Thailand's Auto Production Down 6.9% In March

BusinessToday29-04-2025

Thailand's auto production continued to contract in March but at a slower pace due to higher output of electric vehicles (EV) for the domestic market, data from the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) showed on Tuesday.
Thai auto manufacturers produced 129,909 vehicles last month, down 6.09 percent from a year earlier and easing from a 13.62 percent decline in February, mainly owing to a major fall in trucks and fuel-powered passenger cars, according to the FTI.
For the first quarter of 2025, auto production slumped 14.88 percent over the previous year to 352,499 units, despite significant growth in plug-in hybrid and pure EVs, said FTI Automotive Industry Club spokesperson Surapong Paisitpattanapong.
Domestic auto sales dipped 0.54 percent year-on-year to 55,798 units in March as sales of pickup trucks dropped amid tightened lending practices among financial institutions, high household debt, and a slowing economy, Surapong told a news conference.
The Southeast Asian country's finished car exports plunged 14.91 percent from a year earlier to 80,914 units in March, attributed to model changes for certain passenger vehicles and stricter carbon emission regulations in some markets, Surapong said. Related

The bus allegedly lost control, collided with the road divider, then veered into the opposite lane and overturned into a ditch. Twenty-seven people perished, the majority of whom were foreign tourists, while several others sustained serious injuries. Three years prior, on Aug 13, 2007, a total of 20 passengers were killed and nine others critically injured after the express bus they were traveling in lost control and overturned at Kilometre 229 on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) near Bukit Gantang, Perak. Here is a chronology of some of the deadliest bus crashes in Malaysia since 2003. Thailand races against time to avoid crippling 36% US tariffs in digital trade talks

BANGKOK (The Nation Thailand/ANN): Thailand has assembled a technical negotiation team to engage with Washington over punitive tariffs, with just weeks remaining before a 36% levy threatens to devastate the kingdom's largest export market. The Thai government also confirmed yesterday that it has established a high-level technical team following the United States' acceptance of bilateral trade negotiations. Officials are working against a 8 July deadline to conclude talks before Washington imposes retaliatory tariffs that could severely impact Thailand's $35.4 billion trade surplus with America. A Ministry of Commerce source revealed that senior officials will engage directly with the US Trade Representative (USTR) and Department of Commerce via video conference, citing time constraints that prevented Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira from travelling to Washington. "With only one month remaining before the US's 90-day deadline, there were concerns about time constraints," the source said. "Therefore, negotiations will proceed via online systems, which is similar to negotiating Free Trade Agreements." The talks centre on Thailand's ambitious five-point proposal aimed at reducing its trade surplus with the US by 50% within five years whilst strengthening strategic partnerships between the two nations. Key negotiation points include: Thailand plans to dramatically increase imports of American energy products including crude oil, liquefied natural gas, and ethane, alongside aircraft components, military equipment, and agricultural commodities such as maize, soybeans, and beef. The kingdom has also committed to reducing import duties on 11,000 items by 14% under the Most Favoured Nation system, whilst eliminating non-tariff barriers that restrict American agricultural products including cherries, apples, wheat, and meat. Bangkok is particularly keen to address concerns over "Made in Thailand" product misrepresentation, where goods from third countries are trans-shipped through Thailand to the US market. Officials pledge stricter enforcement of rules of origin to protect Thai product integrity. The government is also promoting increased Thai private sector investment in America, particularly in energy projects such as LNG facilities in Alaska and large-scale agricultural ventures. Currently, Thai companies operate 70 investments across 20 US states, creating over 16,000 jobs with a combined value of $16 billion. Poj Aramwattananont, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, welcomed Washington's willingness to negotiate as "a positive signal," expressing confidence that Thailand's comprehensive proposal addresses all aspects of tariff reduction. However, time pressures are mounting. Poj warned that goods shipped from Thailand today might take over 30 days to reach American ports, potentially missing any tariff relief if negotiations drag on. The stakes are considerable for Thailand's export-dependent economy. In 2024, the United States remained Thailand's primary export destination, accounting for 18.3% of total shipments. Bilateral trade reached $74.5 billion, with Thailand exporting $55.0 billion whilst importing just $19.5 billion. The 36% retaliatory tariff places Thailand 20th among 185 global trading partners and ninth in Asia, behind nations including Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, Iraq, and Bangladesh. Both sides are now racing to conclude negotiations before the deadline, with Thailand's economic future hanging in the balance as it seeks to maintain access to its most lucrative overseas market. - The Nation Thailand/ANN

Billionaire Razon enters Philippines' booming online gambling platform

A photo taken on Sept 16, 2016, shows billionaire Enrique Razon, chairman of International Container Terminal Services Inc and Bloomberry Resorts Corporation, during an interview in Manila. -- PHOTO: BLOOMBERG MANILA (Bloomberg): Tycoon Enrique Razon's Bloomberry Resorts Corp. launched its online casino platform in the Philippines' booming internet gambling sector, taking aim at market leader DigiPlus Interactive Corp. Revenue from electronic games overtook those from large brick-and-mortar casinos for the first time in the Philippines last year, marking a shift in Asia's second-largest gambling hub, according to the nation's gaming agency. Bloomberry's gaming site is accepting bets of less than $1 for games such as slots, baccarat and roulette, as the company targets mass consumers. Razon, with a net worth of $11.3 billion according to Bloomberg's Billionaires Index, told stockholders in April that his online gaming foray would diversify the company's revenue streams. Bloomberry runs two integrated resorts in the metropolitan Manila region under the Solaire brand, and a casino in Jeju in South Korea. Bloomberry shares rallied as much as 18.8% on Monday, marking its largest intraday gain in more than six weeks and making it the top-performer among Philippine blue chip stocks. While the Southeast Asian nation's expanding online gaming market has room for another player like Bloomberry, the company will face tough competition from entrenched DigiPlus. "Competing with DigiPlus, an established player with 40 million registered users, presents notable challenges for Bloomberry,' said Toby Allan Arce, an analyst at Globalinks Securities & Stocks Inc. in Manila. DigiPlus attracted 40 million registered users in 2024, double its 2023 numbers, according to the company. It is already looking at other markets after securing a license in Brazil, where the company will offer sports betting. It is also setting up a Singapore unit to drive international growth. -- ©2025 Bloomberg L.P.
