to come in and have hiccups. I feel like they got a good head on their shoulders. They got a good IQ. They're ready to play NFL ball. So, I'm excited.' Olave also laughed off reports that he's the subject of trade offers. 'It's all rumors, man,' Olave said. 'In the offseason, everybody's trying to have something for clicks. So, I love it here. I love the front office. I love my coaches. I'm excited to be here and I want to be here forever.' ___ AP NFL:

A reality check for the USMNT: Why Poch's plan backfired in an ugly loss
If Mauricio Pochettino wanted to learn more about the depth of the U.S. men's national team player pool, he sure got a lesson on Tuesday night. The Argentine coach's young and experimental USMNT lineup was roundly embarrassed 4-0 by Switzerland in a friendly match in Nashville, in a game that served as the Americans' final dress rehearsal for the Concacaf Gold Cup, which Pochettino's squad opens on Sunday against Trinidad and Tobago (kickoff at 6 p.m. ET on FOX). The big takeaway? If this team is going to make any noise at all at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on home soil a year from now, the USMNT regulars can't get back soon enough. For reasons too various to fully recap here, Pochettino is without most of what most would consider his strongest possible lineup this summer. Christian Pulisic isn't there. Neither are Folarin Balogun, Sergino Dest, Weston, McKennie, Yunus Musah, Ricardo Pepi, Gio Reyna, Antonee Robinson, Joe Scally, Tanner Tessmann or Tim Weah. Heart and soul midfielder Tyler Adams, the USMNT's captain at the 2022 World Cup, sat out Tuesday's debacle because of a foot injury that may yet rule him out of the Gold Cup. Take a dozen of the most seasoned players out of any national team, and the results might not be pretty. Then there's the fact that Pochettino came into this two-exhibition set — the U.S. lost 2-1 to Türkiye in Connecticut last Saturday — planning to use almost all the 26 players on his roster. The plan backfired, with the U.S. conceding all four goals during a 23-minute span midway through the first half. "It's my responsibility, the decision of the choice of the starting 11," Pochettino said afterward. "It went in the wrong direction from the beginning. We were never again in the game against a very good team like Switzerland, with experienced players, a team that is playing really well. [So] my first thought is not to blame the players, it's to blame ourselves. "That was my decision and that decision didn't work." Pochettino started 20 different players over the two contests, and he has now fielded 65 players in all since replacing Gregg Berhalter at the U.S. helm last September. "With more than 60 players, it's difficult to have the continuity or balance," Pochettino said. "We changed a lot, [both] the starting 11 and the roster." Just two players started both games, and Pochettino left the experienced likes of Chris Richards and Tim Ream on the bench in Music City, though Ream was among a number of subs who came on in the second half and helped shut down the Swiss over the final 45 minutes. But the young starters were thoroughly outclassed by a Swiss XI that included European standouts like Manchester City center back Manuel Akanji, Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Granit Xhaka and Borussia Dortmund keeper Gregor Kobel. Fullbacks Max Arfsten and Nathan Harriel were badly exposed defensively. It was the fourth consecutive loss for Pochettino's team, all of them at home. Coming on the heels of the regulars' last-place finish at March's Concacaf Nations League finals, the hope was that a few of the understudies would run with the rare opportunity to log big minutes in a tournament setting. Some have: Diego Luna continues to impress. Johnny Cardoso and Malik Tillman could still have a big Gold Cup. So too could the U.S. It just doesn't seem likely. Last year's 5-1 drubbing by Colombia foreshadowed a historic Copa América failure, as the Americans became the first host nation not to advance from group play in the 108-year history of that competition. Pochettino will no doubt field his strongest possible lineup in the Gold Cup. The U.S. will still be severely shorthanded. That doesn't bode well for their chances against competitive foes who'll be mostly intact. Two years ago, Panama eliminated a third-string USMNT in the Gold Cup semis. Three of those games were in the 2007 Copa América in Venezuela, where the Americans sent a "C" squad and paid a steep price, finishing last in their group with a negative-6 goal differential. Sure, a team of U.S. reserves famously shocked Mexico's regulars in the 2021 Gold Cup final. But that hasn't been the norm historically. It isn't even the ultimate goal. "After working one month together, some players that maybe you don't think have the possibility to be on the roster at the World Cup, could be," Pochettino said. "Maybe someone can surprise us. It's about opportunity. But