1.5 million UK citizens could be out of the disability benefit net soon, new bill proposes drastic changes in eligibility criteria

File photo: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Synopsis The Labour government's new welfare bill proposes significant changes to Personal Independence Payment (PIP), potentially impacting around 1.5 million Britons. Under the new guidelines, the 'daily living' element of the benefit effectively will get harder to claim after the eligibility criteria are tightened. All applicants will receive points according to their ability limitations for each activity. Around 3.7 million Britons are currently availing the benefits of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), which helps them with some extra money to take care of the cost incurred by living with an illness or disability. But that number is set to drastically come down as nearly 1.5 million people will soon lose the right to claim PIP benefits. ADVERTISEMENT The Labour government of Prime Minister Keir Starmer has introduced a new welfare bill revealing the full extent of the plans and roadmap to cut welfare for millions of disabled benefit claimants. This comes as the ruling party faces a crucial vote next month. An analysis by the Office for Budget Responsibility and verified by The Independent, the latest bill is likely to take away the eligibility of around 1.5 million people who currently claim the benefit of PIP. The watchdog further states that the 'behavioural response' can possibly reduce this to around 800,000 people. It, however, acknowledged that this is a 'highly uncertain judgement'.The 'Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill' precisely explains what will happen to PIP claimants if they end up losing their entitlement under the new for Work and Pensions (DWP) secretary Liz Kendall had in March 2025 announced the proposed changes. ADVERTISEMENT Under the new guidelines, the 'daily living' element of the benefit effectively will get harder to claim after the eligibility criteria are to what has been happening till now, assessors will ascertain if an applicant has limited ability to conduct day-to-day activities. The assessment will be based on how the applicants carry out a range of activities. They will be awarded points based on how limited their ability is. ADVERTISEMENT All applicants will receive points according to their ability limitations for each activity. They will require eight overall to secure this element of the benefit at the basic rate and 12 for the however, will be different from November 2026, as the applicants will need to score at least four points in a single daily living activity to be allowed to avail this element of the benefit. The eight required points can no longer be spread across activities. ADVERTISEMENT The changes planned by the Labour government have received strong backlash from charities and campaign groups. According to The Independent, over 100 Labour MPs are likely considering voting against the government on the plans. ADVERTISEMENT If someone availing themselves of the benefits of PIP loses entitlement, they will not witness any reduction in it without attending a reassessment which takes place every three years on being invited for reassessment, for which attendance is mandatory, applicants will be assessed as before. However, the new points-scoring system will now things go south and someone ends up losing their entitlement due to legislation changes, it will not stop being paid at that rate immediately. Payments will continue at that level for 13 weeks as a 'transitional cover', according to the government press release. This will not be paid if the recipient moves abroad or is reassessed and becomes entitled again. 'The Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill will provide 13 weeks of additional financial security to existing claimants affected by changes to the PIP daily living component, including those who lose eligibility to Carers Allowance and the carer's element of Universal Credit,' the release read. After these 13 weeks, payments for the daily living part of the benefit will stop. 12-hour work shift in IT? Karnataka govt faces backlash over proposal

The Karnataka government's proposal to amend existing labour laws and extend working hours in the IT, ITeS, and BPO sectors to 12 hours a day has triggered widespread criticism from employee unions and ignited debate across social media. In a meeting held on Wednesday by the state's Labour Department with industry stakeholders and trade unions, it was suggested that the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act be amended to permit a longer workday. At present, the Act limits work to a maximum of 10 hours per day, including overtime. The Karnataka State IT/ITES Employees Union (KITU) strongly opposed the proposal, describing it as a "form of modern-day slavery" and accusing the government of prioritising corporate profits over workers' rights. The union warned that enabling 12-hour shifts could lead to a two-shift system replacing the current three-shift system, potentially rendering one-third of the workforce redundant. 'This amendment will normalise inhuman conditions. It's not about productivity, it's about appeasing corporate bosses by turning workers into machines,' said KITU leader Suhas Adiga to news agency PTI after attending the meeting alongside fellow unionist Lenil Babu. KITU argued that such a move would erode work-life balance, worsen mental health issues, and further entrench job insecurity in the IT sector. Citing the State Emotional Wellbeing Report 2024, the union highlighted that 90 per cent of corporate employees under the age of 25 already suffer from anxiety. The union also pointed to global trends, noting that many countries are now recognising the negative effects of extended work hours and are enacting laws to establish the "right to disconnect" as a fundamental employee right. Narayan Murthy hours: Internet trolls 12-hour workday proposal As news of the government's proposal spread, social media erupted with memes and commentary. Many memes and jokes involved Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, who last year controversially advocated for a 70-hour workweek and criticised the concept of work-life balance. One user dubbed the proposed 12-hour shifts as "Narayana Murthy hours", another wrote, 'Narayana Murthy laughing in the corner after hearing that the Karnataka government plans to increase work hours to 12 hours per day for IT workers'. During the CNBC-TV18 Global Leadership Summit last year, Murthy had argued that as a developing country, India cannot afford the luxury of reduced working hours. He said that hard work and dedication were essential to achieve economic growth, remarking, 'We first have to get a life, then we can worry about work-life balance'. Despite the uproar, the Karnataka government has not issued an official clarification on the proposed changes or whether they will move forward with the legislative amendment. Meanwhile, KITU has called for collective resistance from all employees in the sector.

HDFC Mutual Fund raises stake in Glenmark Pharmaceuticals to 5.07%. Details here

HDFC Mutual Fund has increased its stake in Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, breaching the 5 percent ownership threshold, as per the company's regulatory filing on June 18, 2025. The move comes even as Glenmark disclosed recent regulatory scrutiny of its U.S. manufacturing facility by the United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA). According to the filing, HDFC Mutual Fund purchased an additional 3.57 lakh equity shares of Glenmark Pharma, raising its holding by 0.13 percent. Prior to the transaction, the fund house held 1.39 crore shares, or 4.94 percent of the company. Post acquisition, its total shareholding stands at 1.43 crore shares, which translates to a 5.07 percent stake in the pharmaceutical major. The stake increase is seen as a mark of confidence in the company's fundamentals and long-term growth potential, especially amid recent regulatory developments. As per the March 2025 shareholding pattern, Glenmark's promoters continue to hold a dominant 46.65 percent stake in the company. In parallel with the stake hike, Glenmark Pharmaceuticals also updated the stock exchanges about a recent Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) inspection conducted by the USFDA at its Monroe, North Carolina facility in the U.S. The inspection, which spanned from June 9 to June 17, 2025, culminated in the issuance of a Form 483 with five observations. The company was quick to clarify that the observations were procedural in nature and did not pertain to data integrity—an issue that often raises red flags in the pharmaceutical industry. In its exchange communication, Glenmark stated, 'The Company will work in close collaboration with the agency to address the observations and will respond to the USFDA within the stipulated timeline.' A Form 483 is typically issued when the FDA investigator identifies possible violations of the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic (FD&C) Act, but the absence of critical concerns such as data falsification is considered a relatively positive outcome. On the market front, Glenmark Pharma shares saw some volatility, falling by as much as 1.5 percent to touch a low of ₹ 1,634.55 on June 18. The stock is still around 11 percent below its 52-week high of ₹ 1,830.05, which it had touched in October 2025. However, it remains significantly above its 52-week low of ₹ 1,199.95, seen in June 2024. The recent price trajectory shows renewed investor interest, with the stock gaining 12.5 percent in June so far, following a 5.5 percent rise in May. This follows a choppy start to the year where the stock fell over 10 percent in April, surged 20.5 percent in March, and posted losses of 12 percent and 9.7 percent in February and January respectively.
