Staff insisted they could not travel
Joe and Beccy Barnes had booked a last-minute honeymoon to Ayia Napa, Cyprus, after tying the knot on Saturday August 2nd.
The pair, who have been together for five years, had collected all the money given to them as wedding presents to pay for a five-day, all-inclusive TUI package holiday.
However, when the couple arrived at East Midlands Airport on Wednesday [August 6th], they were shocked when TUI check-in staff discovered a 1cm rip on the upper right-hand corner of Joe's photo page in his passport.
TUI said the passport was 'very badly damaged', including suspected water damage, a small tear in the photo page, as well as the cover being ripped and repaired with tape.
The 35-year-old forklift driver said he'd flown with Jet2 on his stag do three weeks before with no issues, but said TUI staff insisted he could not travel.
The dad-of-two and his new wife remained in the airport for two hours trying to come up with a solution before heading home.
'The decision was pathetic'
Joe and Beccy, a 38-year-old civil servant, were 'devastated' after losing out on their £1,200 honeymoon, describing TUI's decision to bar them from the flight as 'pathetic'.
Joe, who lives near Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, said: "The wedding was the best day of my life.
"We just wanted to get away and chill out for a bit so used the cash from all the guests to book the honeymoon.
"We got to the front check-in desk and the woman said you've got a slight rip in your passport page. I need to go talk to my manager.
"She said 'yeah there's a rip in it'. I'd actually flown with Jet2 three weeks before for my stag do and that was absolutely fine.
"I didn't know about the rip until then. There was no compassion at all.
"I told them it was my honeymoon. But TUI headquarters got back to say 'do not let this man travel'.
"I thought this can't be happening. It was horrible. We sat around the airport for a good two hours trying to think of solutions.
"We thought we could catch a flight with a different airline, but Jet2 said they wouldn't let us fly either."
Fundraising for another honeymoon
The couple were left 'devastated' after returning home from the airport, and said they've complained to TUI about the 'pathetic' decision to ban them from flying.
Joe said: "I just couldn't believe it. Me and my Mrs were mortified. I felt like crying my eyes out.
"We'd had an amazing weekend with the wedding and everything just went downhill.
"My wife was absolutely devastated. It was a horrible feeling. I wouldn't want my worst enemy to go through this.
"I think it's pathetic I got denied boarding for that tiny rip. I could understand it if it was a massive rip over my photo or my personal details and you couldn't read them.
"It's looking doubtful that insurance will cover it. It's quite unlikely. We're just going to try and book something later on
."The worst bit is that it's other people's money. I would warn people to get their passport checked, even if there's a slight mark on it."
A spokeswoman for TUI confirmed that Mr Barnes was refused travel by check-in staff at East Midlands Airport due to his passport being 'very badly damaged', including suspected water damage, a small tear in the photo page, as well as the cover being ripped and repaired with tape.
The holiday giant said that staff recommended that Mr Barnes liaised directly with his insurance provider regarding compensation and to contact the passport office to get a replacement.
The Sun has approached TUI and Jet2 for a comment.

'I'm a travel agent who's planned 6,000 holidays - there's one essential I always pack'

Claire Le Moigne has spent 35 years as a TUI retail manager and has now shared the top packing hacks she's learnt from over three decades working in the travel industry. Whilst she's worked in stores in Leeds, Wakefield and Selby, she's also travelled across the globe to more than 20 destinations. She's booked well over 6,000 holidays for her customers and is still booking trips for the same families she did 35 years ago. It comes following news that Spanish islands fear Brits won't return as tourists are dealt another blow. Claire said: 'Over the years I've been on my fair share of trips, but I've also helped all of my customers prepare for their summer holidays. I've picked up lots of tips and tricks along the way when it comes to the essentials we should take away, but I've also seen firsthand some of the biggest mistakes that travellers make with their luggage.' Her absolute must-have when heading away is something that many households will already own, but may not think to take with them on holiday. 'I never travel without a foldable tote bag when I go on holiday. They pack away super small, but they're so handy for any items I accumulate over the day – whether that's souvenirs or even dirty clothes from the kids! Whether I need some extra room whilst trekking around a city or want a beach bag on a fly and flop break, it always comes in handy," Claire explained. From avoiding overweight cases and forgotten chargers, to preparing for mid-trip Marmite cravings, here are Claire's tried and tested summer holiday packing tips which have helped her customers get from check-in to sun lounger hassle free. Keep the clothes light 'Avoid the trap that 88% of Brits fall into and don't pack clothes that you won't wear. Before you pop clothes in a suitcase plan out which items you can use for which outfit and try them on – take a quick picture and then you'll be able to remember exactly what options you have. "I tend to do this a couple of weeks before I pack, ensuring I've got myself covered for evening outfit changes too. I make sure to leave plenty of room for shoe options. It's also a good idea to pack outfits that can be mixed and matched. For example, three different tops that go with two different pairs of shorts. I always weigh my bags ahead of time too and add on any extra luggage before I travel if I needed.' Take your creature comforts 'Brits are known for bringing teddies, slippers and even ketchup on holiday – so lean into it. If bringing a few items as part of a comfort kit will help ease homesickness for you or your family, then why not make room for the jar of Marmite! I can never leave for my holidays without a stash of my favourite teabags. They don't take up lots of space or weight, so why not chuck them in!' Ditch folding for rolling, bundling or filing 'Nobody wants to spend their time ironing on holiday. I always opt to roll my clothes to help avoid creases and to save space. If you need that extra bit of compression you can try the 'bundle method' where you wrap larger items around smaller ones. That said, if you're someone who doesn't like to unpack their suitcase when you get to your destination, filing your clothes vertically lets you see everything in your case at a glance – you just might need to take more advantage of a travel iron!' Sticky notes are your best friend 'Every holiday, the average Brit forgets two essential items. They're usually things like travel adaptors, chargers or toothbrushes. So, before you zip up your bag, physically check off your essentials: phone, passport, charger, swimming costume, and, yes, underwear! A sticky note checklist on your front door works wonders to jog your memory. The week before I travel, I write a list of things I need to buy, the essentials like suncream and insect repellent. It keeps me super relaxed on the way to the airport knowing everything is already in my case.' Don't leave things hanging 'The worst packing mistake I've ever heard was by a lady who packed for her partner and left their clothes hanging up at home ready to go in the case! At the end of the day, the clothes are all going in the suitcase, so sitting in there for an extra few days won't hurt. Better that than being left with nothing to wear.' Downsize your toiletries 'Most destinations sell shampoo and bodywash, so there's no need to pack the whole bathroom cupboard. Instead, swap out bulky bottles for travel-size refills or reusable containers. Make-up wipes and solid toiletries like shampoo bars can also save space and prevent leaks. If in doubt, it's worth wrapping up a bottle in a plastic bag to prevent any spillages in transit.' In-flight essentials 'It's a given that eye masks, earplugs and noise-cancelling headphones are essential for comfort on a plane, but one thing a lot of people forget to bring is a reusable water bottle. You can refill it after security, and cabin crew are often able to top you up during long flights too – this is a great money saving hack so you don't end up spending extra pounds on disposable bottles for the whole family. "It's also really important to stay hydrated during a flight – the air can get quite dehydrating. That's also why I like to bring a little facemask for a long flight. An hour or so before landing I'll pop it on to properly wake me up after any naps and I always feel so much more refreshed.'

