I know exactly what Auston Trusty is going through at Celtic so write him off at your peril

The USA international has fallen down the pecking order at Parkhead
Kelvin Wilson knows exactly what Auston Trusty is going through at Celtic.

The ex-Nottingham Forest defender's debut season at Parkhead in 2011/12 was a tough ride. He blew hot and cold and by summer, many fans had already written him off.

Now, a strikingly similar tale is unfolding with USA international Trusty.

Big things were expected when the Hoops splashed out £6million to land the American centre-back from Sheffield United last year.
to Liam Scales after dropping down the pecking order.
Wilson admits adapting to the intense pressure and expectations in Glasgow can come as a shock to the system.
But after proving his own doubters wrong in his second campaign, Wilson's confident Trusty will do the same.
In an exclusive interview with Record Sport, he said: 'I think every player is different. Some get a little bit complacent and think it's going to be easy going up to Celtic.
'And it's not. You can't just win a game 1-0 because you're going to get hammered by the press and fans. You've got to win convincingly and play well week in, week out.

'I think for the lad, he's had his first season, he knows what it's about now. It's just getting into your mindset of what you need to do to be a Celtic player. It's a winning mentality. People don't understand when you say that. You learn how to win.
'You've got to be a winner. You win at all costs. You don't go up there expecting someone to win you the game.

'I think every player has to go, 'I'm going to win us the game today.' Whether that's you score a goal, whether that's you make a great tackle, whether you block one off the line, that's the mentality you have to have.
'I'm going to win us the game today. However I do it, I'm going to make sure. And that's the mentality I had in my second season.
'And as well, in my second season, what I always told myself when I used to go on the pitch was, I'm going to be the best player today on the pitch.

'And I think that's what brought the best out of me. I know everyone will have their own ways of preparing for games, but that's something that I told myself in that second season. Every game, right, I'm going to be the best on the pitch today.'
It didn't take a lip reader for fans to work out what Brendan Rodgers groaned on the touchline when Trusty was outmuscled for Dundee's third goal in a six-goal thriller at Dens Park in January.
Wilson said: 'I think it's more physical up in Scotland. Every game against Celtic is a cup final and teams want to prove a point.

"Teams want to impress, maybe get a move to Celtic or get a move to a bigger club.
'So, you're playing against that week in, week out. It's every single week that you need to turn up and deal with the pressures of being a Celtic player.
'And that's one of them that every team wants to beat you.'

While Trusty has struggled to get to grips with the rough and physical nature of Scottish football at times, the ex-Arsenal centre-back saved his best displays for the Champions League.
Trusty was colossal at the back in away clean sheets against Atalanta and Dinamo Zagreb, and he even helped keep Bayern Munich quiet at the Allianz Arena.

Wilson knows that feeling well. He was a key part of the Neil Lennon side that stunned Barcelona 2-1 at Parkhead and reached the Champions League last 16.
And he reckons it's often easier to raise your game against the world's best than in the Scottish Premiership.
He said: 'This sounds weird because people are going to say you play against a better opposition. I think in the Champions League, sometimes it's easier.

'You might be the underdog sometimes. You're playing against better players, so your game automatically lifts.
'I think when you go back to the SPFL, you probably get a little bit complacent sometimes. You expect that you're going to win.
'I think that's the case sometimes. That's the difference between a top player like Scott Brown and a player who doesn't really succeed at Celtic and moves on pretty quickly.

'I played with a few who didn't play at all when I was there at Celtic. It's having that winning mentality of week in, week out, turning up.'
Trusty's inconsistent form hasn't been helped by the fact that the rearguard was chopped and changed last season due to injuries.
Wilson insists it's crucial that Brendan Rodgers finds a settled back four and builds a spine of a team he can rely upon for Europe.

He said: 'I think that was one of the reasons for our success that season. When you build partnerships, the triangle between me, Efe and Fraser, I thought was really strong.
'We always believed in each other. The spine of your team is really important. We had Scott Brown. They've now got Cal.
'Cal was a young lad when I was there. We had Gary Hooper up top. I know at the moment, Adam Idah doesn't play every week. So I think that was a big thing for us.

'The spine of our team was really consistent and I think that was the bedrock to our success. And then players that came in were all capable of doing it.
'But I think the main thing was that the spine of the team was, it picked itself a lot of the time.'

Fraser Forster, dubbed La Gran Muralla by the Spanish press after his heroics against Lionel Messi, was often unbeatable in goal for Celtic.
The Hoops could hang their hat on the Great Wall digging them out of jail with some crucial match-winning saves.
Wilson believes Celts have another top-drawer goalie with Premier League-winning legend Kasper Schmeichel.

