Flashing LED mouthguards to be used in Women's Rugby World Cup 2025

The LED gumshields will flash red when a player experiences a head impact that passes a threshold determined by World Rugby.
'We are absolutely delighted to be introducing the LED into the mouthguard,' Dr Lindsay Starling, science and medical manager at World Rugby said.
'Previously, throughout 2024, most of the smart mouthguards you will have seen players wearing are white.
'Mouthguards players are wearing now are clear, and so on the side, you can see the LED board, the accelerometer and the gyroscope.
'When a player sustains an impact that results in an alert being triggered, not only is that alert being sent by Bluetooth to the match doctor on the side of the field, but the LED board on the side of the mouthguard flashes red.
'This will now be formally implemented as part of the HIA protocol in the Women's Rugby World Cup and at every tournament that makes use of smart mouthguards starting after the Women's Rugby World Cup.
'The reason for this is to create awareness; now everybody will be able to tell when a player has sustained a significant head impact during the match such that it has triggered an alert.'
It's already been a summer to remember...

A head impact that results in 65Gs for women and 75Gs for men, which relates to the linear movement of the head, and 4500 radians per second for both men and women, which is the speed of rotation, triggers an alert.
World Rugby are keen to stress the mouthguards do not detect concussion, with some knocks below the threshold for an alert leading to concussion, while some players who experience an impact that triggers an alert will pass a Head Injury Assessment.
The women's game has led the way in terms of implementation around smart mouthguards and concussion protocols.
The instrumented gumshields were first formally used at the 2022 World Cup, while WXV was the first tournament to implement new HIA protocols.
With disparity between the professionalism of various unions' set-ups in the women's game, World Rugby's chief medical officer Professor Éanna Falvey hopes the new protocols can have a trickle-down effect.
He said: 'Since I have been in this role, we have moved that everything we invest in the men's game, we invest in the women's game in the same way.
'That is not always particularly easy because for some of the work we do, we need competitions to have the HIA process in place, so something like the World Cup for us is a real banner event where we have a high level of teams.
'We have not just the best teams in the world, but we have teams from developing countries in the sport. This is great exposure where we hope that having played at level, that can trickle back into their own country and their union can work hard to get the HIA process in place for them.'
With more than 330,000 tickets already sold, and prices starting at just £5 for children and £10 for adults, fans are encouraged to secure their tickets now via tickets.rugbyworldcup.com

Pep Guardiola could be about to leave new Man City signing with serious concerns

James Trafford broke Championship records between the sticks for Burnley last season and returned to Manchester City hoping to be their long-term No.1 - now a formidable Italian problem could destroy his long-term plans James Trafford didn't walk into Manchester City this summer expecting to oust Ederson straight away. But he must have fancied his chances to get the No.1 shirt in the very near future from the Brazilian who is constantly linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium for the last 12 months. ‌ The Premier League club have yet to receive any contact for their current No.1. But Ederson's name is not often far from the Saudi Arabia conversation while Galatasaray are also interested in him. ‌ Yet now it has emerged that should a late bid come in for Ederson then City will swoop for PSG outcast Gianluigi Donnarumma - that's despite signing Trafford this summer. That's not good news for the England hopeful in a World Cup year. That's for sure. ‌ City brought in former player Trafford from Burnley in a £31m deal after they triggered a clause where they could match Newcastle's offer. They will pay £27m because they had a sell-on clause included in the deal when they sold Trafford to Burnley. Yet now the England international will find himself in a strange position should City sign another goalkeeper. There was a belief that Trafford would be understudy to 31-year-old Ederson this season before taking over next summer should the Brazilian move on. But it appears now City will be signing Donnarumma if they can find a buyer for their current No.1. Italy keeper Donnarumma is just 26 and at the peak of his powers. That would seem like bad news for Trafford, who at 22 will want to be playing. Donnarumma is available this summer after PSG boss Luis Enrique ousted him from his first-team squad despite his Champions League heroics last season. The French giants have spent over £40m on signing Lucas Chevalier from Lille as their new No.1 and Donnarumma has been exiled. The keeper has had an ambition to play in the Premier League and it appears now City would be his likeliest destination if he moves to England. Manchester United have been linked but they have currently no plans to enter into the race for his signature. Despite being booted out of the first-team squad, PSG will want around £30m to sell the Italian No.1 in the next couple of weeks. The keeper is understood to be stunned by PSG's actions. That's despite having just one year left on his current contract and no sign of agreeing a new deal for the last number of months. ‌ He was one of their star performers as they beat Liverpool, Arsenal and Inter Milan on their way to European glory last season. Those around him believe his stats are also much better than the replacement PSG have bought. That also means he wouldn't be coming to City to sit on the bench and where does that leave Trafford? ‌ Being second choice this season to the long-standing No.1 would be tolerable with the knowledge that Ederson is seemingly itching to get a move soon. But he should be seriously concerned if Pep Guardiola goes out and brings in a high-profile keeper just weeks after returning to the club he came through the academy at.

