Joan Didion once famously declared that 'writers are always selling someone out' – but what about publishers?
Notes to John, a posthumous publication from Didion's archive, is a collection of typewritten journal entries discovered in her study shortly after her death in 2021. The entries, which begin in December 1999, are meticulous transcriptions of sessions with her psychiatrist, 'an old-fashioned Freudian' who Didion conveys here with such detail I wondered if she'd brought a dictaphone to therapy.
The book is loosely addressed to her husband, John Gregory Dunne, and feels more like Didion's own private notes to self, an attempt to clarify the bewildering circumstances they describe. The preface contains a pre-emptive caveat that because Dunne himself was present for one of the sessions, Didion must have intended a further audience. I'm not sure I'm convinced.
The entries cover Didion's troubled relationship with her adopted daughter, Quintana, focusing almost entirely on how Quintana's struggle with alcoholism caused paralysing rifts between them. It's undeniably affecting, and Didion's swerves between fear and frustration will be acutely familiar to anyone who's lived with a loved one's addiction.

Several harrowing revelations ensue – an anecdote about a violent lover in her youth is casually recalled as 'an example of romantic degradation'. Later, with the startling disclosure that she secretly received treatment for breast cancer, she writes 'I was telling no one. I even did the radiation on 168th Street so I wouldn't run into people I knew.'
Details such as this make me uneasy to call this publication a book. Didion's diary remained in a filing cabinet for 20 years before she died – if she had wanted it published she probably would have done so herself. It's hard not to read it now as the result of the same kind of opportunism Didion lambasted the publishing industry for while she was alive. After the posthumous appearance of an unfinished Hemingway book, she once wrote, 'This is a man to whom words mattered ... His wish to be survived by only the words he determined fit for publication would have seemed clear enough.'
Notes to John is full of the kind of clear-eyed detail that made Joan Didion her name. Obviously this is a woman to whom words mattered – I'm just not sure we should be reading these ones.

BBC denies cutting out Irish language lyrics from new CMAT song after singer criticises ‘crazy edit'
Irish singer CMAT has criticised the cutting of Irish language lyrics of her new song 'EURO-COUNTRY' on BBC Radio, describing it as 'a crazy edit'. The song was released yesterday and debuted on BBC Radio 1 at about 6pm. The first 45 seconds of the nearly five minute song were cut and featured lyrics in Irish. 'It was not my decision to have the Irish language edited out of the first ever play of EURO-COUNTRY on radio,' CMAT said. 'I don't know if it was a mistake or what happened, but that was not my decision. I don't know who edited it out – that was crazy of them.' READ MORE Taking to social media, the Meath-born singer, whose full name is Ciara Mary-Alice Thompson, said BBC representatives were in contact with her yesterday 'and said that they are going to play the Irish language intro, the full version of EURO-COUNTRY tomorrow to make up for it'. 'Not my decision, but they're fixing it,' she said. In a response to The Irish Times, a BBC spokesperson said: 'BBC Radio 1 did not edit the Irish language from this single.' They said the station played the radio version of the song 'that was supplied by the record label'. The added that the station 'has already played the full version that includes the Irish language intro today ... and it will be played again' on two shows later today. The lyrics at the start of the song read: 'Cad is gá dom a dhéanamh mura bhfuil mé ag bualadh leat? / Tá ceann folamh agam, agus peastantach nua / Eirím níos dofheicthe, is tú imithe ó mo shoal / Níl aon rud fágtha sa scátháin / An mbeidh mé álainn mhaol?' This translates in English to: 'What am I to do if I'm not meeting you? / I have an empty head, and a new personality / I become more invisible, you're gone from my life / There's nothing left in the mirror / Will I be beautiful bald?' The song's bridge, which references the spike in suicides after the 2008 financial crash, was also edited out of the radio broadcast. 'All the big boys / All the Berties / All the envelopes, yeah they hurt me,' she sings in reference to scandal surrounding former taoiseach Bertie Ahern. 'I was 12 when the das started killing themselves all around me,' she continues in the song's bridge. 'They also did a crazy editing out of [that line], which I guess is more understandable,' CMAT said on social media.. In an interview with The Irish Times last month, she explained that 'everyone else on the estate we lived in worked in construction, or in shops, and they all lost their jobs. Everyone became unemployed' in the aftermath of the crash. 'Then, in the village I grew up in, there was a year or 18 months where loads of the people I went to school with, their dads started killing themselves because they'd lost everything in the crash,' she said.

D-Block Europe review: Hip-hop act turns Marquee into Cork club night
It was a semblance of a club night at Live at the Marquee on Tuesday as thousands descended onto the Marina to welcome one half of D-Block Europe to the Cork City stage. What is the only hip-hop act of a long line of big top acts, Young Adz performed some of the London-based duo's top hit singles without Dirtbike LB. Their song Prada was also nominated for a Brit award for Song of the Year last year. D-Block Europe or DBE have been around since 2010, after signing a deal with New York rapper Jadakiss. D-Block Europe have since raked in some 5bn streams across various global platforms and are known for creating catchy tunes using Autotune and trap beats about sex, drug dealing, and owning luxury items. Their Live at the Marquee concert is the latest in their tour, which has seen a surprise sell-out of both nights. A trove of young teenagers dominated the audience as they snaked their way into the blue and yellow tent under pouring rain and floods. Neon coloured dresses of pink and orange exploded at the venue; knee high boots and tan limbs were exposed as sweaty bodies jumped up and down under the tent. Young lads in tracksuits and hats of various colours eagerly made their way to find the best spot in the standing area, ready to launch themselves into one of the many mosh pits that would maybe open. Young Adz arrived on stage shortly after 9.30pm and performed to the crowd with magnetic energy who were ready to party. Strobe lights of white, blue, and green dancing in the air as the deep bass of their songs echoes across the tent. "You alright, Cork?", Young Adz said after performing their opening tune Darling as he apologised to say that DBE's other half, Dirtbike LB, was not here. This was very similar to their last Irish performance where Young Adz was visibly absent from Longitude's main stage last year. Powering through most of the set list, Young Adz gave it his all to get the crowd into a momentum, while blaring some familiar favourites including Prada, Ferrari Horses, and Pakistan. DBE will return for a second night at the Marquee on Wednesday with the question of whether it will once again be a one man show or a duo. Kingfishr will then return for another sold-out night on Thursday. Summer gigs at the big top will then conclude this weekend with three nights of Michael McIntyre and his new show MACNIFICENT! Ozzy Osbourne , who has died at the age of 76 , was best known as the frontman of Black Sabbath. At the forefront of the heavy metal scene, Osbourne had a theatrical stage presence, once biting off the head of a bat and styling himself as the Prince of Darkness.
