The Tragically Hip's songs inspire jukebox musical, set for 2026 Hamilton debut

Yahoo20-02-2025

TORONTO — The Tragically Hip's songbook is getting the jukebox musical treatment under the guidance of "Come From Away" producer Michael Rubinoff.
Named after a Hip song, the show dubbed "It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken" promises to draw on the band's deep catalogue of Canadian classics, including lyrics by late frontman Gord Downie.
Rubinoff will be assisted by fellow producers David and Hannah Mirvish.
The book is written by Brian Hill, who worked on the Broadway musical "The Story of My Life," and Ahmed Moneka, a nominee at this year's Juno Awards for global music album.
Producers say the musical will premiere at Hamilton's Theatre Aquarius next year with plans to further develop the project at Toronto Metropolitan University's theatre school.
They did not provide details about the storyline.
Rubinoff said in a statement that the Hip musical underwent a two-week workshop last fall, culminating in a half-hour performance of selections for a private audience that included members of the Kingston, Ont. band.
An open casting call is set for March 9 at the Creative School Chrysalis at Toronto Metropolitan University, which Rubinoff emphasized will seek exceptional singers of rock, folk and country music who have "a unique sound and strong acting chops."
The song "It's a Good Life If You Don't Weaken" appeared on the Hip's 2002 album "In Violet Light."

Water from Your Eyes Announce New Album It's a Beautiful Place, Reveal 2025 Tour Dates

The post Water from Your Eyes Announce New Album It's a Beautiful Place, Reveal 2025 Tour Dates appeared first on Consequence. Water from Your Eyes are back to announce a new album, It's a Beautiful Place, out on August 22nd via Matador. They've also confirmed a major 2025 North American tour set for this fall, and revealed the first single off It's a Beautiful Place: 'Life Signs.' The former CoSigns, comprised of songwriters Rachel Brown and Nate Amos, were inspired by turn-of-the-millennial sonics, outer space, existentialism, and writing for their newly-fitted live band on It's a Beautiful Place. 'It ended up being about time, dinosaurs and space,' Amos said of the new album in a press release. 'We wanted to present a wide range of styles in a way that acknowledges everything's just a tiny blip.' Get Water from Your Eyes Tickets Here They'll be supporting It's a Beautiful Place with a sprawling North American tour this fall, which kicks off in Philadelphia on September 22nd. They'll make their way through cities like Washington D.C., Atlanta, Nashville, Chicago, Montreal, New York, Austin, Los Angeles, Seattle, Vancouver, and many more; they'll conclude the run on November 7th in Denver before heading off to Europe. Her New Knife, Winter, and Dutch Interior will provide support throughout the trek. See their full list of tour dates below. Tickets for Water From Your Eyes' 2025 tour will first be available via an artist pre-sale beginning on Wednesday, June 4th at 12:00 p.m. local time; fans can sign up for pre-sale access to their desired show date(s) on Water From Your Eyes' official website. A Live Nation pre-sale is also available for select dates beginning on Wednesday, June 4th at 12:00 p.m. local time (use code TREBLE). Tickets go on-sale for the general public on Friday, June 6th at 10:00 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster as well as the band's official website. 'Life Signs' serves as the lead single for It's a Beautiful Place and it's a moody, guitar-forward introduction to the album's expansive sound. Cycling between slightly threatening and resigned, Amos brings palm-muted arpeggios and grungy blasts of guitar while Brown narrates deadpanned, surrealist verses. The song also arrives with a music video inspired by several eras of television, and feature Amos and Brown in a variety of vintage sets and situations. Check out 'Life Signs' below. Since releasing their lauded 2023 album Everyone's Crushed, Brown and Amos have been busy; they toured frequently, embarking on a large slate of dates opening for their labelmates Interpol (including their performance in Mexico City, which drew 160,000 attendees) and a co-headlining run with Squid. They also resurfaced for a covers EP in 2024. Meanwhile, they both released solo albums: Brown shared an EP under the moniker thanks for coming, while Amos released an acclaimed debut album Box For Buddy, Box For Star last year as This Is Lorelei. Heather Hiscox stepping down from 'CBC Morning Live' this fall

TORONTO — CBC News Network veteran Heather Hiscox is retiring and will step down as host of "CBC Morning Live" this fall. The longtime anchor for live, breaking news coverage made the announcement this morning as the public broadcaster detailed upcoming programming plans. Hiscox says she's deeply grateful to CBC News for the opportunity to connect with Canadians each morning. Her final day will be in front of a live audience Nov. 6, also her 20th anniversary as host of the 6 a.m. show that runs for four hours. Before she leaves, CBC says Hiscox will take "CBC Morning Live" on the road this fall to speak to Canadians directly about their perspectives on the country. During Hiscox's tenure on the desk she presented major news events including the Humboldt, Sask., bus crash; the Quebec City mosque shooting; the funerals of Pope Francis and Queen Elizabeth II and 10 Olympic Games. "As I contemplate this final chapter, I feel immense pride in what we've created as a morning team," Hiscox said Wednesday in a release. "Most of all, I am forever indebted to Canadians — their support has sustained me, and earning and keeping their trust has been the most rewarding achievement of my career." Hiscox began her broadcasting career in 1982 at a radio station in her hometown of Owen Sound, Ont., and moved into television in 1991. Her CBC roles included serving as a correspondent for "The National" and working out of CBC bureaus in Washington, D.C., and London, U.K. This report by The Canadian Press was first published June 4, 2025.