you take a risk when you compete with this level of opponent." This roster is still capable of showing well at the Gold Cup, though. If they can come together as a team, find a lineup that clicks and catch lightning in a bottle, they remain capable of making a deep run. However the results go the rest of this summer, it's clear that Pochettino will need every possible weapon at his disposal a year from now to make the World Cup campaign a success. "The boys are so motivated to play in the Gold Cup," Pochettino said. "The feeling after Türkiye was good. We made nine changes and the combinations didn't work. That's it. "We can lose [this game], but we can win the Gold Cup and arrive at the World Cup and do well." We'll see. Healthier Panthers are nearing full strength in the Stanley Cup Final against the Oilers
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — The bumps and bruises and worse started to pile up midway through the Florida Panthers' third consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup Final. Matthew Tkachuk only returned for the playoff opener after sitting out the final two months of the regular season with the injury he suffered at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February and seems to still be gutting through it. Sam Reinhart and Niko Mikkola each missed time during the Eastern Conference final, and A.J. Greer's injury he tried playing through eventually sidelined him. 'It's very hard to win a Cup with unhealthy bodies,' Greer said. The Panthers found that out the hard way two years ago when they were the skating wounded. Tkachuk had a broken sternum, Aaron Ekblad had a broken foot, two shoulder dislocations and a torn oblique muscle, Radko Gudas had a high ankle sprain and they lost to Vegas in five games in the final. While the Edmonton Oilers looked to be in better shape going into this series with the notable exception of injured forward Zach Hyman, Florida has gotten healthier. Coach Paul Maurice said Reinhart is 'back to full health,' Tkachuk, Mikkola and Greer are making a difference and the defending champions are two wins away from hoisting the Cup for a second year in a row. 'It's always good to have a full team that's healthy," fourth-liner Tomas Nosek said after practice Wednesday. "It's been good so far, and hopefully it stays that way.' The Panthers will have their ideal lineup for Game 4 on Thursday night in Sunrise after that same group waxed Edmonton 6-1 earlier this week to take a 2-1 lead in the final. Other than do-it-all defenseman Seth Jones, no one played more than 23 minutes in Game 3. That balance, after so much overtime hockey early in what looked to be an evenly matched series, combined with an extra day between games, makes them rested and ready. 'We've been, I think, great the whole playoffs," center Anton Lundell said. 'It doesn't really matter when we play. It's always fun to play, so we don't really care. But obviously now we have had a couple days off, so it's fun to get the energy back and prepare." Reinhart scoring Monday night was his first goal since being out for two games in the Eastern Conference final, ending a drought that dated to the second round against Toronto. He had six shots in Game 2 and has been steadily progressing. 'I'm not worried about him,' Maurice said. 'I think his game is getting stronger — quite a bit stronger.' So is Tkachuk's, even if it's clear the tough winger is not moving as well as he does when 100%. But he had an assist and was noticeably better in Game 3, which Maurice called Tkachuk's best of the playoffs. 'It took him a while to build out,' Maurice said. 'The speed of the Carolina series was probably a really, really good thing. Some of these injuries I'm sure they're dealing with it, you can't condition them and rehab them at the same time. They need some time. And he was out for such a very long time that I would say the last month, but certainly the last three weeks, he's back to form now.' That spells trouble for the Oilers, playing without Hyman and with top-line forward Ryan Nugent-Hopkins dealing with an undisclosed injury that has him relegated him to game-time-decision uncertainty. Their longest-tenured player not being 100% is a major blow after Nugent-Hopkins, Connor McDavid and Hyman were such an effective trio getting to this point. Coach Kris Knoblauch foreshadowed a lineup change that may or may not be injury related. Either way, his team's depth is being tested. The same has been the case for the Panthers, who have used 22 skaters in the playoffs following 30 during the season. They've grown accustomed to shuffling players in and out and chugging along like some of the NHL's best teams have to do. 'With our depth this year, even when guys are injured or guys are out of the lineup, there's just so much depth on our team that guys can fill in seamlessly and it doesn't change our lineup that much,' Bennett said. "That's definitely a huge factor for us.' ___
