Audiences will connect with honest work of art: Vipin on Angammal's NYIFF win
Vipin Radhakrishnan, director, and the team of Angammal are 'happy and excited' as the film, which stars actress Geetha Kailasam in the lead, won the Best Film prize at the New York Indian Film Festival (NYIFF) 2025.
'This award has motivated us, especially since Angammal is getting into its next stage — theatrical, and then, the OTT release. We think this will help the film reach a wider audience. We have conceived the film as an experimental commercial film. So, its win at the festival has made us confident that if we put out an honest work of art, the audience will connect with it,' says the filmmaker.
Vipin is particularly happy for all the support coming his way. He reveals, 'We had previously screened the film at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, and the International Film Festival of Kerala, among others. The audiences there are also calling in to congratulate us on this win. It is overwhelming to see their support.'
He reckons that the support coming his way would help market the film better; after all, 'Nowadays, no matter how good a film is, properly marketing it is key.'

‘Angammal', ‘Bad Girl' and other Tamil titles to shine at Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2025
The upcoming edition of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne is all set to feature a stellar line-up of Tamil titles, including feature films, documentaries and shorts. The line-up is led by Vipin Radhakrishnan's film Angammal, starring Geetha Kailasam, Saran, and Thendral Raghunathan. The stirring film, set in a remote 1990s Tamil Nadu village, examines the discomfort and chaos that arises when a son tries to 'modernise' his mother's traditional ways to avoid social embarrassment. What begins as a simple act spirals into a sharp commentary on shame, culture, and control. The film has been selected for Best Indie Film, Best Actress and Best Director. Then comes the Vetri Maaran-produced Bad Girl, which has already created ripples across Tamil Nadu. The coming-of-age feature directed by Varsha Bharath follows Ramya (Anjali Sivaraman) on a chaotic journey from adolescence to adulthood. Caught between overbearing parents, social expectations, unrequited crushes, and internal chaos, Ramya's story resonates with the realities of many young Indian women navigating identity, love, and mental health. The film has been nominated for Best Actress and Best Director. ALSO READ: Director Varsha Bharath on what it takes to be a 'Bad Girl' Filmmaker Vani Subramanian's documentary title, Cinema Pe Cinema, will also see its Australian premiere at the festival. A tribute to India's single-screen theatres and the communal movie-watching culture they nurtured, the film gently examines a fading cinematic heritage through memory, nostalgia, and resistance to erasure. Meanwhile, all the way from France comes actor-director Lawrence Valin's Tamil political drama, Little Jaffna, starring Valin, Vela Ramamoorthy and Radikaa Sarathkumar. 'The film follows Michael, a police officer tasked with infiltrating a Tamil separatist group in Paris. As he immerses himself in their world, he begins to empathise with the very people he was meant to expose, blurring the lines between duty, truth, and belonging,' reads a press release. The Tamil slate also includes the tender short film, Farewell, coming from the UK by Soham Kundu, starring Samir Mahat and Vishnu Krishnan. 'In a single day, two friends—one heartbroken, the other on the verge of marriage—confront grief, nostalgia, and their tangled past in a quiet yet emotionally resonant journey,' reads the logline. The 2025 edition of the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) will be held from August 14 to 24.

'Cruel irony': Hansal Mehta reacts to cancellation of MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2025
The MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2025 has been cancelled. The news was confirmed on the festival's official social media handle on Monday. The decision was taken to revamp the festival with a "dynamic vision" and a "new team" to ensure that it will return as a premier showcase for the best of independent, regional, and classic cinema from India and around the world, said festival director Dungarpur in a statement. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "We are working diligently to reschedule the festival and will announce the new dates for the 2026 edition as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding and support," he added. The move comes as a major hiccup for the festival that has had a fair run since it was founded in 1997. Reacting to the same, filmmaker , whose 'Aligarh' and 'The Buckingham Murders' were earlier premiered at the festival, voiced his discontent. "It's a cruel irony that Mumbai draped in the glitz of being India's financial and cinematic capital cannot keep alive a film festival of its own," the filmmaker wrote on social media. He went on to call out the "self-appointed gatekeepers of cinema" who left the festival for better stages and safer bets, further adding that only a few "passionate believers" took care of it. "And now that fragile flame has been snuffed out. No ceremony. No outrage. Just a slow, silent forgetting. What should have been a cultural cornerstone has been reduced to a footnote - another casualty of apathy dressed as progress," Mehta concluded. Many took to the comment section and echoed similar sentiments. Filmmaker Onir wrote, "Heartbreaking that the industry that produces the largest number of films ... failed to nurture this one space that celebrated cinema as a form of art ... Tired of too many ads? go ad free now beyond box office and stars ., what a loss for the city and a shame for us as an industry." Organised by the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI), the film festival has emerged as a hub for the world to discover emerging South Asian talent and contemporary cinema. Several leading Bollywood celebrities like Priyanka Chopra, Farhan Khan, , and , have been associated with the festival over the years.
