Ewan McGregor's bid to fix roof on £2 million Scottish mansion refused

Yahoo10-07-2025
Ewan McGregor's bid to fix the roof on his £2 million Scottish mansion has been refused by the council.
The Hollywood actor, 54, applied to replace the roof of his retreat in Scotland, after architects said it was 'beyond repair'.
In the application submitted to Perth and Kinross Council, the Trainspotting star's representatives asked to replace the lead roof with a single-ply membrane Sarnafil one.
Architects said this was because 'patch repairs are no longer viable' on the current material and the valuable lead was at risk of theft.
'The existing lead roof is beyond repair, suffering from fatigue cracking, splits, and failed flashings,' the application submitted by David Bell Architects reads.
'Patch repairs are no longer viable and have led to water ingress, threatening the historic fabric below.
'Lead theft may also be a recurring issue, particularly on remote or vulnerable buildings such as this, making replacement with like-for-like materials unsustainable from a security perspective.'
But the council has denied the application, saying it would not 'preserve the fine detail character and special architectural interest' of the building.
The judgement read: 'Approval would be contrary to the Perth and Kinross Local Development Plan 2 Policy 27A, which favours retention and sympathetic restoration, as the proposed replacement roof structure, single ply membrane and PVC battens, and lantern rooflight features would adversely affect the listed building's character and special architectural interest, by virtue of reprofiling the roof, the use of non-traditional methods and materials.'
Mr McGregor bought the grade C-listed building near where he was born in 2023, according to reports.
The ten-bedroom villa was built in 1789 with 15,000 square foot of living space over three floors, according to the estate agent that sold it.
It also features a billiard room and a wine cellar amid its 18 acres of land and gardens.
Mr McGregor had previously been granted permission to build a replacement garage and a new master bedroom and bathroom.
He had also been given the green light to repair 'yellowing' and 'water damage' to the home.
He opened up about his move back to Scotland in an interview last year with Architectural Digest. He said: 'I definitely started to feel this pull home. I never saw it coming, it's weird.
'I think whoever made the world started with Scotland and got it right.'
The Star Wars actor is currently on the London stage for the first time in 17 years, starring in My Master Builder.

Lucasfilm Shuts Down Rumors of Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan Return in AHSOKA Season 2 — GeekTyrant

Star Wars fandom was thrown into chaos over the weekend after a misheard comment from Ewan McGregor sparked wild speculation that he'd be returning as Obi-Wan Kenobi in Season 2 of Ahsoka . Unfortunately for hopeful fans, Lucasfilm has now confirmed, it's not happening. The confusion began during McGregor's appearance at Fan Expo Boston 2025, when he was asked which Star Wars project he's not in but still enjoys. He pointed to Ahsoka , partly because his wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, plays Hera Syndulla in the Disney+ series. "Well, I like watching my wife, you know, so I really enjoyed Ahsoka. I thought that was brilliantly done. It's so funny, like, you know, she's shooting the second season now, and I know. Is that a secret?' That last line sent social media into hyperspace. Some fans seemed to assume he was hinting at his own appearance in the upcoming season. The rumor spread so fast that several outlets ran with it, until Lucasfilm stepped in to set the record straight. Once the audience confirmed Ahsoka 's production wasn't a secret, he went on to share a funny peek into his home life while Winstead is filming. "Well, she is anyway. And so I just finished doing a play. So I'm at home with our son, who's four, and I take him to school and everything. And then I'm, you know, bumbling around the house, and I'd fetch a FaceTime. 'I forget that she's going to be green, you know. She pops up, and I'm like, 'Oh my God, oh yes.' You know, often she's in her trailer without all the head stuff on, but she's just green, you know. She's a very beautiful green lady, so. I love that." It's not the update Star Wars fans were hoping for, but McGregor's Jedi master won't be crossing paths with Ahsoka Tano anytime soon. While Obi-Wan Kenobi had his own Disney+ series in 2022, a second season has yet to be greenlit, despite the actor's enthusiasm for a return. As for what's next in the galaxy far, far away, The Mandalorian & Grogu movie is locked in for a May 22, 2026 release. Until then, the wait for another Obi-Wan adventure continues.

