Patrick Kielty's grand gesture that won over Cat Deeley as couple announce split

RTÉ Late Late Show host Patrick Kielty and British TV presenter Cat Deeley shocked fans on Tuesday as they announced their separation after more than a decade of marriage.
The couple, who share two children, released a joint statement on Tuesday confirming the sad news.
"We have taken the decision to end our marriage and are now separated," they said. "There is no other party involved.
"We will continue to be united as loving parents to our children and would therefore kindly ask for our family's privacy to be respected. There will be no further comment."
Kielty and Deeley first met in 2002 while they hosted BBC talent show Fame Academy, however, the pair's relationship remained purely platonic until a grand romantic gesture from the Irish comedian eventually swept Deeley off her feet. Cat Deeley and Patrick Kielty wed in 2012 (Image: Instagram)
During an appearance on RTE's Late Late Show in 2020, Deeley revealed the sweet story about how the pair got together, and Kielty's incredible birthday surprise that 'knocked her socks off'.
"Since we did [TV show] Fame Academy and all that. We would always call each other on birthdays or Christmas, or we'd see each other occasionally or whatever it was," Deeley told then-Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy.
"Anyway, there was a night where it was the day before my birthday. I can't even remember what birthday it was now! It was 30-something. Anyway, he called me and he spoke to me on the phone. He said, 'Oh, what are you doing for your birthday? I'm just ringing to say happy birthday'.
"I said, 'Oh, we're going to the Beverly Hills Hotel. We're just going to have a late brunch; it's going to be very civilised. It's a shame you're not here, otherwise you could come'. And he was like, 'Well, eh - I'll be there'.
"Now, bear in mind at this point, Ryan, he was at the Maghera Inn down the end of the road," Deeley continued.
"And in Ireland I think it was approximately three o'clock in the morning, so I wasn't too sure! I was like, 'Yeah, yeah, sure you will. Sure you will, Charlie Big Bananas, sure you'll be there! I'll hold you a seat, how about that?
"Anyway, I didn't know this, but he basically stumbled home from the pub, set an alarm clock, booked a flight to go back to Heathrow - I think the first flight out. He set his alarm for five, first flight out was seven to land into Heathrow at eight to get on the 9:30 flight to fly to LA. "He flew to LA with his hand luggage, jumped in a cab, told the story to the cabbie. The cabbie was like, 'Are you sure you don't want me to wait? I can wait for you. I can wait. That'll be ok'. He's like, 'No, no! It's good, it's good!'
"[He] Walked into the Beverly Hills Hotel, dropped his bag at concierge and walked in. At which point I fell off my seat. And he then proceeded to be utterly charming to everybody around the table. Everybody slightly fell in love with him. As did I. And he didn't go home for 10 days."
Kielty is a self-confessed "born romantic" and ahead of hosting his first Late Late Show Valentine's special last year, the TV presenter opened up about 'following his heart' and flying to Los Angeles to surprise Deeley for lunch.
'I am an absolute born romantic… If I'd a quid for every rom-com I've cried at," he said at the time.
'I followed my heart all the way to Los Angeles to surprise my now wife for lunch. Twelve years and two kids later, I think it worked out.'
Kielty and Deeley went public with their relationship in May 2012 and the couple secretly tied the knot in September of that year with their close family and friends present.
They welcomed their eldest son Milo in January 2016, and their second son James Patrick in June 2018.

Galway woman named Best Dressed Lady at 2025 Galway Races

Ballybrit has been once again lit up with dazzling outfits as racegoers descended on town today for one of the most glamorous dates in the Irish social calendar: the crowning of Best Dressed Lady at the Galway Races. Now in its 156th year, the Galway Races Summer Festival is a highlight of the year for fans of the racing as well as fashion, with plenty to thrill onlookers - not least Ladies Day, which takes place on the Thursday of the races. One of the biggest days in the Irish Racing calendar, this event always delivers showstopping looks as attendees dress to the nines in an effort to land the coveted title and cash prize. This year also marks the first in a three-year partnership between the Galway Races and multi-award-winning Irish skincare brand Ella & Jo, a powerhouse brand led by two female co-founders that is known for championing real skin, real women, and real confidence. The judging panel for ladies day this year is led by trusted voices in Irish fashion and beauty, with Galway Races icon Mandy Maher returning as Head Judge for the fourth year running, joined for the first time by Niamh Ryan, co-founder of Ella & Jo and Lisa McGowan, founder of Lisa & Co and Lisa's Lust List Best Dressed Lady Taking home the coveted €10,000 prize for Best Dressed Lady was Megan Cunniss from Newcastle Co Galway, whose look embodied the Ella & Jo ethos - bold, original, and completely her own. "I just can't believe it I am ecstatic. I'm from Galway so this means so much to me." Cuniss, who is a regular at Ladies Days throughout the year, wowed in a striking monochrome ensemble, stepping out in a sleeveless white dress white contrasting black trim and black buttons. She paired this with a black and white clutch bag hired from Mála Hire, sheer black gloves and black and white stiletto heels. She topped off her look with an elegant white wide-brimmed hat with a black trim, created by Millinery By Mairéad. Best Hat The prize for Best Hat went to Bride Butler from Thurles Co Tipperary, who was awarded the €3,000 prize for a standout piece by Michelle Kearns. The judges applauded the design for its originality, craftsmanship, and sheer presence. The Judges The stylish judges were just as impressively dressed, leading the charge for the Ladies. Head Judge Mandy Maher stepped out in a chic and summery ensemble, wearing a white jumpsuit paired with a woven belt to cinch the waist, a shimmering pale gold long jacket and gold pointed toed heels. She finished her look with a sculptural gold headpiece that swirled elegantly around her head. Niamh Ryan also opted for summer whites, wearing a stunning white dress with voluminous off-the-shoulder sleeves and floral embroidery at the hem in shades of pale pink and beige. She paired this with a wide-brimmed straw hat and gold heels. Guest guest Lisa McGowan, meanwhile, went bold and turned heads in a scarlet gown with a slashed high neck and an A-line skirt. She paired this with a red clutch bag, nude heeled sandals and a feathered red headpiece. Speaking about the winning look, McGowan said: "Ladies Day holds such a special place in my heart. The standard this year was phenomenal, not just in terms of fashion, but in the presence behind the outfits. Our winner had that rare magic. She didn't just wear the look, she owned it."