During her long career, the travel agent has picked up countless helpful tips, and swears by her simple sticky note hack. Sticky note hack Ever got to your hotel and realised you've forgotten your travel adaptor, toothbrush or favourite bikini? In the mad rush to get everything packed, it is incredibly common for people to forget to pack essentials. To prevent this, Claire recommends writing a checklist on a sticky note, and placing it on your door, to help jog your memory whilst you're packing. 'The week before I travel, I write a list of things I need to buy; the essentials like sun cream and insect repellent", she told National World. "It keeps me super relaxed on the way to the airport knowing everything is already in my case.' The travel whizz added that before you zip up your case, you should read through everything on your sticky note, and physically check it off. Write a list Think about all the essentials you need to take with you; suncream, medicine, a few games for the kids, beach towels, and write everything in one list, which you can tick off as you add it to your suitcase. Or for complete ease, try Google's AI app - Gemini - which will create a list for you and help you not over pack. 2. Involve your kids Jemma said: 'My girls are getting older, they're 11 and nine, and they enjoy helping to pack. So I send them a list, and say 'this is what you need' and they follow the list. 'And then I give them a rucksack each - and say to them 'you can have whatever you want in there as long as it's not liquid', and they can take that on the plane. And that's their 'home away from home' items.' 3. Try a hack or two She said: "I think they all work, but for different reasons - and you've just got to pick the right one for your trip. "Rolling your clothes is really good to stop your clothes from getting creases. And if you're trying to get a lot of items into your case, it's a space saver. 'Packing cubes are great - for example, I'm going on holiday with my three kids and we're all using the same suitcase for our clothes. "These handy compartments let you separate your clothes, toiletries and tech into designated cubes, maximising luggage space by keeping your items compressed and neatly stacked. "I love taking them abroad with the family and it means my kids can easily take charge of their own items once we've arrived." 4. Decant beauty products Do you really need to take full-size bottles of shampoo and conditioner with you? The beauty industry has evolved so much, you can now buy shampoo bars or sheets - which are much lighter and smaller. Or, if you'll be popping to the shops when you're abroad, consider buying some items when you arrive. 5. Get organised before you come home Jemma said: 'When you repack on holiday [before coming home], the trick is to separate clean from dirty clothes. 'Also pack it in some form of order - so lights, darks, colours for items that need washing, or if you wash your clothes by person in the household, piles for each person. "Then you can put it straight into the washing machine. Do it straight away, don't leave it." Instead, the travel agent shared that she likes to roll up her clothes, which leaves them crease free, and is also a great space saver. "If you need that extra bit of compression you can try the 'bundle method' where you wrap larger items around smaller ones", she advised. Downsize toileteries Many people take the whole bathroom cabinet with them when packing for holidays, but most hotels have shampoo and shower gel in the rooms. If you can't bear to part with your favourite shampoo, it's a good idea to get some tiny reusable bottles to decant a week's worth in to, to help you save space. "Make-up wipes and solid toiletries like shampoo bars can also save space and prevent leaks", she added. "If in doubt, it's worth wrapping up a bottle in a plastic bag to prevent any spillages in transit.'
