Sr Preethi Mary and Sr Vandana Francis, along with Sukaman Mandavi, were arrested by the Government Railway Police (GRP) at the Durg railway station on July 25 following a complaint by a local Bajrang Dal functionary, who accused them of forcibly converting three women from the state's tribal-dominated Narayanpur district and trafficking them.
According to the GRP, the group was allegedly preparing to travel to Agra where the three young women were to be trained and later employed. The nuns, booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 143 (trafficking) and Section 4 of the Chhattisgarh Freedom of Religion Act, 1968, (unlawful religious conversions), were remanded in judicial custody till August 8.
Kottayam MP Francis George told TNIE, 'The things that happened on Wednesday were quite unexpected. As soon as the bail application was moved, the Sessions judge said that the plea could not be heard since it didn't have the power to hear human trafficking cases.' The matter got complicated as Narayanpur and surrounding areas are Naxal-infested. 'Since human trafficking cases are prevalent in these areas, laws have been made in such a way that they come under the purview of NIA,' he said.

He was also sent to jail in connection with the case. Mr. Rakesh Singh had taken a "strict but duty-bound" decision to remove him from service, citing the severity of the charges. Mr. Ahmad challenged the dismissal in the High Court, where Mr. Anura Singh argued that the inquiry violated the Uttar Pradesh Police Subordinate Ranks (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1991. She contended that the inquiry officer had not only found the charges proved but also recommended punishment — a power reserved solely for the disciplinary authority. Justice Ajit Kumar agreed with the argument, quashed the inquiry report and the dismissal order, and directed Mr. Ahmad's reinstatement with a fresh inquiry to be completed within three months. "This was simply about doing our respective jobs," Mr. Anura said on Sunday (August 10, 2025), adding that the authority of the court stands above all personal equations. Mr. Rakesh Singh said he was proud his daughter upheld her professional role, while Mr. Ahmad expressed gratitude, saying he was unaware of the personal connection during the case.

Chhattisgarh builds 3,000 houses for families affected by Naxal violence
Raipur: The Chhattisgarh government has begun constructing nearly 3,000 homes under a special Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme for families affected by Naxal violence, including surrendered extremists who do not qualify under regular eligibility rules, said an officer overseeing the project. In Sukma, Sodi Hungi, whose husband was killed by Naxals in 2005 moved into her first permanent home in July, while in Kanker, Dashri Bai, widowed in a Maoist attack during state elections, finished building her house within three months, the officer said. The highest number of houses– 984– sanctioned under the scheme are being built in Sukma followed by 761 homes in Bijapur and 376 in Narayanpur among others. Chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai said the project reflects a wider push for 'trust, development and rehabilitation' in conflict-hit areas. 'This is not just about building houses, it's about restoring faith and stability,' he said. Deputy chief minister and home minister Vijay Sharma called the initiative a 'historic step towards justice and dignity' for communities long affected by violence, adding that success stories show that 'development can reach even the most remote corners' when backed by empathy and effective administration.
