MEAC Preseason Poll Shows Razor-Thin Race for 2025 Title
Defending champions South Carolina State were picked to repeat. The Bulldogs earned 63 points and five first-place votes in the coaches and SIDs poll. But don't expect them to cruise. North Carolina Central - coming off a strong campaign of its own - was right on their heels with 61 points and four first-place nods.
Morgan State, Norfolk State, Howard, and Delaware State rounded out the predicted order of finish. With each school earning at least one first-place vote, it's a testament to how wide open this year's MEAC title race could be.
However, when it comes to individual honors, Morgan State stole the show.
Morgan State sophomore running back Jason Collins Jr. was named the 2025 MEAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. The Washington, D.C., native torched defenses in 2024 with 634 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, and showed he wasn't just a one-dimensional back, adding 17 catches for 143 receiving yards.
His signature moment? A 152-yard performance against Delaware State, highlighted by a 75-yard touchdown run that left defenders in the dust. He finished fifth in the MEAC in rushing and was a finalist for the Jerry Rice Award, given to the FCS's top freshman. Now, he's set to build on that start in 2025.
On the other side, Morgan's veteran linebacker Erick Hunter earned Preseason Defensive Player of the Year honors. After missing most of 2024, he returned with authority in the final two games, including a disruptive outing against Howard. Already ninth on Morgan's all-time tackles list (196), Hunter's résumé speaks volumes. He was the 2023 BOXTOROW Impact Player of the Year, an FCS All-American, and a Buck Buchanan Award finalist. His leadership could be the x-factor in a Morgan State title run.
North Carolina Central led all programs with eight student-athletes named to the All-MEAC First Team. The Eagles are evenly balanced across offense and defense. That includes quarterback Walker Harris, tight end Luke Bracey, and offensive lineman Noah McKinney, each expected to anchor a high-octane Eagles offense.
Morgan State wasn't far behind with six first-teamers. Defensive lineman Dashawn Fields, a sophomore looking to make a major leap, and return specialist Malique Leatherbury, who also earned second-team wide receiver honors.
Other standouts include Norfolk State wideout Kam'Ryn Thomas, Howard's defensive lineman duo of Noah Miles and Ishaun Abdul-Ali, and Delaware State's relentless pass rusher Marquise Brunson.
Circle your calendars: the MEAC season officially begins on Saturday, August 23, when North Carolina Central faces Southern University in the 2025 MEAC/SWAC Challenge at Center Parc Stadium in Atlanta. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. on ABC - prime time for a prime HBCU football showcase.
With talent stacked across every roster, a wide-open race for the title, and young stars ready to ascend, the MEAC's 2025 season is shaping up to be one of the most competitive and compelling in HBCU football.

An HBCU alumna saw herself competing against the best in the track & field circuit, even beating out Olympian Sha'Carri Richardson. North Carolina A&T alumna Kayla White set a personal best of 10.89 to win her heat, surpassing Sha'Carri Richardson's time of 11.07. Richardson delivered her strongest performance of the season, but White ultimately emerged as the faster competitor in their latest race. Melissa Jefferson-Wooden claimed victory in the race, setting a world-leading time of 10.65 seconds. But, the fact that White wasn't far off from Wooden and bested Richardson's time further proves her immense talent and her unique place in the sport with her HBCU background. White competed in track & field for the Aggies from 2015-2019. A former dancer, she made a definitive impact in her college career that etched her in the history of both the institution and the MEAC. White had a stellar career, securing 17 MEAC indoor and outdoor sprint and hurdle titles. She dominated the 60-meter and 100-meter hurdles, winning both events all four years with the Aggies. White also claimed multiple 4×100 relay titles and swept the 100 and 200-meter titles in her junior and senior seasons. She earned second place in the 60-meter hurdles at the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships and also secured a runner-up finish in the NCAA Outdoor 100-meter final. In a post-race interview with Citius Mag, White shared her thoughts on both her performance and how the event unfolded. 'I knew it was a long time coming. My coach wanted me to come out here and drop a bomb and just, you know, run fast [because] I've been stuck in the same cycle since the season started running 11.1, 11.0. So, you know, for this first round, he wanted me to get my body ready for tomorrow, you know, to go those two rounds and make the team. 'I was happy to see that 10.8 baby because I ain't PR since 2019. So you know I'm still developing still becoming a great athlete. So that's just exciting for me to see.' Sha'Carri Richardson runs SB, but HBCU star wins race
Sha'Carri Richardson ran a season's best in the USATF 100m on Friday - but a former HBCU star outshined her in the White, a national champion at North Carolina A&T, ran a personal-best 10.89 to win her heat. She topped Sha'Carri Richardson's time of 11.07 in the process. Kayla White dominates at HBCU For her career, White won 17 MEAC indoor and outdoor sprint and hurdle titles at HBCU track factory North Carolina A&T from 2016 to Miami, Florida native secured her first career win at the 2016 MEAC Indoor Championships. She claimed the 60-meter hurdles title in 8.39 seconds. That spring, she followed up with an outdoor title in the 100-meter hurdles and added a win in the 4×100 relay. Eventually, White won the MEAC 60-meter hurdles and the 100-meter hurdles titles in each of her four years with the Aggies. In total, she added MEAC 4×100 relay titles in 2017, 2018, and 2019. She also swept the 100 and 200-meter titles during her junior and senior seasons. At the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships, she finished second in the 60-meter hurdles. She also placed second in the NCAA Outdoor 100-meter final. White vs. Richardson: A Rivalry in the Making White has faced Sha'Carri Richardson multiple times as a pro. She defeated the Olympic gold medalist in the 200 meters at the inaugural Botswana Grand Prix on April 29, 2023. While there's no doubt more battles are ahead, White came out on top in their latest showdown - winning the 100m on Friday. 30 key Miami Hurricanes for 2025 season: CharMar Brown adds key running back depth
The Miami Hurricanes kick off the 2025 season on Aug. 31 with a marquee matchup against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Hard Rock Stadium (7:30 p.m., ABC). With the calendar officially flipped to August, the Miami Herald is counting down 30 of the most important players on the Hurricanes' roster, one per day leading up to the season opener, to provide a closer look at the team heading into coach Mario Cristobal's fourth season. To kick things off, we will take a look at player No. 30 on our list, CharMar Brown. Position: Running back. Hometown: Omaha, Nebraska. Year: Redshirt sophomore. How he got to Miami: 2025 transfer (North Dakota State University). Key stats: 1,181 rushing yards, 15 touchdowns, 4.8 yards per rush as a redshirt freshman at NDSU. In summary: CharMar Brown, who also goes by 'Marty,' was dominant at the Football Championship Subdivision level as a redshirt freshman. He won the Jerry Rice Award as the top FCS freshman and for good reason. He had four 100-yard games and three multitouchdown games, including a pair of three-touchdown efforts. He will have to adjust to Power 4 football, but he'll be supported in a backfield that also has a pair of proven runners in Mark Fletcher Jr. and Jordan Lyle. 'I just stay patient and trust my teammates and trust the coaching staff so that when my opportunity comes I capitalize on everything that comes my way.' - CharMar Brown on his success at NDSU.
