Tourism minister urges collective action to clock 20 million FTAs
Shekhawat, who was speaking at the two-day national conclave organised by the Federation of Associations of Indian Tourism and Hospitality (FAITH) in New Delhi, added that India's goal should be to achieve 20 million foreign tourist arrivals (FTAs) in the country.
'There is an urgent need to think about taking FTAs to the 20 million milestone and that is not just the work of the government. Members of the hospitality sector, too, are working towards achieving this goal,' Shekhawat said.
'We have also developed an action plan to align different line ministries over the next one year and take a whole-of-the-government approach to ensure we are among the top 10 positions in the World Economic Forum's Travel and Tourism Development Index (TTDI). Work on this is going on in a mission mode to ensure we are able to succeed on this front in the coming five years,' he added.
Over the three years, India moved up to the 39th position in 2024 from 54th position on the World Economic Forum's TTDI.
'Only infrastructure growth cannot help us achieve this goal. There is a need to work on creating new experience offerings, increase branded room inventory, amp up basic amenities, and develop the industry's human resource,' he further said.
India saw nearly 10 million FTAs in 2024. According to the Ministry of Tourism, FTAs stood at 2.6 million in the January-March quarter this year, marginally lower than 2.9 million in the same period last year.

Among the largest economies, China has achieved its best-ever position at 12th, driven by strong innovation and the highest clean energy acquisition volumes in the world. The US ranks 17th due to its solid security measures and improvements in sustainability. However, it has slipped down to its previous year's position – 63rd in the 2024 Global Energy Transition Index but made notable strides in reducing CH4 emissions and boosting energy efficiency and clean energy investment capability this year. To boost its ranking, it can improvement in grid reliability, rural energy access, and reduced reliance on imported energy could boost energy security and equity. Investment in infrastructure and renewable sources could also speed up this transition.

FAITH Conclave 2025 charts unified roadmap for $3 trillion Indian tourism economy by 2047
The Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism & Hospitality (FAITH) concluded its two-day FAITH Conclave 2025 in New Delhi which saw external affairs minister Dr. S. Jaishankar talking about positioning tourism as a 'strategic pillar' of India's diplomacy, alongside trade and technology, while tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat stressed on raising tourism's GDP share from 6% to 10% through skilled manpower, sustainability, and cultural preservation. Puneet Chhatwal, FAITH chairperson, underlined tourism's role as India's soft power and the world's leading job creator. On day two, Peter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo and Chair-elect of IATA, highlighted aviation's role in tourism growth. He outlined three enablers—visa reforms, ease of travel, and targeted global promotion—and announced IndiGo's expansion to over 50 international destinations with wide-body Airbus A350s. Representing IATO, FHRAI, HAI, ADTOI, ATOAI, ICPB, IHHA, ITTA, TAAI, TAFI, and AIRDA, FAITH said it reaffirmed its dedication to a whole-of-nation approach for tourism growth, integrating central and state policies, private partnerships, and community participation. The industry body said a joint recommendations document will be submitted to the prime minister and the Ministry of Tourism following the event. 'This is India's century,' said Rajiv Mehra, general secretary, FAITH. 'Achieving our tourism potential requires shared vision, coordinated action, and industry accountability.'

The Hotel Association of India (HAI), an apex body representing the Indian hospitality industry, has unveiled a landmark initiative — an industry-first, structured mentorship platform designed exclusively for the hotel sector.
