James Gunn Talks Future Superman Plans, Dropping Henry Cavill
In 2022, the mid-credits scene for Black Adam none too subtly declared Cavill's return and his team up (or fight) with Dwayne Johnson's thunderous antihero. Nothing came of that, however, because as Gunn explained in a recent Happy Sad Confused episode, it was 'never part of the equation.' As he told podcast host Josh Horowitz, Cavill's announcement that he was coming back came the same day Gunn and co-DC Studios head Peter Safran closed their deal. Gunn 'diplomatically' said someone at the time (read: Johnson) was making a play to lead DC's movie slate, and we all know how that shook out.
The entire situation was 'really unfortunate' to Cavill, said Gunn, who added he and Gunn later spoke with the actor to explain things, and they let him announce the bad news through his own channels as he requested. Despite how things shook out, Gunn stressed he'd be more than happy to bring Cavill into his DC universe as another character in 'something'—but if there's anything specific he thinks Cavill is perfect for, Gunn is keeping his mouth shut.
Likewise, he remains cagey on the next DC project he's writing, which he promises will once again involve David Corenswet's Superman. When pressed, Gunn stressed the hero is 'very important' to the story, but it's not a sequel or a teamup with Batman. Said project will be revealed 'sooner rather than later,' so that's something! Just don't expect it in the next immediate week, since DC's not bringing any movies with them to San Diego Comic-Con.

We also had a chance to catch up with Safdie, who's next project, 'The Smashing Machine,' releases in theaters on October 3 from A24. The biopic follows UFC legend Mark Kerr, led by Dwayne Johnson. 'It was one of the most incredible things to witness,' Safdie told IndieWire of Johnson's unrecognizable transformation. 'He was just so committed and amazing,' he continued. 'To see him walking amongst, like, 400 people, and everybody being like, 'When's Dwayne going to get here?' He's just walking amongst everybody. Everything about him changed. It was really, really cool.' 'You really understand the fears, the love, the sadness, the happiness,' Safdie previously said of just how great Johnson is. 'If somebody's open to doing that and talking about that stuff, then they're going to be able to give a great performance. Because of how physically strong he is, I don't know if a lot of people give him that opportunity.' 'Happy Gilmore 2' is directed by Kyle Newacheck ('Workaholics,' 'What We Do in the Shadows'), who also previously helmed Sandler's 2019 film 'Murder Mystery.' ‘Happy Face' Canceled at Paramount+ After One Season
Robert and Michelle King's crime thriller 'Happy Face' has been canceled at Paramount+ after just one season, Variety has confirmed. The news comes roughly two months after 'Happy Face' wrapped Season 1 on May 1. The show tells the real story of Melissa Moore, who in 1995, learned that her father, Keith Hunter Jesperson, was the then-infamous Happy Face Killer. The series is based on the 'Happy Face' podcast from iHeartPodcasts as well as Moore's autobiography 'Shattered Silence,' which was co-written by M. Bridget Cook. ‘The Late Show With Stephen Colbert' Attracts Protesters; More Planned This Week
The anger over CBS' decision to shutter The Late Show with Stephen Colbert continues: On Monday, protesters gathered outside the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City to shout 'Colbert Stays! Trump Must Go!' Signs like 'I Support Colbert' were also waved by a group that reportedly calls itself Refuse Fascism. The protest comes after CBS revealed last week that The Late Show With Stephen Colbert will end its run in May.