He added: 'Being a centre-half, it's the biggest thing. I've played with a lot of goalkeepers in my career, but Fraser was unbelievable.
'You'd think, 'Is he human?' Even in training, he was that good. I played with another keeper, Lee Camp, who again was brilliant.
'But you see what Fraser used to do off the pitch. He was always first into the training ground like an hour or two before everyone else in the gym with the fitness coach and then he was always last to leave.

'Fraser put it in and he deserved everything in his career that he's had. They've got Kasper Schmeichel there.
'I know Wes Morgan really well and he's played with him and he spoke highly of him. I think he's pretty similar.
'I know he's a little bit older now, but, the games that I've watched, it looks like he can still play that level.
'It's really important to have a vocal goalkeeper and a reliable one who can play week in, week out as well.'

Rangers transfer latest as Martin NEEDS a new striker, Gers close in on signing and Scotland star discussed as target

RANGERS are set to make it ELEVEN summer signings - with the arrival of their latest target from Spain. Nobel Mendy is expected to be confirmed as Russell Martin's latest recruit, but SunSport's David Friel has doubts over whether fans will get to see much of him over the coming months. 4 Russell Martin has been a busy man in the transfer market already Credit: Willie Vass 4 But will there be more to come? Credit: Willie Vass Our Sports Content Editor believes there MUST be more to come between now and the window closes - especially after Tuesday night's worrying injury to Cyriel Dessers. Hamza Igamane is also struggling with his fitness, so the Gers boss is seriously lacking attacking numbers. Elsewhere, he also discussed more potential exits from Ibrox, including Igamane who's been attracting interest from France. And could Martin make a move for one of Steve Clarke's Scotland stars? Here's what he has to say... Do Rangers need another striker after Cyriel Dessers' injury? It's a blow for Rangers because right now Dessers is the number one striker. Whether that was going to be the case come the end of the window, who knows, but it looks as if he is going to be missing for a certain period of time. We don't know how long yet, but that striker hunt that Rangers were on has to be cranked up right now. Hamza Igamane is also a concern and probably an issue that has to be ironed out. He's played 15 minutes of competitive football, he picked up an injury. Rangers players look terrified and exposed under Russell Martin I think we all feel that it was probably heading towards a conclusion where Igamane leaves the club. It's gone a bit quiet but he clearly has interest, especially from France. Martin needs to know whether he's staying or where he's going. He has to plan with him or without him. I actually think Danilo did well when he came on against Viktoria Plzen up to a point. I thought his hold up play was better than Dessers', but I thought Dessers was really poor when he was on. Danilo showed a bit more energy, a bit more get up and go what Rangers did need. Is he gonna be the man to lead the line? Is he going to be the man to score 30 goals this season? I have my doubts. I would imagine the Rangers recruitment team and Russell Martin are now looking through strikers that have been compelling and saying right, who can we push a button on there? Nobel Mendy is a "project signing" 4 Nobel Mendy of Real Betis is set to join the Gers Credit: Getty You've also got Manny Fernandez as well who hasn't had a sniff so far and looking at this one, it just looks like a project signing. Rangers have got guys who are in for here and are match ready, then they've signed like Fernandez and Nobel Mendy. You would imagine these are projects signings for the future. I'd be very, very wary of expecting too much too soon. He's clearly got a good pedigree. I think he'll be more than suited to the physicality of Scottish football. However, he doesn't have a lot of experience. He would be coming in I'd imagine with a view to being bloodied in at certain times, and one for the future, but I would be very wary. It's interesting how Rangers chased Conor Cody for so long and, and now are signing a player who can play left centre half and left back with little experience. If his debut is going to be against Saint Mirren, never mind Celtic, that's still a bit of a baptism of fire. If he is signed and is thrown in then of course I would just wonder about Manny Fernandez. I would imagine he plays against Alloa at the weekend, and I think most Rangers fans want to see him, just to see what he can do. Andy Irving 4 Andy Irving playing for West Ham Credit: Getty It's one where he ticks a lot of boxes for both clubs up here (Rangers and Celtic), who would be the market for him, because he's Scottish, so it's one for the homegrown quota. He's got a good experience, a good name down at West Ham by all accounts. He played a bit for West Ham and he played for Scotland. I know Celtic certainly had an interest in him last summer. I think they were kind of aware that he might be available, but never really followed it through. I think for Rangers it would probably depend on whether someone leaves. I just look at the numbers in there just now and wonder, is it a priority area for Rangers to go and strengthen? I'm not so sure that it would be. I don't imagine it's an area that Russell Martin needs, unless an Nico Raskin or a Diomande leaves. Will Hamza Igamane and Ridvan Yilmaz leave? I would think there's more of a chance for Igamane now purely because of the injury. I think for Yilmaz, it looks like he's just out of favor. When Ross McCausland knew it was time to leave Rangers and why he's been blown away by his REPLACEMENTS He lost his squad jersey. He's not played and he'll have been watching that game last night looking at Jefte and thinking, how can I not get in that team? However, I think Rangers have just made a decision on him. He's gonna probably go back to Turkey, you would imagine Besiktas. Left-back is the priority I think left back is a priority for Rangers. I don't think the Max Aarons experiment worked. I like Jefe to a point, but he's got games like last night (against Viktoria Plzen) in him. He's got lapses in him, and I just wonder whether he fits the way Russell Martin really wants to play. I think he's far better just as a traditional fullback. I think, coming in the pitch that Russell Martin wants his fullbacks to do, I'm not sure if he's the man to do that. I think Yilmaz will go and another left back is an absolute necessity for Rangers. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Hearts 'good enough' to challenge for title, says Girasoli

