Buying a used hatchback? I've driven 47 used hatchback cars – this BMW 1 Series is by far a standout

BARGAIN BEEMER Buying a used hatchback? I've driven 47 used hatchback cars – this BMW 1 Series is by far a standout Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) OK, so 47 is an estimate, but I have driven a lot of hatchbacks, and the BMW Series 1 is a standout. The quintessential hatchback is, of course, the Golf, which in all its incarnations has delivered – but the BMW pips it, and I'll explain why. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 5 I'd always associated BMWs with committed middle managers driving company cars. A few minutes behind the wheel of the BMW Series 1 M Sport changed all that. I'm not going to say that the VW Golf has had its day (or make a joke that the current version of the car is as unfashionable as the sport, as that would be cruel). But the BMW Series 1 does everything you need a hatch to do – but better than the others. With people ditching the convertibles for a hatchback, read on to see why the BMW Series 1 is a standout choice for me. What is a hatchback? A hatchback is a car with a large rear door that opens to create a large boot space. Hatchback cars are flexible. You can typically carry 4 or more passengers in comfort. When you need extra carrying space, you can lower the back seats. (Make sure the passengers aren't in there first.) The VW Golf pretty much defined what a hatchback is and what it does, and – despite what we've written above – we still love it. Reviewers know it still does the business, but the Golf spawned a whole lot of imitators – some of which are now ready to challenge for the hatchback king's crown. Benefits of a hatchback Small, manoeuvrable, great handling Excellent visibility from the large rear window Sporty looks (especially souped-up variants, including GTI, M Sport, FR, etc.) Versatile, with space for 4 passengers and luggage Fold-down seats provide extra carrying capacity Perfect for families, city drivers or country dwellers BMW 1 Series: An overview When you're buying a hatchback, it's 50% heart and 50% head. It's got to look great and have the speed and performance you want. It's also got to be fuel efficient, reliable and – in these cash-strapped times – affordable. Let's work through the list. The BMW 1 Series looks, to me, fantastic. Looks are personal, so feel free to disagree. Parkers call it the best premium hatchback. The M Sport version goes above and beyond with 18' alloys, a rear spoiler and splitters, as well as a full leather interior and a beast of an engine. (Ticks box) It's hard to argue with performance. The majority of modern (post-2019) Series 1s are front-wheel drive with either a 3- or 4-cylinder engine. Front-wheel drive makes more space for luggage at the back without impacting the driving experience, which is impeccable. (Ticks box) In-car entertainment and tech is top-notch, as you'd expect on a premium BMW. (Ticks box) It's not a class leader (and real-life returns will vary on your driving style, condition, etc.), but you can expect around 40mpg from an older Series 1. (Ticks box) The BMW Series 1 was one of only two cars that achieved a 100% reliability rating from WhatCar?. (Ticks box) Affordable? Check out this round-up of used BMW Series 1 cars for sale. Used BMW 1 Series for sale Here are some of the BMW Series-1s for sale on Sun Motors that piqued our interest… Great value: BMW 1 SERIES 1.5 118i SE 5 Model: BMW Series 1 1.5 118i SE This 2018 BMW Series-1 isn't the cheapest on the market at £6,949, but represents something of a bargain. The mileage is low, with 65,000 miles half that of others on the market. The relatively low use shows up in the condition of the car, which is excellent. It's a well-presented car – and the good bits don't stop. The 118i SE model is a slightly more premium package (just below M Sport). The 138 bhp engine is a bit of a beast, but you'll still get almost 40mpg. (Check out the full specs on Parkers.) If we were looking for a great family runaround that would still turn a few heads, this would be a perfect choice. M Sport Monster: BMW 1 Series 1.5 118i M Sport 5 Model: BMW 1 Series 1.5 118i M Sport BMW M Sport is legendary, with better internal trim, external styling and engine. If you're buying a BMW, we all want that little badge, don't we? (Forget about the insurance premiums for a minute…) If comfort, acceleration and speed are important to you, then check out this BMW 1 Series 1.5 118i M Sport. Stylish? Absolutely. You'll get the better body kit, leather interior, and large alloys. It's a superb-looking car. Under the bonnet, the BMW has a turbocharged 1.5-litre engine that will fly when you put your foot to the floor. Thinking with the head, it's a good price for a relatively new BMW Series-1 with just 61,000 miles under its belt. Go on, you know you want it. Meticulously restored 90s Ford Escort driven by F1 star's dad hits auction for staggering 6-figure sum

