Reform is right to target Miliband's outrageously expensive wind subsidies

Telegraph19-07-2025
The green lobby is in uproar. Apparently investors may never trust the UK government ever again. Democracy itself is under threat.
So what has prompted this hysteria?
It is a letter sent this week by Richard Tice, the deputy leader of Reform UK, to the chief executives of major renewables developers to inform them that any new contracts they sign for subsidies may be cancelled by a future government.
Tice's intention is simple: to deter these companies and their investors from participating in the upcoming seventh auction for contracts for difference (CfD), which offer green energy generators a guaranteed minimum price for their power.
The timing of his letter coincides with a flurry of government announcements suggesting the next auction will impose billions in additional costs on energy bills.
The length of subsidies are to be extended from 15 to 20 years – likely in a bid to lower the headline cost levels – and various other amendments have been made that prioritise volume over value by incentivising maximum deployment, rather than lowest cost.
Tice is rightly worried about the cost impacts both on heavy industry, which is already struggling with the highest industrial electricity prices in the developed world, and households, more of which risk being pushed into fuel poverty.

Up to £10k off EVs as makers slash prices to beat new grant

Car makers from Hyundai to Volvo are offering up to £3750 off new electric cars as they wait for the arrival of the UK government's new Electric Car Grant (ECG). Announced earlier this month, the ECG has been introduced as a way of stimulating EV sales in the UK, following a period of stagnation since the previous government's Plug-in Car Grant (PiCG) was pulled in 2022. The new ECG, backed by £650 million of government funding, will yield a discount for qualifying cars of either £1500 or £3750, depending on their environmental impact. To qualify, car manufacturers themselves must meet science-backed emissions targets, while the individual model lines must start at below £37,000 in entry-level trim. Which discount a model receives is determined by how much CO2 is emitted in an EV's production, assessing the energy used in vehicle assembly as well as battery manufacturing. Threshold levels have yet to be made public. While any manufacturer can apply for their car to be included in the scheme, it's thought that, due to this criteria, cars produced in Asian countries, such as China, South Korea and Japan, will not be eligible for the ECG. This would include cars from Hyundai, MG and GMW – all three of which have already launched their own equivalent discounts, likely pre-empting that their cars will be denied access to the ECG. Below are the discounts already being offered by car makers as they await the results of the ECG applications. Alfa Romeo The Alfa Romeo Junior Elettrica – the Italian marque's first EV – can now be had with £1500 off its list price. This leaves the Polish-made compact crossover retailing for £32,405. GWM Chinese firm Great Wall Motor has launched a £3750 grant for the Ora 03 hatchback. The MG 4 EV rival, which was previously named the Funky Cat, now costs just £21,245. Hyundai Hyundai is matching the government's incoming ECG by offering a discount of £3750 on its new Inster hatchback, bringing it down in price to £19,755. The prices of all its other EVs – such as the Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6 and Kona Electric – have been slashed by £1500.

Heineken sells less beer after fraught pricing talks with retailers

Brewing giant Heineken has said it sold less beer in the face of tense price negotiations with European retailers over the first half of the year. The Dutch brewer saw shares dip as it also indicated that US tariffs would act as a drag on company profits. The company, which also makes Birra Moretti and Amstel, reported a 1.2% slump in beer volumes in the first six months of 2025, driven by declines in Brazil, the US and parts of Europe. It said European volumes dropped by 4.7% after a number of retailers, primarily in France, the Netherlands, Germany and Spain, pulled the brand due to planned price increases. Heineken said the talks with retailer groups took longer than expected to be resolved. Group revenues dropped by 5% to 16.9 billion euros (£14.6 billion) for the half-year. The company said it also saw weaker sales in the US over the period, with beer volumes down by 'high' single digits due to weak consumer sentiment. It comes as the company is set to be impacted by the proposed 15% tariff on all EU products imported into the US. In the UK, net revenues, before exceptional items and amortisation, increased by 'low single digits' over the half. Beers and cider volumes dropped, despite strong growth from its Cruzcampo lager brand. Its Murphy's stout brand also saw further growth after being boosted by improved distribution and new draughts. The brand benefited from supply issues from rival stout brand Guinness late last year following soaring demand. Dolf van den Brink, chief executive and chairman, said: 'We continued to invest in future-proofing our business, strengthening our footprint and brand portfolios, funded by productivity savings. 'Our volume performance improved across all regions in the second quarter and continued to be of high quality.'