After "exceeding expectations" in the "big" games last season, young Hearts defender Carly Girasoli believes her side can pose a real threat for the SWPL title.A promising campaign ended in disappointment for Girasoli as she ruptured her ACL in September in the 4-0 victory over city rivals signing a two-year contract extension this summer, Girasoli has high expectations heading into the new campaign with Hearts, who twice beat Hibs and Celtic last season on their way to a fifth-place finish."Over the last few years the club has progressed massively and the style of football is great to play," Girasoli, 23, said. "I think it's a really exciting time to be a part of this club."It's about knowing what we have in the dressing room, it's a really special group and now we want to be up there competing and we will."I think we exceeded expectations in the big games and surprised a lot of people. But we need to take care of every game because you see how tight it is at the end, sometimes even coming down to goal difference."So it's just about keeping those standards all throughout the season."The former Glasgow City player added: "I think there's a really good balance of young players and experience, it's a really good group."The manager [Eva Olid] drives the standards but that's all throughout the team. She's great to play under and I think you can see everything we've been working on coming together, so it's very exciting."We want to have a successful season as a team and we know were good enough to be up there challenging."With the development of women's football over the past few years, the vast majority of the Hearts squad, including Girasoli, are full-time. Something the former London City player feels has allowed for the marked improvement."I think it's such a professional environment," she added. "It's one of the reasons I moved here, I think the facilities we have are some of the best if not the best in the league and that allows us as players to strive to get better every day."

Steven Naismith returns to Scotland set-up as Steve Clarke's number two

The 38-year-old was previously first-team coach for the national team before being appointed Jambos boss in 2023. Naismith – out of football since being sacked by Hearts last September – has now been summoned back to the Scotland fold to become assistant coach after John Carver left to become manager of Lechia Gdansk. Clarke has also recruited Leicester set-piece coach Andrew Hughes to his backroom staff as a replacement for Austin MacPhee, who left the role last autumn. Steve Clarke has reinforced his backroom team ahead of our FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers ➕ Steven Naismith will return as assistant coach to replace John Carver and will be joined by Andrew Hughes, Leicester City's set-piece coach, who will perform the same role for Scotland. — Scotland National Team (@ScotlandNT) August 13, 2025 Both coaches will be in place for Scotland's World Cup qualifiers away to Denmark and Belarus next month. 'I am delighted to have Steven and Andrew with us for the World Cup qualifying campaign,' Clarke told the Scottish Football Association. 'Steven has been with us before and brings a real complementary skill set to myself and (first-team coach) Alan Irvine. 'He has had opportunities to return to full-time club football, so it says a lot for his pride in the national team that he has agreed to join up with us again. I was really impressed by a number of potential candidates we'd spoken to when John left to continue at Lechia Gdansk but the fact we've worked together before makes for a seamless transition. 'I am also really pleased to have Andrew with us. He has coached in a variety of roles since retiring from playing but has excelled as set-piece coach at Norwich City and now Leicester City and I am grateful to Marti Cifuentes for allowing Andrew to work with us during the international windows.' Naismith, who won 51 Scotland caps, has turned down other offers since leaving Hearts but is 'really excited' to be rejoining Clarke's staff. 'When I left Hearts, I made a point of not jumping straight back in at the first offer but to reflect on my coaching experiences and wait for something that really excited me,' the former Everton, Rangers and Norwich player said. 'When I first spoke to Steve about the possibility of coming back it was a no-brainer: I loved playing for my country, I've loved being part of the coaching team previously and I can't wait to help support the mission to take Scotland to a World Cup again.' Former Reading, Norwich and Leeds player Hughes, 47, said: 'From the moment I got the call from Steve I have felt extremely honoured to be invited to work with the Scotland men's national team. 'My father is Scottish and as well as this being a proud moment for me and my family, it is a hugely exciting time as a coach to be part of a World Cup qualifying campaign, with such a talented squad, following back-to-back Euro qualifications. I can't wait to get started.'