Steven Naismith has returned to football as the former Hearts and Everton man joins Steve Clarke's Scotland coaching staff for a second time. The former forward has been out of frontline football since depaerting his post as Tynecastle head coach last year. He has since embarked on various punditry opportunities but has now been accepted a chance to replace John Carver in the Scotland set up after the ex Newcastle United man's switch to Polish outfit Lechia Gdansk. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Naismith started his playing career at Kilmarnock before featuring for Rangers, Everton and Norwich City before a move back to Scotland where he hung up his boots. He started coaching within the Jambos academy and moved his way up to becoming head coach permanently in 2023. Naismith previously joined the Scotland coaching staff in 2021 prior to his leading role at Tynecastle. Steven Naismith returns to Scotland Andrew Hughes, Leicester City's set-piece coach, has moved into that role with the national team in two new additions to Clarke's backroom. The head coach said: 'I am delighted to have Steven and Andrew with us for the World Cup qualifying campaign. Steven has been with us before and brings a real complementary skill set to myself and Alan Irvine. 'He has had opportunities to return to full-time club football, so it says a lot for his pride in the national team that he has agreed to join up with us again. I was really impressed by a number of potential candidates we'd spoken to when John left to continue at Lechia Gdansk but the fact we've worked together before makes for a seamless transition. 'I am also really pleased to have Andrew with us. He has coached in a variety of roles since retiring from playing but has excelled as set-piece coach at Norwich City and now Leicester City and I am grateful to Marti Cifuentes for allowing Andrew to work with us during the international windows.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Why Steven Naismith has joined Scotland coaching staff Naismith said: 'I am really excited to be rejoining the Scotland men's national team coaching staff under Steve. When I left Hearts, I made a point of not jumping straight back in at the first offer but to reflect on my coaching experiences and wait for something that really excited me. 'When I first spoke to Steve about the possibility of coming back it was a no-brainer: I loved playing for my country, I've loved being part of the coaching team previously and I can't wait to help support the mission to take Scotland to a World Cup again.' Hughes added: 'From the moment I got the call from Steve I have felt extremely honoured to be invited to work with the Scotland men's national team. My father is Scottish and as well as this being a proud moment for me and my family, it is a hugely exciting time as a coach to be part of a World Cup qualifying campaign, with such a talented squad, following back-to-back Euro qualifications. I can't wait to get started.'

Steven Naismith named as John Carver Scotland replacement

The former Heart of Midlothian manager replaces the departing John Carver, who left the role earlier this year after becoming the boss of Lechia Gdansk in Poland. Steve Clarke has appointed Naismith, who was previously a coach with the national team during the manager's six-year tenure. Naisy played under Clarke too, and made 51 appearances in total for Scotland. He has been out of work since he was sacked by Hearts last September, although was interviewed for the Kilmarnock job when Stuart Kettlewell was appointed. Leicester City set-piece coach Andrew Hughes has also been added to Scotland's ranks, where he will carry out the same position with the national team. Both appointments come just a month before World Cup qualifying gets underway, with games against Denmark and Belarus. "I am delighted to have Steven and Andrew with us for the World Cup qualifying campaign," said Clarke. "Steven has been with us before and brings a real complementary skill set to myself and Alan Irvine. "He has had opportunities to return to full-time club football, so it says a lot for his pride in the national team that he has agreed to join up with us again. I was really impressed by a number of potential candidates we'd spoken to when John left to continue at Lechia Gdansk but the fact we've worked together before makes for a seamless transition.