The motor is going up for sale at the upcoming Silverstone Festival's 'Competition Cars' section and is expected to fetch over £350,000 Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A LEGENDARY rally car that's been meticulously restored is ready to hit auction - and could sell for a mighty six-figure sum. A 1997 Ford Escort WRC, which was once driven to victory by motorsport icon Carlos Sainz Sr. and his co-driver Luis Moya, is going up for sale and expected to fetch over £350,000. In the 1997 World Rally Championship season, the Escort WRC was driven by icons such as Sainz Sr., Juha Kankkunen and Armin Schwarz. Under Sainz, the Escort claimed victories at the Acropolis Rally in Greece and the Rally of Indonesia as he finished 3rd in that year's world championship. Sainz, Kankkunen and Schwarz, as well as part-timer Jarmo Kytolehto, also scored numerous podiums throughout the year, notably at the season opening Monte Carlo Rally and the British RAC Rally. After 1997, Sainz joined the Toyota Castrol Team for 1998 and came agonisingly close to clinching his third world title. However, his hopes were dashed when his Toyota Corolla WRC broke down on the final stage of the final rally, leaving him to settle for the runner-up spot. Sainz is perhaps best known today as the father of Formula 1 star Carlos Sainz Jr, who currently drives for the Williams F1 team - having also represented the likes of McLaren and Ferrari. Iconic Auctioneers, the auction house handling the sale of this 1990s machine, will put the Escort WRC under the hammer as part of the upcoming Silverstone Festival's 'Competition Cars' section. According to their listing, the car underwent a full engine rebuild in 2020 using correct-specification parts and has had minimal mileage since. Brilliantly, it retains its original 1997 season livery - the orange and white of gas and oil company Repsol - preserving its authentic rally heritage. Carlos Sainz Sr interview at the Dakar Rally 2025 With its rich history and association with some of the sport's greatest names, the Escort is a rare - and pricey - collector's item for rally enthusiasts. Even out of rally spec, the Ford Escort of the 1990s has become hugely sought after. Indeed, back in June, a 32-year-old Escort sold for a massive £105,750 - over five times its original price. The red 1993 Ford Escort RS Cosworth only had one owner who had done just 12,530 miles in it and was described as in exceptional 'time warp' condition throughout, as reported by Luxury Auto News. Ahead of the sale, the listing said: "Motorsport devotee John Phillips acquired the Escort as an early retirement present to himself and it was undoubtedly his 'pride and joy'. "It lived in its own garage from the day he bought it, never came out on wet days and was diligently maintained as and when required until his untimely passing in 2009 from which point the Escort remained interred in the same garage until recently removed. "The history file is comprehensive and includes the original grey leather document wallet, the full complement of books and manuals. "Its original tax disc holder, documentation relating to the 'Options' purchase scheme and the dealer handover sheet, plus of course various invoices, MoT Certificates and later tax discs. "In readiness for sale, the cambelt and tensioner has been renewed and an oil and filter change carried out. "However with minimal use over the last 15 or so years, we recommend that minor recommissioning may be required to ensure that everything is exactly as it should be. "A rare and desirable homologation special in simply remarkable condition."

Sales of popular convertibles plummet across UK as drivers opt for practical and safe SUVs

New sales of cabriolets have dropped by almost a tenth over the past couple of decades. There is so little demand for them that only 16 new car models offer a roof-down option. These symbols of motoring freedom have been replaced by safe and practical SUVs, which last year became Britain's best-selling car. It was all very different in the decadent 1990s when sales of convertibles took off, peaking at 94,484 in 2004. A racy Mazda MX5, BMW Z3 or VW Golf GTi Cabriolet were a common sight on the nation's roads. The glamour of Thelma & Louise's 1966 Ford Thunderbird or newly married Prince William and Kate waving to the crowds from their Aston Martin DB6 Volante have faded. Unwelcome luxury Last year, only 12,173 sales of new convertibles were registered here. Chris Knapman, from vehicle research and sales site CarGurus UK, said: 'Our latest annual Convertibles Report highlights more than just a drop in new car model selection. 9 Beatle John Lennon enjoying his Triumph Herald convertible in 1965 Credit: Getty 9 Elle Macpherson posing with the hybrid Fiat 500c 9 Barbie's Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in a Corvette Credit: Alamy 'It reflects a wider shift in the automotive landscape towards SUVs.' Rare Ford Escort Cabriolet 'Special Edition' goes under the hammer But we are not alone, as global sales of cabriolets were down 20 per cent over the past year. One of the problems is that manufacturers are focusing on electric cars to help governments hit Net Zero. At the moment, only two electric cars are available with an open top on this country's forecourts — the Fiat 500 and MG Cyberster The need to keep these vehicles energy efficient means that the juice used for lowering or raising the roof is an unwelcome luxury. At the moment, only two electric cars are available with an open top on this country's forecourts — the Fiat 500 and MG Cyberster. There is still, at least, a demand for cabriolets in the second-hand market. The latest figures from AutoTrader show that advert views for open-top cars hit 150,085 this summer, up from 133,329 in July 2023. And with well over one million convertibles registered in the UK, there is still a good chance of seeing motorists soaking up the sunshine with their shades on. 9 VW Golf GTi Cabriolet from 1985 Credit: Alamy 9 The Graduate's Dustin Hoffman in Alfa Romeo Duetto Spider Credit: Alamy 9 MG Cyberster is one of only two electric drop-tops on UK forecourts Credit: Supplied