The DHS Wants You to Forget That Anakin Skywalker Also Descended Into Fascism

Darth Vader is the villain in Star Wars. That's not up for debate. Sure, over the course of three movies he is ultimately redeemed. And yes, through later movies and TV shows, those choices are somewhat humanized. But none of that can change that Vader violently murdered many, many people and then became the right-hand man of a genocidal maniac intent on bending the galaxy to his will. Earlier this year, a leading Border Patrol agent posted a video from the end of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, depicting his team as Vader, slicing up helpless Rebels each named as a perceived problem: 'Fake News,' 'Fentanyl,' 'Gang Member,' etc. The implication is the Border Patrol, like Vader, is a hero, saving the U.S. from all these problems. The actual problem, however, is Darth Vader isn't a hero. He is, in fact, killing the characters who are fighting against evil and tyranny. That was released in May of this year and, this week, was featured in a segment on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver about 'Immigration Enforcement.' Oliver joked about the video, saying, 'OK, if I may quote an insufferable man on a first Bumble date, 'Have you ever seen Star Wars?' Because that's pretty famously the bad guy. Imagine how morally bankrupt you have to be to watch the most famous villain in cinematic history murdering a bunch of people, some of whom are literally begging for help, and think 'He is so us!'' But that's not the wild part. The wild part is Oliver's show reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment on the video and actually got a response. 'Not to spoil the plot, but as any Star Wars fans knows, Darth Vader is also Anakin Skywalker,' the DHS statement read. 'I don't think DHS has to regale the American public on the heroism of Skywalker, they know.' You can watch Oliver deliver this news at 18:33 below. Outside of the wild stretch of assuming the American public understands that Darth Vader is Anakin Skywalker and that Skywalker is a hero, there is a lot to unpack here. First of all, I would love to have them 'regale the American public on the heroism of Skywalker.' Was it when he killed a bunch of kids? Force choked his wife? Cut off a man's head with two lightsabers? Or are they actually, somehow, referring to his heroic exploits during The Clone Wars animated series? In that show, yes, Anakin was a hero, but it doesn't change what happened next. You know, the subjugation of the entire galaxy through terror and violence. Also, we'd venture to guess most people who aren't Star Wars fans don't know about any of that. Also, on an even nerdier note, is 'they know' an Empire Strikes Back reference? It sure feels like it. Also, why is 'spoiling the plot' something they're worried about? Maybe be less worried about spoiling the plots of the most famous movies of all time and more worried about being just and human to American immigrants? The U.S. government has a long history of not really understanding Star Wars going back to Ronald Reagan's use of the term in his defense platform. But this instance has to be one of the oddest and funniest. Want more io9 news? Firefighters battle large gorse fire at Scottish tourist attraction

Firefighters battled overnight to tackle a large gorse fire that spread across a landmark hill in Edinburgh. Emergency services were alerted to the blaze at Arthur's Seat late Sunday afternoon. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said early Monday two fire appliances remained at the scene and crews were helping dampen down hotspots. There have been no reports of any casualties. Plumes of black smoke could be seen billowing into the sky from the extinct volcano in Holyrood Park as the fire burned. 'Operations Control mobilized four fire appliances and specialist resources to a fire affecting a large area of gorse," an SFRS spokesperson said. The cause of the blaze is currently unclear. Arthur's Seat is a popular tourist attraction in the Scottish capital. From the hill's peak, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the old city and the surrounding area, including the sea to the east. The fire came as the city kicked off its annual Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the world's largest performance arts festival. Oasis fans also descended on the city over the weekend as the band performed two shows at Murrayfield Stadium. It will return to the stage for a third show on Tuesday.
